Mom Uses Junk Science To Treat Child With Autism Shares It Online
I think that given the complexity and the variability of the causes and the manifestations of autism, trying to come up with a cure is probably not the right approach, said autism researcher and psychologist Len Abbeduto, director of the University of California, Davis, MIND Institute in Sacramento.
An estimated 80 percent of autism cases involve genetic factors, and it tends to run in families, but there is no single autism gene, Abbeduto explained. In fact, research has shown that more than 100 genes, and maybe upwards of 1,000, may play a role. Researchers also suspect that environmental factors such as exposures to infectious agents, pesticides or other toxins in pregnancy may play a role.
Scientists are investing a lot of work into understanding the genes but were also realizing its a lot more complicated than anybody ever thought when they started out, psychologist Ann Wagner, national autism coordinator for the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services, said.
Its highly likely that there are different causes for different kinds of ASD.
We do know that its highly genetic, we just havent identified how particular kinds of genes might interact with each other or with other factors to cause autism spectrum disorder, Wagner said. Autism is such a heterogenous disorder, so its highly likely that there are different causes for different kinds of ASD.
Treatment For Autism Spectrum Disorder
The Drake Institute has successfully treated Autism spectrum disorders and other conditions with a biofeedback and neurofeedback-centered non-drug treatment program. Having helped reduce or eliminate symptoms for many disorders in thousands of patients, weve acquired an unparalleled level of knowledge and clinical expertise.
In 2013 the National Geographic Channel recognized the Drake Institute pioneering expertise in the treatment of Autism spectrum disorder by selecting Dr.David Velkoff, the medical director of the Drake Institute, to be the medical consultant for their special documentary on Autism.
Our non-drug treatment programs enable patients to reduce not only the core symptoms of Autism spectrum disorder but also frequently co-occurring symptoms of ADHD, anxiety, depression, auditory/language processing disorders, and learning disorders.
We have provided effective treatment to over 10,000 patients on the Autism spectrum, and as a medical clinic we are able to assess and treat each patient with a more comprehensive level of knowledge and experience. Our treatment process has integrated the practices of medicine, psychology, family therapy and neuropsychology along with neurosciences and computer sciences to provide a uniquely effective treatment for Autism spectrum disorder without drugs and their side effects.
An Effective And Natural Treatment Plan For Reversing Peripheral Neuropathy
In the past, medical treatments have only included drugs and surgical intervention. These approaches have not always considered all of the factors that contribute to neuropathy. Our program of a more holistic approach integrates several restorative therapies that target multiple factors contributing to neuropathy.
This is good news for people who suffer from peripheral neuropathy. Emerging therapies can provide relief without having to rely on medication or surgery, and if we can diagnose you early then we can control the condition and even reverse the tissue damage.

Increase Omega 3 Fats
Deficiencies in essential fats are common in people with autism. Research by Dr Gordon Bell at Stirling University has shown that some autistic children have an enzymatic defect that removes essential fats from brain cell membranes more quickly than it should. This means that an autistic child is likely to need a higher intake of essential fats than the average. And it has been found that supplementing EPA, which can slow the activity of the defective enzyme, has clinically improved behaviour, mood, imagination, spontaneous speech, sleep patterns and focus of autistic children.
Wheres the evidence? Search our evidence database and enter omegas and autism into the search field for a summary of studies that demonstrate the effect of essential fats on autism.
Side effects? Rarely causes loose stools in sensitive individuals if you start on too high a dose.
Contraindications with medication? Essential fats may have a blood-thinning effect and should not be mixed with blood thinning medication.
Treatment Trials For Autism Often Fail To Show Benefits
There are also documented cases of individuals whose symptoms have improved to such degree that they no longer meet the diagnostic criteria for autism.
On the other hand, there is at this point in time no definite, large, placebo-controlled double-blinded study that establishes beyond doubt that any single ONE approach could be an effective treatment for everyone affected by autism.
There are a few possible answers as to why this is the case, but one important one is the fact that the researchers are still not able to define what autism isor, perhaps more accurately, what autisms really are. When recruiting study participants for any one treatment trial for autism, it is therefore likely that many individuals will be included who have a different underlying pathophysiology, and different cluster of symptoms and impairments. Because of this the individuals who take part in the studies will have widely different responses to any single treatment, or a combination of treatments.
Even when a specific treatment appears to bring significant benefits to a small number of study participants, unless those positive effects can be shown across the whole mixed group they will be deemed statistically insignificant. The treatment will therefore be proclaimed ineffective for autism as a whole, even when the effects on autism symptoms in SOME individuals appear to be highly beneficialand life-changing.

