What Methodology Is Used To Collect Data
A number of surveillance methods to estimate the prevalence of ASD were considered, most notably: record-review survey data and administrative data collection methods. Each of these methods uses a different approach to identify information.
A record-review method involves access to all available documents from health and/or education sources to identify children with ASD and/or ASD behaviours. The records are reviewed by trained professionals to classify cases. The survey data collection method involves the direct collection of data through standardized tools that are primarily administered with telephone or electronic questionnaires. The third method involves accessing details from administrative databasesNote i that have been designed by government agencies and other organizations to document the provision of health, education and/or social services. These data are then analyzed for surveillance purposes.
The use of an administrative data methodology is a more cost effective approach than either a record review or survey method. Administrative data have been previously and successfully used to describe ASD in Canada, in the National Epidemiological Database for the Study of Autism in Canada .Note ii

Chapter : Autism Marriage Statistics
- Around half of all adults with diagnosed autism reside with a member of their family.
- Old research shows that about 5% of autistic adults are married or have been married in the past.

Why Are Boys More Likely To Have Autism
There has been something unusual and inexplicable about autism from the very beginning. When psychiatrist Leo Kanner was conducting some of the first studies that led to a formal diagnosis for the syndrome, he noticed something strange about his test subjects: there were more than four times as many boys that showed symptoms as girls.
Kanners initial observation has been confirmed repeatedly in autism spectrum disorder research over the years. Between four and five times as many boys as girls are diagnosed with ASD each year, and the same has been true for as far back as there are records. What Percentage Of Babies Are Autistic
I mentioned above that the CDC reports that 1.7% of the population has autism.
For babies, however, its much harder to know if the rates of autism at birth are any different. The reason for that is that autism often isnt diagnosed until kids are around age 7.
What we do know is that tracking of autism in minority populations has improved dramatically in recent years. Stuart K. Shapira, MD, PhD of the CDC went on to say that Autism prevalence among black and Hispanic children is approaching that of white children.
No doubt that accounts for the increase from 1.5% in 2016.
While 1.5% to 1.7% may sound small, bear in mind thats across the total population in the United States. That means out of the 327.2 million people in the US, 5.5 million people have autism.
That increase from 1.5% to 1.7% means an additional 600,000 people have been diagnosed with autism just between 2016 and 2018.

They may want to travel the same way to and from school or work, wear the same clothes or eat exactly the same food for breakfast.
Autistic people may also repeat movements such as hand flapping, rocking or the repetitive use of an object such as twirling a pen or opening and closing a door. Autistic people often engage in these behaviours to help calm themselves when they are stressed or anxious, but many autistic people do it because they find it enjoyable.
Change to routine can also be very distressing for autistic people and make them very anxious. It could be having to adjust to big events like Christmas or changing schools, facing uncertainty at work, or something simpler like a bus detour that can trigger their anxiety.
What Is The Prevalence Of Autism
Autism Spectrum Disorder is found in all cultures and across all socio-economic groups. In the past 40 years, the prevalence rate of Autism has skyrocketed. In 2018, the Centers for Disease and Control Prevention reported an estimated 1 out of every 59 children have ASD.
Why the increase? No one knows for sure. Some epidemiologists point to an increasing awareness of the disorder as a key contributing factor. In addition, the diagnostic criteria for autism has changed with time, reflecting the latest research evidence, and the revised criteria are broader and therefore have contributed to the increased number of children being diagnosed with autism. Others view the impact of environmental factors as a contributing cause. As more research is conducted, this question may soon be answered.
According to the CDC, boys are 4 times more likely to be diagnosed with ASD than girls . Some experts have theorized that this ratio is misleading, however, pointing to the fact that girls are more likely to develop compensatory social mechanisms to mask their symptoms and, therefore, end up being misdiagnosed or fail to be diagnosed at all.

How Is Asd Diagnosed
ASD symptoms can vary greatly from person to person depending on the severity of the disorder. Symptoms may even go unrecognized for young children who have mild ASD or less debilitating handicaps.
Autism spectrum disorder is diagnosed by clinicians based on symptoms, signs, and testing according to the Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders-V, a guide created by the American Psychiatric Association used to diagnose mental disorders. Children should be screened for developmental delays during periodic checkups and specifically for autism at 18- and 24-month well-child visits.
Very early indicators that require evaluation by an expert include:
- no babbling or pointing by age 1
- no single words by age 16 months or two-word phrases by age 2

One In 44 Us Children Diagnosed With Autism New Data Suggests
New autism numbers released Thursday suggest more U.S. children are being diagnosed with the developmental condition and at younger ages.
In an analysis of 2018 data from nearly a dozen states, researchers at the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention found that among 8-year-olds, 1 in 44 had been diagnosed with autism. That rate compares with 1 in 54 identified with autism in 2016.
U.S. autism numbers have been on the rise for several years, but experts believe that reflects more awareness and wider availability of services to treat the condition rather than a true increase in the number of affected children.
A separate CDC report released Thursday said that children were 50 percent more likely to be diagnosed with autism by age 4 in 2018 than in 2014.
There is some progress being made and the earlier kids get identified, the earlier they can access services that they might need to improve their developmental outcome, said CDC researcher and co-author Kelly Shaw.
Is There Any Room For Hope In The Face Of These Grim Statistics
We tend to talk about autism in terms of individual factors, but I think its time as a field and community that we start to think about all of the things that happen outside the individual, like their family and community sources of support, whether thats support groups, social groups, church, or other things.
One of the most hopeful adult studies in the last 20 years found that half of the autistic adults had good or very good outcomes in terms of active social lives and employment. They were part of a Latter Day Saints community in Utah, so they had a community around them to support them. Social groups or community groups that give people a place to go once a week where people care about you can lifechanging.
So lets get people more hangouts with friends, more social interactions. And at the same time, lets recognize that while quantity may be important to some people, we need to consider what the individual wants in terms of social interaction.

Autism Rates By Gender
- About 4 times as many boys have been diagnosed with autism as girls.
