What Does The Assessment Involve
Each assessment is tailored to the individuals presentation and need, but there will be a client interview and assessment done individually or with a significant other. The assessment tool and structure employed is selected based on what would best assess the client.

What Happens Next?
The clinician will write a detailed report which will tell you if you have been diagnosed with Autism Spectrum Disorder .
You will be offered a follow up appointment with the clinician to give you feedback, go through the report, discuss the diagnosis and its implications, talk about the support you may need and any concerns you may have.
It is recommended that you bring a family member with you to support you and to help explain the feedback.

How Is Adhd Tested And Diagnosed
Attention-deficit hyperactivity disorder can’t be diagnosed with a physical test, like a blood test or an X-ray. Instead, a health professional uses an evaluation process to diagnose ADHD.
During the evaluation, a professional gathers information about you or your child to determine if the criteria for ADHD are met. The criteria come from the Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders , the official diagnostic guide used in the United States.

Early Adhd Signs Checklist For Toddlers
Many children with symptoms of ADHD can be diagnosed as young as age 4. For younger children like 2-3 years old toddlers, it may be hard to know whether they would meet these criteria. Sometimes, a development problem may lead to a wrong diagnosis of ADHD. For these young age children, an accurate diagnosis is best made by a pediatrician or child psychiatrist specializing in behavior and development.

Only a mental-health professional can tell for sure whether symptoms of distractibility, impulsivity, and hyperactivity are severe and persistent enough to suggest a positive diagnosis of attention deficit hyperactivity disorder. The economic impact of applying this method to a disorder that afflicts perhaps five percent of schoolchildren is well worth contemplating. Indeed, diagnostic complexity and time constraints were among the reasons cited by general practitioners for their low level of interest in ADHD management.16 The American Academy of Pediatrics suggests a less ambitious, but more realistic approach: Rating scales from parents and teachers, exclusion of alternative diagnoses, and developmental testing, if necessary. Family practitioners are advised to use rating scales, to review the childs school progress, to screen for vision or hearing impairment and comorbid psychiatric conditions, and to use objective measures of cognitive function.17 Child psychiatrists are urged to interview the child and to utilize direct observations .18

Technical Approaches Of Limited Utility
The foregoing discussion does not, by any means, exhaust the wide range of medical and psychological tests that have been brought to bear on the problem of ADHD. Actigraphs are motion sensors that the patient wears like a wristwatch.7476 They seem to be reliable indicators of a childs level of activity, but the results do not correlate with other measures and they are not diagnostic instruments.77,78 They are of limited clinical utility, since hyperactivity per se is not typically the source of the most significant impairment.79 Usually, the important variable is not the total amount of activity, but its situational appropriateness.18
Polysomnography, evoked potentials, quantitative EEG, and functional brain imaging are used in research settings and even in some specialized ADHD clinics, but have no clearly defined clinical utility.8083
The proper diagnosis of ADHD has been problematic for a long time. During the 1960s, when the condition was known as the hyperkinetic syndrome, research psychologists recommended direct observations of the child in the classroom. A psychologist would sit in the back row of the childs class, trying to be unobtrusive, and actually count instances of out of seat behavior or blurting out answers during a set period of time.

If possible, bring copies of any appropriate records such as medical, psychological, school/employment records to the appointment. Be prepared to give a detailed social and family history.
Many healthcare providers will send you a questionnaire to complete the appointment. Be sure to bring the completed forms with you to the appointment.
They may also send the questionnaire to other people with your consent, such as your child’s teacher or daycare provider.

A Good Starting Point
This screening test is a symptoms checklist for adult ADHD and not a diagnostic test. A full assessment and potential diagnosis of ADHD is not accomplished using an online test or during a quick doctors appointment. A thorough evaluation usually takes more than one visit, and must be done by a professional who is trained in ADHD*. Other conditions can sometimes resemble ADHD, so it is important to work with a professional who is able to rule out these other conditions and make the appropriate diagnosis. Many psychologists, psychiatrists, therapists and some general practice physicians are trained to diagnose adult ADHD.
A thorough assessment requires a complete physical and psychiatric medical history as well as screening to rule out any possible physical disorders. All assessments should include an extensive interview with you and often with your significant other , and the application of various symptom-rating scales. For accuracy, it is common to use more than one scale to confirm results.

There are several different professionals who are qualified to diagnose ADHD. A psychiatrist, psychologist, psychotherapist, neurologist, and some physicians can diagnose ADHD. Before booking an appointment, ask specifically if the care provider has experience diagnosing ADHD.
If you’re interested in being assessed for ADHD, you might start by talking to your doctor. Your family doctor might not carry out the detailed evaluation but can give you a referral to a professional who can adequately assess you.
Some pediatricians and general practitioners do diagnose ADHD. If your physician suspects you or your child has ADHD, you might ask for a referral to a specialist to conduct further assessment.