Upper Cervical Chiropractic Helps Ease Fibromyalgia Symptoms
The above-mentioned patient sought out the care of an upper cervical chiropractor. Here are her results:
Her first re-evaluation revealed that her left leg sciatica and fibromyalgia had completely resolved. She was able to perform daily functions and consequently sleep comfortably and had more energy. She no longer took any prescription drugs. Also, her headaches and constant back pain were resolved by her second evaluation.
Even more, she reported no longer needing to use a wheelchair. Now she was able to do house and yard work. Most noteworthy, she could swim, stand for long periods of time, and walk distances without the aid of medication.
This shows how helpful seeking the care of an upper cervical chiropractor can be. But can fibromyalgia really be completely reversed?
The Search For A Cure Rests In Hope And Fear
When people are desperate for answers, someone will always come along to tell them what they want to hear. Unfortunately, those answers usually arent the right ones. A cursory search of the internet today will turn up any number of fraudulent cures for autism that make wild, unscientific, and frequently dangerous claims things like adopting a gluten-free diet killing off toxic gut bacteria increasing zinc intake going to entirely organic foods applying magnets to particular places on the head prayer and even spanking.
There is hope, however, but it comes from aspects of the disorder that remain mysterious and fundamentally outside our control.
Recently, research has been piling up that some autistic children effectively grow out of the disorder as they age. A 2015 study of 569 children living in the Bronx, New York, found that approximately 7 percent whose symptoms were resolved to a point where an ASD diagnosis was no longer appropriate.
Of course, some of the explanation for this apparent phenomena is simply the difficulty of diagnosing autism in very young children in the first place. Some percentage of those diagnoses will be false positives, indicating that otherwise neurotypical kids are autistic simply because their behavior is a little unusual.

Social And Communication Skills
Impairments in social skills present many challenges for individuals with ASD. Deficits in social skills may lead to problems with friendships, romantic relationships, daily living, and vocational success. One study that examined the outcomes of adults with ASD found that, compared to the general population, those with ASD were less likely to be married, but it is unclear whether this outcome was due to deficits in social skills or intellectual impairment, or some other reason.
Prior to 2013, deficits in social function and communication were considered two separate symptoms of autism. The current criteria for autism diagnosis require individuals to have deficits in three social skills: social-emotional reciprocity, nonverbal communication, and developing and sustaining relationships.
Some of the symptoms related to social reciprocity include:
- Lack of mutual sharing of interests: many children with autism prefer not to play or interact with others.
- Lack of awareness or understanding of other people’s thoughts or feelings: a child may get too close to peers without noticing that this makes them uncomfortable.
- Atypical behaviors for attention: a child may push a peer to gain attention before starting a conversation.
Symptoms related to relationships includes the following:
- Defects in developing, maintaining, and understanding relationships.
- Difficulties adjusting behavior to fit social contexts.

What Are The Current Treatments For Asd
Healthcare providers who treat ASD agree that starting supportive therapy as soon as possible is important.
According to Dr. Ashanti W. Woods, MD, a pediatrician at Mercy Medical Center, early intervention is proven to be associated with the best outcomes.
Younger children diagnosed with autism spectrum disorder will typically have their needs assessed and met using their states early intervention services, which many states refer to as an Individualized Family Service Plan , explained Woods.
The goal, he said, is to help toddlers communicate better, minimize anxiety in social settings, and lessen challenging behaviors. These services are usually offered up to the age of three years old.
When autism spectrum disorder ranges from mild to severe, Woods said most, if not all, treatment strategies will address and involve some sort of speech therapy, behavior therapy, and occupational therapy.
As children get older and enter school, Woods indicated many of them can benefit from specialized Individualized Education Plans , with the same goals of improving communication, behavior, socializing, and self-care.
Additionally, Woods explained that adolescent psychiatrists may also consider medicines to address conditions that are frequently seen in ASD including attention deficit hyperactivity disorder , oppositional defiance disorder , obsessive-compulsive disorder , or depression.

