Ensuring your child eats a healthy and balanced lunch that will give them the nutrients their body needs is one of the responsibilities of a parent.

A balanced lunch needs to have protein, fat, and fiber to help keep blood sugars from spiking and crashing, keep your child feeling full until the next snack or meal, and feed the body with building blocks for lots of energy.

A few examples of healthy lunch foods are:

  • Protein: Meat, Eggs, Nuts, Seeds, Beans/Legumes
  • Fat: Fatty Fish, Olive Oil, Eggs, Coconut Milk, Avocado
  • Fiber: Fruits, Vegetables, Beans/Legumes, Nuts, Seeds, Gluten-Free Whole Grains

    Food is also not always predictable. An apple may taste sweet one time or sour another, for example.

    Children quickly learn they cannot trust or expect fruit or vegetables to taste exactly the same every time. Ms Belsham believes this is one of the main reasons we often see autistic children preferring predictable foods, such as processed meats and packaged foods, and avoiding fruit and veggies.

    Studies have come back with varying results when measuring food selectivity in the autism community, ranging from 13 per cent in one study, to 87 per cent in another. The difference in rates of aversion is partly due to the lack of definition of this condition.

    Studies have found that in food selectivity its texture that causes the most problems, followed by aversion to appearance, taste, smell or temperature. Although theres no set definition of food selectivity, generally included are food refusal and/or a high intake of one specific food.

    Other features included in food selectivity definitions are a limited range of acceptable foods, excessive intake of a few foods, limited intake of certain food groups, not liking foods touching on the plate and eating only specific brands.

    There are currently no known herbs that combat the symptoms of autism. However, some herbal remedies help in increasing the effects of lifestyle changes that may contribute to the lessening of symptoms. Turmeric, for example, has excellent antibacterial and anti-inflammatory effects that could help cleanse the digestive system and prevent the absorption of harmful elements which aggravate symptoms. The bacteria Candida is one such element, which some believe to be greatly contributory to autisms onset and effects.

    Whole Grains And Legumes

    Fiber is a key element in a healthy microbiome, and whole grains and legumes are some of the best sources of fiber. Since grains tend to make up much of a childs diet, they are a great place to start in improving nutrition, especially if you have a picky eater. The key is to make sure you are using WHOLE grains, not refined. That means choosing brown rice, quinoa, and whole-grain bread, cereal, and crackers. Many packaged products that use the words whole grain on the label actually blend the whole grains with refined grains and starches, so choosing whole foods instead of packaged is the best way to ensure youre getting the entire grain with all the fiber and nutrients.

    Throughout each day, children should eat from all five major food groups, which include:

    • Meats and beans

    Each of these food groups provides a different set of vitamins, minerals, and macronutrients like carbohydrates, proteins and fats. Its OK if your child only eats a few foods in each food group, as long as those foods are consumed on a daily basis in a balanced way. The United States Department of Agriculture has created the My Plate educational resource to help guide you in balancing your familys diet. Following My Plate also helps you with appropriate portion sizes based on age.

    What to avoid

    It is important to limit snacking between scheduled meals and snacks. Grazing, or eating small amounts of food throughout the day, isnt healthy. At an identified meal or snack time, portion out the correct serving size and put it into an appropriate container, such as small bowl or baggie. Reducing grazing also means limiting access to sugar-sweetened beverages, such as juice and soda. Caloric drinks should only be offered as part of a meal. Limit juice to no more than 8 ounces a day, and avoid soda whenever possible.

    One issue that I know a lot of parents of autistic children are dealing with is a reliance on processed or packaged foods. I often get asked what parents can do to wean their autistic children off these kinds of foods.

    Most children, not just those with autism, thrive on routine and predictability. But for autistic children having familiarity in every aspect of their lives helps them to maintain control in a world that is otherwise unpredictable and chaotic. Packaged and processed foods help retain this sense of routine and familiarity.

    Frozen processed chicken nuggets for example are always the same the packaging is the same, the taste and smell is the same. Even the size of the nuggets will remain the same.

    Weaning children off these foods can be difficult but its not impossible. I have shared my recipe for healthier homemade Chicken Nuggets & Chips below and also some tips that you might find helpful.
