Solving For Complex Learners: Nyc Autism Charter School

Twenty-five years ago, CRPE was founded on the idea of the school as the locus of change. Today we are reexamining our old assumptions in light of new technical possibilities, changes in the economy, and a recognition that even the most effective schools may need to develop new approaches to better serve students whose needs warrant more individualized learning pathways or supports. This post is part of a series on what the school or learning system of the next 25 years might look like.

My day at the NYC Autism Charter School began by joining the staff to help welcome each of the 33 students into the school with smiles, high fives, and big hellos. Despite their profound autism, nearly all of the students ride the buses provided by the New York City Department of Education to school each day and walk independently to their classrooms. That might not seem remarkable, but consider that most of these students are significantly verbally and cognitively impaired and many deal with severe anxiety and frustration from trying to navigate a world that overwhelms and confounds them. To help their students succeed each morning and afternoon, staff dot the stairwell and occasionally ride the buses to provide guardrails for the students, standing back as much as possible to encourage independence.

  • Make a list of the factors that are most important for your child’s success, in order from most to least important.
  • Using the factors on the list, conduct multiple searches. Mix and match the factors.
  • As you search you should begin a chart for comparing schools of interest.
  • The more searches you conduct, the more options you will be presented with.
  • When you have identified several good options, you can compare them within the chart.
  • Narrow down the choices.
  • When you have a couple of good choice schools you will need to contact each school to set up a tour and a meet and greet with faculty.
  • When attending the meet and greets, you will want to observe as much as possible, any interactions between your child and staff that end negatively are major red flags.
  • Combine all of the evidence and discuss the choice with your child.

If you are living New York City and are in search for schools that specialize in working with children who have been diagnosed with autism, take a look at our list of 6 best NYC schools for children with autism.

Selecting a proper school for a child is a big decision for every parent. However, the stakes are even higher for parents who have children with autism. Autism spectrum disorder refers to a range of complex neurodevelopment disorders characterized by repetitive patterns of behavior, difficulties with communication and interaction with other people.

The symptoms are often present from early childhood and affect childs daily functioning. Some children with ASD avoid eye contact, have delayed speech and language skills, or become preoccupied with repetitive behavior. Despite the fact that there is no cure for autism, it is treated with behavioral interventions and therapies. According to National Institute of Neurological Disorders and Stroke, ideal interventions are those designed to meet the specific needs of the individual. Since autism appears in many different forms and with various symptoms, therapy for each individual must vary accordingly. These therapies are often skill-oriented training sessions that help children to develop social and language skills.

Nyc Autism Charter School Management Review

    #Giving Tuesday

The NYC Autism Charter School was founded in 2005 as a project under the umbrella of New York Collaborates for Autism by two mothers who were committed to creating a school that would offer a high-quality education to its students at no cost to their families. Over the past ten years, the NYC Autism Charter School has grown to eight classrooms currently serving more than 30 students each year. The NYC Autism Charter School is the only public charter school devoted solely to children with autism and is committed to offering a high-quality education option to families across the five boroughs of New York City. Its educational program offers individualized and evidence-based instruction rooted in the principles of Applied Behavior Analysis and a 1:1 teacher/student ratio in six of its eight classrooms. NYC Autism Charter School shares a building with P.S./IS 50, a district public school located in East Harlem, giving admission preference to children living in East Harlem, and facilitates opportunities for its students to interact with typically developing peers in the local community. The NYC Autism Charter School also provides students opportunities to learn and practice job skills in real work environments through partnerships with local businesses and organizations, such as CLDS, El Museo del Barrio, Facebook, Fairway Market, Harlem RBI, and White Castle.
