Who Determines What Is Evidence

There are two main organizations who have independently reviewed the scientific literature and research on treatments for autism, and provided reports on treatments that are considered evidence based.

The National Standards Project published their first report in 2009 based on research and data from 1957-2007. They updated this report in 2015 to include research and data from 2007-2012. They are currently in the process of reviewing research and data from 2012-2018, with a plan to release that report in 2021. In their second report, they also included research on treatments for individuals age 22+.

The National Professional Development Center on Autism Spectrum Disorder, also reviewed scientific literature and research, publishing a report based on data from 1997-2007 in their initial report. This was updated in their second review to include research from 1990-2011, with plans for a third report including data through 2017 to be released in the coming year. These reports only provide information on evidence-based treatment for individuals age 0-21.

A large majority of ABA practitioners specialise in autism, although BCBA certification does not require any autism training. ABA-based techniques are often used to teach adaptive behaviors or to diminish behaviors associated with autism, so much that ABA itself is often mistakenly considered to be synonymous with therapy for autism. According to a paper from 2007, it was considered to be an effective “intervention for challenging behaviors” by the American Academy of Pediatrics. A 2018 Cochrane review of five studies that compared treatment vs. control showed that ABA may be effective for some autistic children. However, the quality of the evidence was weak the number of subjects in the studies was small, and only one study randomized subjects into control and treatment groups. Aba Is Just Using Discrete Trials

Um, no. Just no. This is probably what most people have had experience with but it most definitely is NOT the extent of how we can use ABA even within the autism field. Discrete trials are ONE tool in the ABA basket, but its not the extent of instruction. If you have ever used Reading Mastery you have used ABAdirect instruction is based on ABA. ABA includes many naturalistic approaches to teaching such as Pivotal Response Training and incidental teaching. If you have had training in discrete trials, you have had training in ONE tool from ABA. I will talk extensively about discrete trials in future posts and it is a very useful tool, but its not the only one you need for effective instruction.

Although ABA is common, it is not entirely without controversy. Autistic children grow into autistic adults, and several of them have grown to express frustration with the goals of ABA therapy. Namely, they find it frustrating that the therapy seeks to make them seem more normal.

This implies that there is a way to be normal. They prefer that the allistic world learns to accept a range of neurodiversity. They would like to change the world, not to change themselves to fit the world.

The belief is that different is not the same as abnormal. They feel that rhetoric exists that suggests that children who dont undergo ABA therapy are hopeless, which is damaging.

Other forms of therapy for autism do exist but are rarely presented as options for parents. After a new diagnosis, parents are often overwhelmed. They may not be in a position to do extensive research and will go with the most visible treatment option.

ABA is not the only form of therapy that exists. You should look into all available options and find practitioners that share your beliefs.
