When French psychologist Alfred Binet developed the first modern IQ test in the early 1900s, its purpose was to find children who needed special education help. How To Know If Youre Autistic
An autism diagnosis can bring clarity to people who might have gone through their whole lives feeling different or inadequate. When some people receive a diagnosis, they feel as though many things now make sense. Will an autism diagnosis bring clarity to your life? First, you will need to see if you are on the autism spectrum.
This test can help you gauge whether certain behaviors are similar to those who are on the autism spectrum. Your results are not a diagnosis. No one can diagnose themselves with autism. If you believe that you might be autistic, you should reach out to a mental health professional that can evaluate you with proper tools and is certified to diagnose people.
Know that, even though your results may point you to seek an evaluation, you do not have to. Early Tests Predict Intellect In Adults With Autism

This article is more than five years old. Autism research – and science in general – is constantly evolving, so older articles may contain information or theories that have been reevaluated since their original publication date.
Intelligence quotients of toddlers with autism closely predict how they will fare as adults, reports a 17-year study published 9 December in the Journal of Child Psychology and Psychiatry1.
Tests administered between the ages of 2 to 3 years can also forecast whether high-functioning toddlers with autism will have average or higher IQs by age 19 or even beat the odds and overcome their autism diagnoses, the study suggests.
In the brighter kids, we think it does make a difference if parents start doing right away rather than just waiting to see what happens, says lead investigator Catherine Lord, director of the Institute for Brain Development at New York-Presbyterian Hospital.
The report joins a growing number of studies tracking people with autism over long periods of time. In particular, it may boost clinicians confidence that IQ assessments at age 2 or 3 years predict later abilities and behavior, and help clinicians advise parents on a childs outlook.
IQ tests only tell part of the story, however. Its unclear why some of the high-functioning 2-year-olds in the study made great strides by age 3 and later grew out of their autism diagnosis, whereas most of the others did not.

How To Support The Autistic Community
Maybe you are not autistic, but a friend, family member, or colleague is. There are many ways that you can support the autistic and neurodivergent community.
Be very clear with your communication. People with autism are less likely to read between the lines or infer what you are saying. Do not be passive-aggressive or assume that the person will catch your drift. Be clear with your communication. Tell the person what you need from them and your expectations in blunt terms. Communicating in this way may make you a better communicator overall!
Provide accommodations. Noise-canceling headphones, fidget cubes, and kneeling chairs are all tools that a person with autism may use to be more productive at work. Ask teammates or employees how best to accommodate them and provide those accommodations without judgment. Be sure to ask all teammates how to best accommodate them, too! This openness will ultimately create a more productive workplace.
Stick to a schedule. Whether you have a child with autism or work with an adult with autism, be cognizant of their routine. If you need to change that routine, communicate those changes clearly and early.

Autistic Individuals Require Specialized Iq Tests
Its not surprising that IQ testing for individuals with ASD is even more complex and controversial.
Since verbal skills deficits are one of the key symptoms of autism, IQ testing that relies heavily on those skills for the assessment normally falls flat. Historically, IQ tests have been built assuming age-appropriate language skills. But with their delayed verbal communication development, these tests routinely showed autism patients as being less intelligent.
Weschler and other mainstream IQ tests have attempted to adapt to this issue by incorporating more non-verbal sub-components. There are also a number of test batteries expressly designed for non-verbal test-takers.
Unfortunately, most of the specifically-designed non-verbal intelligence tests have not yet caught up to the modern approach of testing separate aspects of intelligence. TONI , perhaps the most popular IQ test for ASD, is a unidimensional test, as are the Naglieri Nonverbal Intelligence Index and Ravens Progressive Matrices tests.
