Oskar Schell Extremely Loud & Incredibly Close

5 Sheldon Cooper Autism Traits (VERY INTERESTING)

Nine-year old Oskar Schells tests for Aspergers may have come back inconclusive , but this smart-as-a-whip boys aversion to loud noises, lack of comfort in social interactions, obsessive compulsive tendencies, and fixation with numbers all suggest some sort of diagnosis somewhere on the Spectrum. Oskars character has been the subject of heated debates between those in the autism community who find Oskar inspiring and relatable, and critics who found the movie-version Oskar to be everything from creepy to totally weird. Regardless of the criticisms, Oskar Schell was one of the first autistic main characters in a bestseller, and undeniably paved the way for more characters like him.

Understanding And Embracing Diversity

Aspergers Syndrome is a form of Autism that is in the mild end of the autism spectrum. Similar to other forms of autism, AS is characterized by deficits in social communication, social interaction and imagination, but usually have average or above average IQ levels. People with AS always think literally, have little to no clue about facial expressions, tone of voice, and gestures. They find other people difficult to read, hence may view others actions as confusing and also fail to behave in socially appropriate ways. Most conversations with them are one-sided, with them leading and rarely taking your opinions. Finally, they stick to their routines and have a special interest that they may excell on.

Also, he is incapable of faking his emotions in order to avoid hurting other peoples feelings. In the video below, Sheldon does not agree that Raj is getting featured in Time Magazines 30 under 30 issue. As a result, he insulted Raj. His friends then decided to invite Raj to dinner. Notice how Sheldon asks how he can fake his happiness. Children who have AS are often given social stories which teaches them how to behave appropriately in different social situations.

Detective Sonya Cross The Bridge

One of the few shows to actually use the word Aspergers to describe its main character is The Bridge. Based on a popular Swedish drama, the show follows Sonya Cross, a detective working to solve a politically charged murder along the U.S. -Mexico border. Detective Cross often tends to be an over-the-top version of a woman with Aspergers. She doesnt make eye contact, often spouts off inappropriate comments, and barely shows an ounce of empathy over the course of the series things which may or may not be very realistic, depending upon who you ask. Still, most agree that actress Diane Krugers raw and heartfelt portrayal of the detective goes in the right direction when it comes to portraying characters on the Autism Spectrum.

An extreme attachment to ritual is Sheldon’s place on the couch.

Donald Morton And Isabel Sorenson Mozart And The Whale

Mozart and the Whale has not one, but two main characters with Aspergers Syndrome. Donald , a taxi driver with passions for birds and numbers, spends his days driving the same patters and routines, and his evenings leading an autism support group. When he meets Isabel , another Aspie who joins his group, he almost immediately begins to fall in love. The film follows the course of their relationship, and the challenges that come about. The theme here isnt really different than any other romantic comedy: Donald and Isabel must accept their own and each others differences in order to become stronger as a couple.

Daniel Connolly Ps I Love You

Fictional characters on the autism spectrum arent often part of a romantic comedy, at least not in a serious sense, but the 2007 film P.S. I Love You includes the wonderful character of Daniel, a bartender with Aspergers who falls in love with Holly, played by Hilary Swank. While musician-turned-actor Harry Connick, Jr. certainly knew what Aspergers was when he took on the role, he acknowledged the challenge that comes with playing such a character, specifically Daniels tendency to say whatever comes to his mind. Daniel may not get the girl in the end, but his inclusion is this big-budget mainstream film was a big step forward for characters on the autism spectrum.

Film Editor Joe Holloran Examines The Ways In Which Autism Spectrum Disorder Is Portrayed On The Small Screen

    Sheldon and autism
When it comes to more diverse representation on TV, producers and creators have become more attuned to the representational needs of the wider public over the last decade or so. Sadly, there are some groups for whom this revolution bypassed. One of those is people on the autism spectrum .

Author’s note: You can read part 2 of this series by clicking this link.

I was diagnosed as having Asperger’s Syndrome back in 2016. I, therefore, identify as an ‘Aspie’. This type of autism is as complex in scope and as varied in impact as all other forms, but some common traits include: repetitive and restricted interests, sensory sensitivity, issues with socialization and more prominent literal thinking.

When you think of an autistic character from film or TV what comes to mind? I don’t know for sure but I can take an educated guess that you are probably thinking of Raymond Babbitt from Rain Man . Don’t get me wrong, Rain Man is an excellent film and, for its time, actually portrays ASD quite sympathetically. But, Babbitt is only one portrayal of a vast condition and one that is now over thirty-years old.

Although he does improve in this regard in the last few seasons, this is still the biggest issue for me with the character of Sheldon Cooper. The popularity of the show means that for a whole generation, he is the autistic person they know and now because of his behaviour many of the negative stereotypes around ASD will forever be reinforced in the minds of the audience.

