Currently, there are relatively few clinicians who specialize in evaluating and treating adults with autism. Nor do we have established criteria to objectively judge such qualifications.
In my opinion, your best bet may be a developmental pediatrician, child psychiatrist or pediatric neurologist who is both experienced in evaluating autism in children and open to seeing older patients. So I would recommend talking to the clinician who diagnosed your child. If she or he does not feel qualified to evaluate an adult, he or she may have a respected colleague who would be.
Otherwise I would recommend contacting an established and respected autism center in your area. Examples include the centers in the Autism Speaks Autism Treatment Network. This will provide you with the assurance that the clinician has agreed to adhere to the centers high standards for care for patients with autism, regardless of age.

The mean age of autism diagnosis in the US and UK is 4 to 5, though later diagnoses do occur . Typically individuals with more severe symptom challenges receive an autism diagnosis early in life compared to those with subtle symptomatic differences . However, this successful adaptation to symptoms often masks an autism diagnosis and leaves many of these individuals to experience autism-related health issues without understanding the root cause .
If You Are Told You Are Not Autistic
Sometimes people are told they aren’t autistic, and sometimes they may be given a diagnosis they don’t agree with.
You can seek a second opinion, which either means going back to your GP to explain that you aren’t happy with your diagnosis and ask them to refer you elsewhere, or paying for a private assessment.

Assessment And Diagnosis In Children And Teenagers
If a child with a developmental delay is suspected of being autistic, an assessment is made by a team of professionals experienced in the field.
The team will be made up of a paediatrician , a psychologist and a speech pathologist. Between them they will carry out a series of different assessments over several appointments.
Once the assessment has been completed, the team will decide if your child meets the criteria for a diagnosis of Autism Spectrum Disorder and a diagnosis will be made.
Diagnosis is usually made from the age of about 18 months onwards. Sometimes a provisional diagnosis is made when the child is very young and is reassessed at a later date.

Arguments For A Standard Assessment Battery
Researchers and clinicians do not always rely on the same set of assessments when evaluating study participants or patients. Narrowing down the current number of assessments to a standardized battery will admittedly be a challenging job. However, the results will benefit all professionals working with individuals with ASD.
With respect to research, for instance, it is preferable to compare findings using the same assessment measures, especially when researchers are attempting to replicate previous findings. As researchers as well as critics often comment, the autism field is replete with mixed findings. Although the heterogeneity of the spectrum is one reason for such discrepancies, the use of different assessment measures is another significant factor.
A standard battery of assessments is the first step needed to develop an evidence-based standard of care for those on the autism spectrum. Now is the time for those of us in the autism field to take this step.

Oxleas Adult Autism Assessment Service Bexley Bromley Greenwich
The Oxleas Adult Assessment service offers ASD assessments to adults over 18, without a learning disability who are registered with a GP in Bromley, Bexley and Greenwich.
The service offers a full ASD diagnostic assessment to adults who have not been assessed or received a diagnosis in childhood. Access to the service is via GP referral, or by referral from another professional who is working with you.
Once referred, you will be asked to complete two screening questionnaires and if the results of the questionnaires suggest that you are reporting sufficient features of possible Autism, you will be put on the waiting list for a full diagnostic assessment.
The outcome of the assessment will indicate whether the threshold for a diagnosis is met or not. Adults would then be signposted to relevant support services as needed.
The team is made up of a range of professionals including Clinical Psychology, Occupational Therapy, and Speech & Language Therapy. All staff have specialist training in autism assessment and diagnosis. Once the assessment begins, adults are allocated a lead clinician and the assessment will be carried out over a short series of appointments. A feedback appointment will then be arranged.
We are not commissioned to provide ongoing support to Adults with ASD and we cannot see people who already have a diagnosis. The service operates Monday – Thursday 9am to 5pm from various sites across Bromley, Bexley and Greenwich boroughs.

Clinicians primarily diagnose adults with ASD through a series of in-person observations and interactions. They also take into consideration any symptoms the person reports experiencing.

Unfortunately, at the moment in Ireland, there are no public assessment teams dedicated to adult diagnoses. Currently, the vast majority of adults who think they might be autistic can only get an assessment privately.
Most private psychologists in Ireland do not require a GP referral to access a psychological assessment for autism. You can self-refer by contacting them directly. It is very important that you undertake an assessment with a professional that is familiar with autism in adults and works in a respectful, neurodiversity affirmative way .
It also may be advisable to talk to your GP. There are many private psychiatrists who do require a GP referral. While your GP may only refer you to a private psychologist or psychiatrist, it is important that your GP understands you, and also is able to see the demand for these assessments in Ireland and advocate for them appropriately. You will need to provide your GP with a very specific list of the reason why you think you might be autistic as they may still hold outdated ideas about autism .
How Does The Assessment Process Work For An Adult
The way the assessment process works for adults can vary across different professionals.Currently in Ireland, an adult autism diagnosis needs to come from a Psychologist or a Psychiatrist. In depth interviews and gathering of information about your life and how you view the world would be similar across who you may see. You will likely meet with the psychologist/psychiatrist for one or more interviews to discuss your experiences. Sometimes adults seeking a diagnosis arent showing very obvious signs that they are autistic as they have learned to mask them over the years.
A good psychologist or psychiatrist with a modern understanding of autism and a neurodiversity affirmative position will be able to still see autism. Meetings with your psychologist would involve talking about your life, your background and why you think you might be autistic. You will discuss information from your past that you think is relevant and try your best to describe how you experience the world.
Some psychologists will insist that a parent or other family member is involved in your assessment . But not all psychologists insist on this, and many will put your voice at the centre of the assessment. If you do not wish for a family member to be involved, you can look for a psychologist who does not require this.
