What Do Blue Light Glasses Do

Light It Up Blue for Autism

Blue light glasses help to filter out blue light rays. If you have a pair, you can see the difference for yourself point a blue light pen at one lens, and youll notice immediately that the brightness getting through the lens becomes much weaker compared to what happens with a regular unfiltered lens.

A Big No To Fluorescent Lights

Fluorescent lights are disturbing for people with light sensitivity so you can start with eliminating them in order to ease people with Autism and ADHD. They are too bright, have a high concentration of blue light and they flicker which can be a trigger for a lot of people. Several people with ADHD have claimed fluorescent lights have made them feel hazy or distracted them in classrooms or workplaces.

For those with autism, it can trigger a range of problems from inducing drowsiness to distraction or excessive eyestrain. You can try replacing this harsh light with incandescent lighting. Studies have shown that exposure to incandescent lighting has no effect on the frequency of stereotypical behaviours among autistics as opposed to increased frequency when exposed to fluorescent lighting.

You can get fluorescent light filters which are great for blocking blue light and it also makes sure that the light is evenly distributed across space.

Since I Am Not Autistic I Am Choosing Not To Speak For The Autistic Community

Rather than explaining in my own words, I am encouraging you to use some of your precious time to seek out this information on your own and read the many, many accounts available from autistic people. To get you started, here are a few direct quotes from autistic adults who have written their opinions about Autism Speaks.

In an article posted on the Autistic Women and Nonbinary Networks website, writer Amy Sequenzia says, Autisms Speaks reaches out to families by listing the deficits, difficulties and pain an Autistic child will experience forever Autism Speaks makes videos that paints autism as the cause of all the troubles in the world Autism Speaks has no problem in allowing a board member to advertise her macabre wish to murder her Autistic daughter.

In an opinion piece for The Student Life, the newspaper of Claremont Colleges, writer Donnie Denome declares, Its not that I want Autism Speaks to get with the program. Its that I dont trust Autism Speaks, or organizations like them that treat disabled people like suffering burdens on our family members, to change in any meaningful way or to value neurodiversity without distorting the concept beyond all recognition. I have no time or energy for groups that view me as a parasite or infected appendage on the body of my neurotypical loved ones.

Green Porch Light Meaning

Green lights also have two potential meanings support for military vets and to raise awareness for muscular dystrophy.

Green porch lights have a few different possible meanings, usually depending on the time of year. The most common use of green light is to show support for military veterans. Its part of a program called Greenlight a Vet.

The program is meant to create awareness of the many challenges vets face when returning to civilian life. The use of green porch lights is usually at peak popularity around Veterans Day .

However, the organizers of the campaign encourage everyone to keep at least one green light visible all year long. Green porch lights have a few other potential meanings, too. Heads up this gets a little confusing:

  • The Light It Up Green campaign aims to raise awareness of muscular dystrophy. Youll see this most often in August, which is Muscular Dystrophy Awareness Month.
  • A different Light It Up Green campaign also encourages the use of green porch lights, this time for Mays Lyme Disease Awareness Month.
  • If you see a green light in March, the homeowners might be celebrating Saint Patricks Day.

While there are multiple meanings, most green porch lights signify support for vets.

Reasons To Wear #redinstead On April 2nd

If you want to show solidarity or support of individuals on the spectrum on World Autism Day, dont light it up blue, wear #RedInstead. Why? The simplest reason is because thats what #ActuallyAutistic people are asking you to do. Here is why they are trying to change the symbolism of autism advocacy:

  • Light it up Blue is a slogan and advocacy symbol used by Autism Speaks, an organization notoriously condemned by Autistic adults due to their historical emphasis on a cure, the disproportionate funds allocated to research and marketing vs. helping autistic individuals and their families throughout their lifespans, and its lack of autistic leadership.
  • Blue is typically understood to be a symbol of loss, grief, and despair. Not surprisingly, many autistics prefer to be associated with a color that symbolizes fire, passion, and heart.
  • Some Autistic adults point out that the color blue perpetuates the stereotype that boys are much more likely to be on the spectrum. There is much debate about the validity of these statistics since the diagnostic criteria may have been written to fit with male behavior, and girls may be more successful at masking Autistic symptoms.
  • Imagine someone else wearing a #RedInstead t-shirt on World Autism Day. How might that conversation go? I can imagine something like:

    What does #RedInstead mean?

Its in support of the Autistic community. Today is World Autism Day.

Oh! I thought blue represented autism?

Halloween Blue Bucket Autism Link Explained: How The Trick

Light it up blue for autism awareness in Traverse City

A blue Halloween bucket has become an unofficial symbol of awareness for autism. If you see a trick-or-treater holding a blue pumpkin candy bucket at your doorstep, it could mean the person is autistic.

The phenomenon took off last year after Alicia Plumer shared an image of a blue Halloween bucket on social media announcing her autistic son would be carrying the item while trick-or-treating.

“If you see someone who appears to be an adult dressed up to trick-or-treat this year carrying this blue bucket, he’s our son! His name is BJ & he is autistic. While he has the body of a 21 year old, he loves Halloween,” she posted on Facebook.