    Does Penny And Sheldon Kiss

For The Big Bang Theory, that relationship they just love to tease is, of course, Sheldon and Penny’s. There have been two fantasy dream sequences about the pair in romantic situations — one in which Penny attempts to sleep with Sheldon, and the other in which the two kiss passionately right in front of Leonard.

    Dr Temperance Bones Brennan Bones

Aspergers in women is often much harder to detect and diagnose due to symptoms that are often subtle and widely varying, which may explain why female characters with Aspergers are so rare. But one such female Aspie is Dr. Temperance Bones Brennan on the hit crime drama Bones. Though actress Emily Deschanel and series creator Hart Hanson will only go as far as to say that Brennan almost has Aspergers, the series heroine displays a number of telltale signs: a lack of interest in being social, a sharp intellect and knack for scientific facts, and an elementary understanding of sarcasm. Aspergers or not, Brennan is easily one of the most interesting and likable characters on TV.

Are There Positive Role Models For People With Autism

As a mentor to young children, I am often asked about positive role models who are also on the autism spectrum in their community. Lisbeth Salander The Girl With The Dragon Tattoo

Sheldon Cooper & Dr. Brennan: Autistic?!

Though author Stieg Larsson never uses the words autism or Aspergers to describe the titular character of Lisbeth Salander, co-protagonist Mikael Blomkvist often wonders aloud if the girl has the latter. Indeed, the withdrawn Lisbeth often avoids social contact, and her knack for facts and computers often falls into the stereotypical representation of those on the Spectrum. Still, we think a Lisbeth with Aspergers is most likely because of the events in the fourth book, The Girl in the Spiders Web, in which Lisbeth goes out of her way to protect a young, non-verbal, Autistic savant who witnesses his fathers brutal murder.

‘we Spend Our Lives Acting Normal’

I have a theory as to why people on the spectrum are drawn to the arts.

We spend our lives “acting normal” and studying human behaviour trying to figure out why people do things.

When the point of art is to recreate life back at an audience it is actually quite a useful thing to do.

While autistic people are drawn to the arts sometimes the arts aren’t always excepting of people on the spectrum.

When I first started university, I wasn’t in a rush to tell people I was autistic considering my less-than-ideal high school experience.

But then a lecturer, who is also a prominent member of the Queensland theatre scene, gave me feedback on my final assessment, telling me to “read the room better”.

You wouldn’t tell a person in a wheelchair to stand up straight but telling someone with a disability that limits their ability to pick up social cues, how they should interact in a social setting, is totally fine apparently.

About 18 months ago, two years after the incident, I ran into that lecturer at a theatre event and we spoke about the feedback over a beer.

He said that while he suspected I was on the spectrum he wasn’t certain, and he thought the correct response was to treat me like I was not autistic.

On the other hand, telling people I’m on the spectrum hasn’t always been the best.

Later in my university career, I applied for an internship working for a children’s theatre company touring through Queensland Performing Arts Centre , which I didn’t get.

Dr Sheldon Cooper The Big Bang Theory

Easily the most debated character on our list is Dr. Sheldon Cooper of The Big Bang Theory. Does Sheldon actually have Aspergers, and if so, does the show make fun of those on the Spectrum or embrace them through such a quirky, yet lovable character? While we arent totally sure about the answer to those questions , we think co-star Mayim Bialik is right on the money with her statement on the matter: OCD was the topic of my thesis when I did my doctorate. I think that Sheldon would definitely be on the spectrum, as we say. I actually dont think that I would give him the diagnosis of Aspergers. I would give him Obsessive Compulsive probably moderate to severe, Generalized Anxiety Disorder, possibly Social Anxiety Disorder but not pure Aspergers as we know it.

Women with ASD and The Big Bang Theory

What is autism, and what is my experience with it?This year I was diagnosed with high-functioning Autism Spectrum Disorder , but like everyone on the spectrum, I was born with it. High-functioning autism is defined as someone on the spectrum who is both independent and crosses a certain threshold of cognitive ability. Because it has no bearing on the qualitative experience of how an autistic person feels about their own existence, the term has been criticized heavily by autistic people. Growing up, I had a lot of problems both at home and with my classmates, so I did what many high-functioning autistic people do, I focused on school.

In retrospect I was very clearly autistic. Since I was young, evidence was present from organizing my dolls to look aesthetically pleasing instead of playing with them like most other girls, to my reactive fears of knives and anything approximating the mention of sex. I learned social conventions by studying them artificially. I had the same breakfast every day, and if we didnt have one of the ingredients from the correct brand needed to make it, I would skip the meal altogether. My teachers were my favorite friends for the longest time, and when I started dating boys, I got more interested in older intellectuals who had more time to reflect on social interactions, as opposed to taking their social skills for granted. All of these are classic examples of how ASD presents in girls.
