Advocating For Legislation On Behalf Of Autistic People
He referenced the impact that the Americans With Disabilities Act of 1990 had on people using wheelchairs by requiring ramps in public areas, and said he’d like to see similar legislation enacted to make society more equitable for people on the autism spectrum.
“We’re going to have to evolve as a society to understand what are the barriers for individuals that have autism, that are neurodivergent, and what are the ramps that we have to put in place?” he said.
Mims sees great potential in the lives of his students and the wider autism community, but laments that many still see autism as a disability to be mourned rather than a difference to be celebrated.
“All I can do is really hope and have faith that there will be a change,” he said.
Despite the work that lies ahead, Mims said the progress that’s been made even in the few years since Science Prep Academy opened its doors makes him optimistic about the future.

Types Of Specialty Schools
There are two main types of schools that are equipped to work with your child. The first of these schools is one that works with children who are fully verbal but still have the autism spectrum disorder diagnosis or some other learning problem. This ~issues2 ~ can include dyslexia, Asperger’s and several other obstacles.
The second type of school is one that works with children who are nonverbal or who have other challenging behaviors that would prevent them from succeeding in a current public school. Having these school types available helps the children focus on school without worrying about getting lost in the large numbers of kids in other schools and without dealing with the bullying they may otherwise experience.

Arizona Autism Charter School Opens 4th Location In West Valley
PEORIA 6-year-old Phillip Hallam will be one of 120 students at Arizona Autism Charter School’s newest location in Peoria. ABC15 gets a first look inside Hallam’s new classroom.
Hallam is a second grader who is neurodivergent with Autism Spectrum Disorder.
Instead of just having a child thats neurodivergent sit in a seat and try to learn off a board, they have different stations they can go to, which allows someone who is neurodivergent to keep moving throughout the day which makes them much more successful, says Philips mother, Catherine Hallam.
The Arizona Autism Charter School opening their fourth location in the West Valley to help reach a dire need.
About 30% of the kids here are coming from our Central Phoenix schools, says Diana Diaz-Harrison, founder and executive director at Arizona Autism Charter Schools. We had families traveling for more than an hour each way to reach our downtown schools. Many of them will not have that long commute anymore.
This is welcome news for the Hallam Family. The fact that this is free, is financial freedom to my family, says Hallam.
The tuition-free charter school was built by a $17 million bond financing project by the Maricopa County Industrial Development Authority.
Catherine Hallam moved her family to Arizona from Tennessee for more resources.
If your family is interested in this option, visit Arizona Autism Charter Schools’ website. There are limited spots available.

As a private school, we also have more flexibility in the services that we can offer students on-site, including:
- Tailored curriculum
Our school supports students through a holistic approach, meeting educational, social, and behavioral needs. Were able to ensure that children are receiving the type of services and support they need to thrive.
Our schools can also provide a less traditional format than a mainstream school, and because of our small class sizes, our teachers have more time and bandwidth to help students work through communication and sensory challenges.
At the end of the day, our autism-specialized school recognizes the unique needs of children with autism and offers more support and resources than a public school can. While we recognize that Autism Academy isnt the best fit for all children with autism, we strive to support as many children and families in our community as we can! Answering Questions And Questioning Answers
The greatest hurdle to progress in autism research has been the unwillingness of so many to accept a paradigm shift. Autism is treatable.
Children with autism are medically ill, not psychologically challenged. Identifying and eliminating problematic foods, chemicals, and toxins while correcting nutritional deficiencies and providing the nutrients necessary for normal growth and development is a reasonable and effective strategy. It is critical that parents become educated and informed medical consumers.
Answering questions and questioning answers captures the essence of our mission at CARE.
