How Is Autism Related To Cognition

Impairments in intellectual function may accompany autism spectrum disorders, but the association is not inevitable . Asperger syndrome, in particular, is defined by patterns of autism-like traits, but unimpaired cognitive function.

The AQ is designed primarily for adults with autistic traits who are not severely intellectually impaired. The cognitive tasks at the core of CBS Health may be used to assess how individuals compare to peers of the same age in terms of cognitive functioning.

Some individuals high in autistic traits may actually have an advantage in certain cognitive tasks that require visual processing or attention to detail . A short, widely used screening survey for autism called the Autism Spectrum Quotient 10 items may not be reliable for measuring traits of the condition in the general population, according to a study of more than 6,500 adults1.

The test, a 10-item questionnaire that was adapted from the 50-item Autism Spectrum Quotient , initially was intended to flag adults who might require diagnostic evaluation for autism. But in recent years, many researchers have used it to assess autism traits in large studies of the general population.

The new paper raises questions about this use. Its not quite as good as we think it is, and it might not be reliable, says lead investigator Punit Shah, assistant professor of psychology at the University of Bath in the United Kingdom.

The results are consistent with those from a smaller study, published last year, that also documented problems with the tool2.

The findings suggest that more research into the AQ-10 is needed, experts say and that it may ultimately be necessary to develop an alternative.

Lets not just blindly use what is the most popular thing, says Ronnie Jia, associate professor of information systems at Illinois State University in Normal, who was not involved in the new study. If its not empirically reliable, you unfortunately cant really use it because you dont really know what youre measuring.

What Does My Score Mean

The AQ doesnt really offer much insight into specific autistic traits, as it only outputs a single score. Any scores of 26 or greater indicate the presence of autistic traits the higher the score, the more autistic traits you have.

Furthermore, 79.3% of autistic people score 32 or higher , so scores of 32 and above are particularly significant. The AQ is particularly sensitive in distinguishing between autistic and non-autistic adult females, as 92.3% of autistic females scored 32 or higher .The Autism-Spectrum Quotient Adolescent Version

Do note that no single test is conclusive, and not every autistic person necessarily scores above the defined threshold on each test. If you score low on the AQ but still think you could be autistic, try taking a few other autism tests.

Gender And Aq Total And Subscale Scores

Past research has shown there to be gender differences in Total AQ score, with males scoring higher than females in Total AQ and on the subscales such as social skills, communication, and imagination . This is found to be especially so in general population cohorts. Following on from this, the mean scores of Total AQ scores by gender and diagnosis were analysed .5).

The mean score comparisons for gender and AQ Total score show that TD males scored slightly higher than TD females and that ASD males scored marginally lower than females on Total AQ score. The total AQ scores were analysed separately for both ASD and the TD groups and were found to be normally distributed, Kolmogorov-Smirnov Z = 1.04, P> .05 and Z = 0.75, P> .05, respectively. Figure 1 reveals that TD individuals had a lower Total AQ score of M = 14.05 , compared to ASD individuals’ Total AQ score of M = 36.04 this difference was significant, t = 25.42, P< .001, and d = 3.62.

Trends In Use Of The Autism

In addition to reviewing the reported AQ scores, an effort was made to qualitatively assess AQ usage for included studies. Several trends were noted in administration and reporting of the full-scale AQ for adults. The majority of studies included in this review had recruited via newspaper adverts, employment agencies, email, post, and flyers. In many cases, the participants were also partially drawn from continuously maintained participant databases and research pools. There was also evidence of partial recruitment through hospitals and universities . In a number of instances, participants were recruited using publicly available online survey tools such as Amazon Mechanical Turk and surveymonkey.com. Finally, several large studies were made possible through the use of birth cohorts, including the Raine Cohort .

How Social Interactions Play A Role In This Assessment
