In an opinion piece for The Student Life, the newspaper of Claremont Colleges, writer Donnie Denome declares, Its not that I want Autism Speaks to get with the program. Its that I dont trust Autism Speaks, or organizations like them that treat disabled people like suffering burdens on our family members, to change in any meaningful way or to value neurodiversity without distorting the concept beyond all recognition. I have no time or energy for groups that view me as a parasite or infected appendage on the body of my neurotypical loved ones.

The second annual Light It Up Blue car parade featured about 20 vehicles and passed through nearly every neighborhood in Calipatria, starting from west to east.
World Autism Awareness Day, which is observed April 2, aims to increase understanding and acceptance of people with autism, foster worldwide support and inspire a kinder, more inclusive world.
The color blue is associated with the global organization Autism Speaks, as well as symbolizing a feeling of calm and acceptance in a world that can be very loud and challenging at times for a person on the spectrum.

Halloween Blue Bucket Autism Link Explained: How The Trick
A blue Halloween bucket has become an unofficial symbol of awareness for autism. If you see a trick-or-treater holding a blue pumpkin candy bucket at your doorstep, it could mean the person is autistic.
The phenomenon took off last year after Alicia Plumer shared an image of a blue Halloween bucket on social media announcing her autistic son would be carrying the item while trick-or-treating.
“If you see someone who appears to be an adult dressed up to trick-or-treat this year carrying this blue bucket, he’s our son! His name is BJ & he is autistic. While he has the body of a 21 year old, he loves Halloween,” she posted on Facebook.
“Please help us keep his spirit alive & happy. So when you see the blue bucket share a piece of candy. Spread awareness! These precious people are not “too big” to trick or treat,” she added.
Plumer’s message received widespread attention on social media and has been shared nearly 28,000 times on Facebook since it was first posted last year on October 18.
“This trend seems to be gaining momentum. As the general public becomes more aware of it, we think it could be a wonderful way for kids the little ones and the bigger onesto participate in Halloween festivities without the judgment that they sometimes face in social situations,” Wendy Fournier, president of the National Autism Association, told Newsweek.

Advocates Show Support With Color Blue
One of the premier ways that advocates around the world are able to show their support during Autism Awareness Month is by participating in the “Light It Up Blue” event. Headed by the Autism Speaks organization, Light It Up Blue sees landmarks, homes and buildings all over use blue lights to raise awareness of Autism Awareness Day, which falls on April 2 this year. In addition to manufactured lighting, natural lighting also has its affects. Natural lighting has proven benefits for autistic children. Seasonal affective disorder, or SAD, caused by a lack of natural light during winter months, can foster behavioral issues and depression. Natural light has been shown to relieve these symptoms.
Light therapy has been used for more than just to relieve these symptoms. Natural light can help regulate a childs circadian rhythms. These rhythms govern our bodys internal master clock. For example, they tell us when its time to sleep. A lack of natural light can cause our rhythms to fall out of sync. Therefore, treatment can make a child with insomnia fall asleep without aids and become more alert during the day, among other benefits.