“Please help us keep his spirit alive & happy. So when you see the blue bucket share a piece of candy. Spread awareness! These precious people are not “too big” to trick or treat,” she added.

Plumer’s message received widespread attention on social media and has been shared nearly 28,000 times on Facebook since it was first posted last year on October 18.

“This trend seems to be gaining momentum. As the general public becomes more aware of it, we think it could be a wonderful way for kids the little ones and the bigger onesto participate in Halloween festivities without the judgment that they sometimes face in social situations,” Wendy Fournier, president of the National Autism Association, told Newsweek.

Advocates Show Support With Color Blue

One of the premier ways that advocates around the world are able to show their support during Autism Awareness Month is by participating in the “Light It Up Blue” event. Headed by the Autism Speaks organization, Light It Up Blue sees landmarks, homes and buildings all over use blue lights to raise awareness of Autism Awareness Day, which falls on April 2 this year. The show of unity resonates across the nation, as well as the globe, Autism Speaks said in 2017 that there were participants from 170 countries and from all seven continents.

Another way to raise awareness is by sharing the puzzle ribbon. Like most causes, autism awareness has a specific ribbon, which features a puzzle pattern design. Displaying the ribbon pin or other media allows advocates to promote the cause directly and encourage others interested in learning more to seek out resources.

Autism awareness has an increasing role in the public health discussion, and supporting causes like Autism Awareness Month can help stakeholders find solutions for the future.

    Blue Porch Light Meaning

Light It Up Blue for World Autism Awareness Day Mariposa ...

Blue porch lights have two potential meanings Autism awarness and law enforcement support.

    Autism Awareness

A blue porch light is most commonly used to show support for people with autism. In 2007, the UN Assembly officially declared April 2nd as World Autism Day.

Three years later, the autism advocacy group Autism Speaks attempted to increase awareness of World Autism Day by launching the Light It Up Blue campaign. The color blue is used around the world to represent autism.

The Light It Up Campaign encouraged people to put blue bulbs in any house lights visible to the public, such as porch lights. Although April 2nd is the official day, most people keep their blue lights shining during the entire month.

    Law Enforcement Support

Although not as widely known as its use for autism awareness, a blue porch light also signifies support for police officers, sheriffs, and other members of law enforcement.

The program, called Project Blue Light, originated back in 1989 by the Concerns of Police Survivors . It had twin goals: to show support for law enforcement and to commemorate those who died in the line of duty.

Although the program started several decades before Light It Up Blue, autism awareness has emerged as the default meaning behind blue porch lights. However, if you see a blue porch light during the Christmas holidays, its likely meant to show police support.

How Light Sensitivity Affects Those With Autism

With as many as 90-95% of people with autism spectrum disorder having external sensitivities, it is not surprising that exposure to bright light can affect their symptoms. Studies have shown that it may not be as prominent as other sensory problemsnotably hearing and touchbut one small study has pegged that more than half of autistic adolescents have visual processing deficits, including sensitivity to light.2 Other analyses have noted that hypersensitivity to light and photophobia increases with autistic traits as well.3

How Light Can Help Autistic Children

Skylanders SuperChargers Power Blue Overview: Activision Autism Speaks – Light It Up Blue!

Light can have a deep influence on people. Different colored lighting can affect our moods, and a lack of natural light can cause depression. This especially applies to those with autism.

Children with autism are especially susceptible to mood changes due to lighting. Lights with mellow colors, like blue, can help a child relax and become creative. Flickering, humming or harshly colored lights, on the other hand, can confuse and even hurt them. For this reason, it is important that lighting is controllable and monitored in the childs rooms.

In addition to manufactured lighting, natural lighting also has its affects. Natural lighting has proven benefits for autistic children. Seasonal affective disorder, or SAD, caused by a lack of natural light during winter months, can foster behavioral issues and depression. Natural light has been shown to relieve these symptoms.

Light therapy has been used for more than just to relieve these symptoms. Natural light can help regulate a childs circadian rhythms. These rhythms govern our bodys internal master clock. For example, they tell us when its time to sleep. A lack of natural light can cause our rhythms to fall out of sync. Therefore, treatment can make a child with insomnia fall asleep without aids and become more alert during the day, among other benefits.

    Purple Porch Light Meaning

Purple porch lights raise awareness for domestic violence.

The awareness campaign dates back to 2007. The Domestic Violence Task Force, an advocacy group based in Washington state, created the Purple Light Nights, encouraging the use of purple porch lights to raise awareness of domestic violence, honor the survivors, and mourn the victims.

Youll most commonly see purple lights during October, which is Domestic Violence Awareness Month. While you can buy purple bulbs, they dont always create a purple color. Try using blacklights, which can create a deeper, more authentic purple.

Does A Red Porch Light Mean The Person Sells Drugs

Were not sure why red bulbs spawn so many strange and false ideas, but this is another one. The urban myth says that drug dealers use red bulbs to signal the availability of drugs for sale.

Of course, if that were true, the police would certainly have an easier time catching criminals. The big takeaway here is you can show your support for any of the causes above without worrying about the police knocking down your door.
