Your childs school district and/or clinician may perform a Functional Behavioral Assessment. This evaluation seeks to determine causes for specific, often challenging, behaviors. Based primarily on observations in various settings, strategic intervention are developed to address these behaviors. Other assessments may include interviews with parents and teachers and completing behavioral and sensory rating scales.
It is recommended that families, educators, and pediatricians track their childs progress over time. Regular assessments help guide treatment choices throughout the entire lifetime. What To Expect From Our Autism Quiz For Toddlers
Autism is not diagnosed through blood or imaging tests, rather it is observed over time through behavior and a toddlers developmental progress. Not meeting the basic developmental requirements of toddlers their age is typically what indicates autistic tendencies.
Autism, if approached properly, can be detected at a young age. The common early age for diagnosis is around 2 to 3 years old, though some toddlers as young as 18 months can be properly diagnosed. When it comes to autism, the earlier your toddler is diagnosed the better. This means you can take quick action in providing them with the treatment they need.

Screening And Diagnosis Of Autism Spectrum Disorder
Diagnosing autism spectrum disorder can be difficult because there is no medical test, like a blood test, to diagnose the disorder. Doctors look at the childs developmental history and behavior to make a diagnosis.
ASD can sometimes be detected at 18 months or younger. By age 2, a diagnosis by an experienced professional can be considered very reliable . As children with ASD become adolescents and young adults, they might have difficulties developing and maintaining friendships, communicating with peers and adults, or understanding what behaviors are expected in school or on the job. They may also come to the attention of healthcare providers because they have co-occurring conditions such as attention-deficit/hyperactivity disorder, obsessive compulsive disorder, anxiety or depression, or conduct disorder.

What To Do If Your Child Is Diagnosed
If your child receives an autism diagnosis, you might feel overwhelmed and have many questions racing through your mind: Will my child be OK? How will we cope? What does this mean for their future? Where do I even start?
Talk with your pediatrician about services that are available to help autistic kids develop and sharpen their communication, social, motor, and academic skills.

Autism is a spectrum disorder, which means that people can experience a wide range of symptoms and of varying severities. Signs And Symptoms Of Autism In Babies And Toddlers

Children with autism spectrum disorder have trouble picking up on subtle nonverbal cues and using body language. This makes the give-and-take of social interaction very difficult.

Signs Of Autism Meltdown
For some people with autism, sensory overload can become overwhelming. In these situations a person may have a meltdown. A change in routine can also precipitate a meltdown.
A meltdown is not a temper tantrum and can be experienced by someone with autism of any age. A meltdown should be managed by calming the person and addressing the cause of the distress.
Signs that a meltdown may be developing, sometimes known as the rumbling stage, include:

For example, an excessive interest in trains, the wheels on trucks, or strange dinosaur trivia is often very noticeable. A girl who doesnt play with trains, trucks, or dinosaurs might display less noticeable behaviors, like arranging or dressing dolls in a particular way.
High-functioning girls also have an easier time mimicking average social behaviors. Social skills may be more innate in girls, which can make impairments less noticeable.
Children Receive A Diagnosis For A Related Condition
Sensory issues and attention-deficit hyperactivity disorder are conditions that are often associated with autism. If a child presents with ADHD or sensory issues, the physician may stop at that diagnosis and treat the child for those issues instead of an autism diagnosis.

The ratio of boys to girls diagnosed with autism spectrum disorder is 4:1. However, there is some evidence that autism is going undiagnosed in girls, particularly those who are at the higher functioning end of the spectrum.

The main treatment for autism is called applied behavioral analysis . This is a behavioral program that breaks actions and behaviors down into small steps. It encourages positive behaviors and discourages negative behaviors. Other treatments include occupational therapy, sensory integration therapy, and strategies to improve communication, such as using pictures that children can point at to let caregivers know what they want.
Heres the thing: ABA and the other treatments are helpful for children with developmental problems, no matter what their cause. There is no downside to doing them even if the child ultimately is found to have a different problem or no problem at all. They are good for the child with autism, the child with a language disability, or a late bloomer. Yes, its hard for parents to hear a diagnosis of autism. But there is much reason for hope when it comes to autism, and we should never waste time when a child needs help.