What is high blood pressure exactly? Its a common disease in which blood flows through blood vessels and arteries at higher than normal pressures.
Hypertension costs the U.S. $46 billion each year, which includes the cost of health care services, medications to treat high blood pressure symptoms and missed days of work a number thats expected to rise with the American Heart Association releasing new standards for what constitutes high blood pressure. Standard medical treatment for elevated blood pressure is to prescribe dangerous beta blockers, ACE inhibitor drugs and diuretics, along with convincing the patient to restrict salt in the diet. Although these things can help, they dont get to the root of the problem and can actually cause more problems. Weve been encouraged to fear salt when it comes to our health, but this recommendation of extreme salt reduction for high blood pressure symptoms remains controversial, questionable and even destructive for good reason.
Blood pressure is the force of blood pushing against the walls of the arteries as the heart pumps blood. High blood pressure happens when this force is too high. Scary, but true: Most people who have this condition display zero signs or high blood pressure symptoms, even when their blood pressure readings are at dangerously high levels.
Under the previous guidelines, blood pressure ranges include:
The new guidelines from the American Heart Association are as follows:
- Severe headaches
Symptoms Of Clogged Arteries
Chest Pain: Also known as angina, chest pain is common in those who have clogged arteries. This is mostly described as pressure or tightness in the chest and usually occurs on the middle or left side of the chest.
Angina is usually triggered by physical or emotional stress and can go away within minutes after stopping a stressful activity. For many people, especially women, the pain may be fleeting or sharp and felt in the neck, arm, or back.
Shortness of Breath: Patients with clogged arteries often express symptoms such as shortness of breath. If the heart is unable to pump enough blood to meet the bodys needs, shortness of breath can occur along with extreme fatigue with exertion.
Heart Attack: A heart attack will occur when an artery is completely blocked. The classic signs and symptoms of a heart attack include crushing pressure in the chest and pain in the shoulder or arm. This may also be accompanied by shortness of breath and sweating.
Women are more likely to express less typical symptoms of a heart attack such as neck or jaw pain. A heart attack can also occur without any apparent signs or symptoms.

Fibromyalgia The Cns And Pain Centralization
It was a common belief in the past that fibromyalgia is due to a problem in bones, joints, and muscles. In contrast, researchers revealed that the pain originates in the brain and spinal cord. However, this does not mean the pain is in the persons head. Instead, it confirms that fibromyalgia is a real condition resulting from the central sensitization of pain in the body. What is central sensitization?
Central sensitization or pain sensitization refers to the process that takes place within the body in an emergency. For example, if you inadvertently lean up against a hot stove, your body responds by ramping up pain levels to get you to move away from the source of danger as quickly as possible. The body usually returns to normal after the source of danger is removed. If the injury is very serious, a sense of shock may set in and actually dampen the pain. However, researchers believe that with fibromyalgia patients the central nervous system maintains this state of wind-up. As a result, they have an increased pain response from little to no stimuli. What the average person may detect as a mere touch, a fibromyalgia patient may sense as a severely painful event. Certainly, this can affect personal relationships among other aspects of life.
Can Autism Be Prevented
The number of children diagnosed with autism spectrum disorders is reaching epidemic proportions. Dr. Manny talks to one doctor who says some factors can be reversed and children can recover
According to the CDC, one in 88 children have been identified as having an autism spectrum disorder.
The statistic rates used to be one in 150 so how did we get these new numbers? Dr. Rober Melillo, co-founder of the Brain Balance Achievement Centers, spoke with Dr. Manny Alvarez, senior managing health editor for FoxNews.com, about the science behind autism, as well the facts and myths surrounding the condition.
Melillo said that while the current numbers are staggering, its quite possible the rates are even higher.
It’s an epidemic at this point, and we are seeing significant increases, which means that the only way you can explain it is through environmental factors, Melillo said. There is no such thing as a genetic epidemic it takes a lot longer for genes to cause this type of rise.
However, Melillo does believe that autism is often a result of environmental factors combined with genetic predisposition. The most potent lifestyle factors are diet and exercise and inflammation in the body.
One of the things that we looked at are things like pre-natal vitamins, Melillo said. Taking pre-natal vitamins three months before and for the first month of pregnancy lowers the risk of having a child with autism by 60 percent.
