ASD has no cure. But there is hope through treatment. Many children can learn to communicate and interact. Healthcare providers and mental health experts have learned a lot about how to break through to these children.

Here are some things we know about children with an ASD:

  • They may not be able to understand your nonverbal communications. They may not react to your smile or frown.

  • They take things literally. You need to be careful to say exactly what you mean. If you hurry the child by saying “Step on it,” don’t be surprised if they ask what to step on.

  • They may only be able to handle one thought or idea at a time. Keep conversations focused and simple.

  • They may want to only talk about the one thing they are really interested in at a given time. And they may want to talk about it over and over again.

  • They may see things differently than you do. You may not even notice ordinary sounds, tastes, touches, smells, and sights. But these may be physically painful to the child.

These Are The 5 Steps You Use To Teach Your Child To Follow Instructions:

  • Collect some data
  • You need to look at where your child is now so that you can choose the right level of instructions to teach. I have attached the âFollowing Instruction Formâ that can be used for collecting this information.

    There is a hierarchy for learning to follow instructions. In this article, we will go as far as 2-step instructions:

    • One step at home e.g. âsit downâ âcome hereâ âgiveâ
    • One step familiar instruction in other environments
    • One step novel instruction at home. This means that you change a familiar instruction very slightly so that you know your child is listening and following the instruction, rather than rote learning an instruction e.g. If you tell your child to put their cup on the kitchen bench after a drink, make it a novel instruction by saying âPut your cup in the sinkâ
    • One step novel instruction in other environments
    • Two step instructions at home e.g. âGet your hat and put it in your bagâ
    • Two step familiar routines in other environments

    You will notice that each level of instruction is separated out into following the instructions âat homeâ and following the instructions âin other environmentsâ. It is important that children follow instructions with different people and in different environments. Ask other people and collect information about other environments.

    • âget your pack and give it to meâ

    Signs Of Asperger Syndrome

    People with Asperger syndrome are generally considered to be on the higher functioning end of the autism spectrum. It is still a form of autism and is a lifelong condition.

    Signs and symptoms that are typical of people with Asperger syndrome include:

    • Very narrow and highly focused interests
    • Great importance on rules and routines
    • High standard of language skills, potentially very formal in expression
    • Monotonous or repetitive speech
    • Making the same noise repeatedly
    • Scratching

    These behaviors provide the person with a form of sensory input that the person finds appealing or helpful. There are various reasons why someone could be engaging in self-stimulatory behavior:

    • They find it enjoyable
    • It provides something to focus on, thereby reducing the effects of other, nearby stimuli
    • It is soothing and helps with anxiety

    Other Signs Of Autism

    You may also have other signs, like:

    • not understanding social “rules”, such as not talking over people
    • avoiding eye contact
    • getting too close to other people, or getting very upset if someone touches or gets too close to you
    • noticing small details, patterns, smells or sounds that others do not
    • having a very keen interest in certain subjects or activities
    • liking to plan things carefully before doing them

    What Is Considered Mild Autism?

    Many students with autism can thrive in a structured environment, so establish a routine and keep it as consistent as possible. Adhering to daily schedules and allowing ample time for transitions can help with many students’ behavioral issues and frustrations.

    Instructional support is often needed within the classroom setting. Students with autism learn better with pictures and demonstrations. Limit long verbal instructions and provide visual cues and written instructions, when possible. Also limit distractions and use positive rewards for positive behaviors.

    Many people with autism have strong passions and deep interests. Getting to know your students’ likes and dislikes can help you understand what motivates them. Students with autism can participate in most activities that other kids and teens do, so provide encouragement to participate when appropriate.

    Signs And Symptoms Of Autism

    There are many signs and symptoms that could indicate a person has autism spectrum disorder. Not all adults or children with autism will have every symptom, and some adults and children without autism may display some of the same behaviors and symptoms.

    People with autism spectrum disorder often have difficulties with communication, and connecting emotionally and socially with others. They may also process sensory information, such as sounds and smells, differently from other people. These differences can underlie some of the behavioral signs of autism that people may display.

    When looking for early signs of autism spectrum disorder, there are developmental milestones that children are expected to reach by certain ages, such as babbling by four months old and being able to use simple sentences by two years old. If a child reaches these milestones later, or does not develop the skills at all, it may indicate a developmental disorder such as autism spectrum disorder.

    Autism can be diagnosed by age two, though symptoms may be apparent much earlier.

    Signs In Boys Vs Girls

    The symptoms of autism are generally the same for both boys and girls. However, because autism is diagnosed in boys far more often than girls , classic symptoms are often described in a skewed manor.

    For example, an excessive interest in trains, the wheels on trucks, or strange dinosaur trivia is often very noticeable. A girl who doesnt play with trains, trucks, or dinosaurs might display less noticeable behaviors, like arranging or dressing dolls in a particular way.

    High-functioning girls also have an easier time mimicking average social behaviors. Social skills may be more innate in girls, which can make impairments less noticeable.

    Signs Of Autism In Girls

    The ratio of boys to girls diagnosed with autism spectrum disorder is 4:1. However, there is some evidence that autism is going undiagnosed in girls, particularly those who are at the higher functioning end of the spectrum.

    There is discussion around whether girls and women with autism may display different symptoms to boys and men, and that the current diagnostic criteria may be biased towards boys and stereotypical male behavior.     • May mask lack of intuitive understanding of social situations by repeating role-plays seen in real life or film/television
    • May be able to make friends but find difficulty keeping them
  • Intense focus on particular topics differences in gender may be expressed as a focus on trains or dinosaurs for boys, and celebrities or animals for girls,
  • Fewer repetitive behaviors and gestures than boys, or may have different gestures than boys

    What Are The Signs Of Autism In A 5 Year Old

    Signs of autism in children

    Prenatal Factors That May Contribute To Autism

    Taking antidepressants during pregnancy, especially in the first 3 months.

    Nutritional deficiencies early in pregnancy, particularly not getting enough folic acid.

    Take a multivitamin. Taking 400 micrograms of folic acid daily helps prevent birth defects such as spina bifida. Its not clear whether this will also help reduce risk of autism, but taking the vitamins cant hurt.

    Ask about SSRIs. Women who are taking an SSRI should talk with a clinician about all the risks and benefits of these drugs. Untreated depression in a mother can also affect her childs well-being later on, so this is not a simple decision to make.

    Practice prenatal care. Eating nutritious food, trying to avoid infections, and seeing a clinician for regular check-ups can increase the chances of giving birth to a healthy child.
