Lets be frank: Some people with ADHD love Adderall because it feels like a booster rocket attached to their back.
The hard truth is, however, is this: You cant depend on a visceral feeling to tell you when the medication is working. In fact, sometimes you wont realize that the medication is workingor causing problems. But the people around you will!
Moreover, relying on that visceral feeling almost guarantees a bad end. Maybe not today. Maybe not tomorrow. But soon. What if youre so strung out you dont even realize it?
Over-relying on a booster rocket to propel you through your day means youre using Adderall as a performance drug, not ADHD treatment. Medication should help create more balance and self-regulation but higher-functioning also requires learning new skills and habits.
Often, patients believe my cautions only after the fact. After all, Im not a doctor. In other words, they write to me after the typical crash. That comes about two months into Adderall usage, in my observation.

Why Has This Malpractice Been Allowed
Why do doctors too often insist on prescribing Adderall to newly diagnosed patients? Especially with so little guidance and failure to use rating scales or seek third-party reports?
Heres one shocking reason: Many prescribers misread a meta-analysis based on old, scant data. A meta-analysis is not established standard of care.

2. This manufacturer has long wielded, in my observation, undue influence over most ADHD websites and personalities you see online. Unfortunately, this includes psychiatrists, psychologists, coaches, and non-profits, including board members and conference speakers and organizers. Most people would be shocked at how this one pharma covertly pushes its agenda through so many tentacles. And what a weird agenda it is.
3, Too many prescribers remain clueless, cavalier, and disconnected from consequences. I dont say this to discourage seeking treatment! Instead, I want you to be a savvy healthcare consumer.
Why havent other ADHD experts calling this out? Youd have to ask them.
Taking Adderall Without Adhd
Doctors may sometimes prescribe Adderall for medical conditions other than ADHD or narcolepsy, such as to help with treatment-resistant depression.
Adderall is also frequently abused or obtained illegally without a prescription. Its one of the most widely abused prescription drugs in the U.S., often misused to help people study, accomplish more or feel more sociable. On campuses across the U.S., its not uncommon for students to use the drug around exam time or to perform well in school. Young professionals may do the same thing to get ahead in their careers. Adderall is also sometimes used illicitly to help people lose weight since the drug is an appetite suppressant.

Boxed Warning: Risk Of Misuse
This medication has a boxed warning from the Food and Drug Administration . This is the strongest warning that the FDA requires. A boxed warning alerts doctors and patients about drug effects that may be dangerous.
Adderall and similar medications have the potential to be misused.
Taking these medications for long periods of time can cause psychological and physical dependence. This may lead to obtaining Adderall illegally and using it for nonmedical purposes.
Misuse of Adderall may cause serious side effects, including heart problems and death.
What Does An Adderall High Feel Like
At a prescribed, safe, and monitored dose, Adderall treats symptoms of attention deficit hyperactivity disorder . It helps improve hyperactivity, impulse control, and attention span. When people abuse Adderall, the high can make them feel like they are capable of doing anything. The person may have increased alertness, energy, and a false sense of wellbeing. Adderall can also cause feelings of euphoria as dopamine levels to rise in the brain. Users may also experience increased feelings of confidence, a rush of excitement, and a decreased appetite or need for sleep.
People may perceive their Adderall use as an effective way of getting things done. Many will see a short-term increase in grades, work performance, or ability to complete tasks. With prolonged abuse, and as tolerance increases, those effects diminish. More of the drug is required to achieve the same high. More is also needed to minimize the negative side effects that become more prevalent with increased abuse.

How Can I Get Adderall
Adderall and other pharmaceutical central nervous system stimulants, such as Ritalin, are prescription drugs. You cannot legally purchase it without a prescription. Some people buy it illegally from a person with a prescription who is selling the drug onwards, but this is dangerous. Not only is it illegal, but you have no access to support if you suffer from severe side effects.

Prescription Stimulant Misuse In Athletes
ADHD is a controversial problem in sport as participants with this disorder often require banned stimulants while competing. Many of the governing bodies of competitive sports have developed regulations that limit the use of stimulant medications to treat ADHD. In other cases, stimulant use is allowed in the setting of a documented diagnosis of ADHD. Most sports organizations around the world now follow the guidelines set forth by the World Anti-Doping Agency . According to this document, the diagnosis of ADHD is to be made by experienced clinicians and in accordance to the DSM-IV. Stimulant medications are considered to be a medical best practice treatment that do require the athlete to file a therapeutic use exemption . A TUE gives athletes with medical diagnoses an exemption to use a drug normally prohibited by MLB, to treat a legitimately diagnosed medical condition. WADA recommends reassessments of continued treatment every 34 months. Other organizations, such as the National College Athletic Association and individual professional leagues, such as the National Football League and Major League Baseball , have developed their own regulations.
Some athletes will only take medications episodically for school testing or for studying purposes. Others may feel that their sport performance is improved on stimulants, whereas others may temporarily stop taking them so that their sports play is more random and unfocused, which they feel improves their performance .

The FDA categorizes Adderall as a Level II drug, meaning it is highly addictive. When you take unprescribed Adderall or a higher dosage than that prescribed by your doctor, you are likely to develop a dependence on the substance.

F Prescribers Failing To Seek Third
Please understand: Richard Fees parents have my deepest sympathies. It seems they truly tried to warn the physicians of what was happening to their son.
This story is not new to me. The partners of adults with ADHD try desperately to get through to the Adderall-prescribing physicians. They try explain that their partners are turning into rageaholics.
Yes, there are privacy laws. But that does not mean the prescriber cannot request such feedbacknor cannot accept it.
Did Fee have a condition such as bipolar disorder ? That is, did he have a particular vulnerability to Adderall abuse or addiction? Or, was that particular vulnerability ADHD? Perhaps he was mis-using Adderall to minimize sleep so he could study more and achieve. Thus, he compounded AHDD with sleep deprivation and amphetamine addiction?
Well never know. But I suspect that there were red flags throughout his childhood and young adulthood. And the same will be true of many others.

Why Are Prescription Stimulants Misused
The reasons why prescription stimulants are misused are numerous and include achieving euphoria, and helping cope with stressful factors related to their educational environment. According to a survey of 334 ADHD-diagnosed college students taking prescription stimulants, 25% misused their own prescription medications to get high . Like cocaine, MPH inhibits the DAT, which increases synaptic levels of DA, and this is presumed to mediate MPH’s reinforcing effects and abuse potential. In laboratory studies, it has been shown that animals will repeatedly administer MPH as they do cocaine , and humans receiving both drugs indicate a similar high . A frequent concern regarding the use of stimulants for ADHD is their mechanism of action, which increases DA and thus may increase the risk for overt, illicit drug use. However, research points to the conclusion that people of any age receiving a stimulant for ADHD have no greater risk for illicit substance abuse compared with the general population .

What Does Adderall Do For People With Adhd
“Give them a stimulant and they’re relatively back at ‘normal’,” Arnold says. “That’s because these drugs hike up the neurotransmitter dopamine in the brain’s reward center, which helps people feel more alert and attentive and has a calming effect.”
