Early detection critical to early interventions and improved outcomes, U of A researchers say.
Lonnie Zwaigenbaum conducts a study with a young patient. Zwaigenbaum led new research showing that autism spectrum disorder can be predicted in at-risk children as young as a year old, which could lead to earlier interventions and better outcomes.
Medical researchers reliably predicted autism spectrum disorder in a large sample of at-risk children by identifying and tracking early behavioural signs at 12 months of age, according to study findings published Dec. 25 in Child Development.
This research really reinforces what parents have been telling us for so many years, said principal investigator Lonnie Zwaigenbaum, pediatrician and director of the Autism Research Centre within the University of Albertas Faculty of Medicine & Dentistry.
Some of the earliest signs may be subtle but they are apparent quite early in lifefor many children even by the first birthday, said Zwaigenbaum, who holds the Stollery Childrens Hospital Foundation Chair in Autism Research and is a Stollery Science Lab Distinguished Researcher.
Zwaigenbaum said specialist care can be difficult to access and a diagnosis of autism spectrum disorder is often not confirmed until age four or five, which is why being able to observe the signs before age three is key to earlier interventions and better outcomes.

TUESDAY, Aug. 3, 2010 — Signs of autism may show up in babies as young as 1 month old, a new study shows.
But the tip-offs are not the usual red flags, such as a lack of eye contact or smiling, the researchers noted.
Instead, they found babies who needed neonatal intensive care and were later diagnosed with an autism spectrum disorder were more likely to have abnormal muscle tone and differences in their visual processing than babies who went on to develop normally after time in the neonatal intensive care unit .
The differences, which were subtle and probably not something parents would easily spot, were picked up by trained experts closely observing babies, said study co-author Ira Cohen, chair of the psychology department at the New York State Institute for Basic Research in Developmental Disabilities.
Still, “any parent concerned about the development of their child should have the child evaluated,” Cohen said.
Autism is a neurodevelopmental disorder characterized by problems with social interaction, verbal and nonverbal communication and restricted interests and behaviors.
If the study findings are borne out by future research, they might lead to earlier identification and treatment of autistic children, experts say.
Babies’ behavior and development was tested at 1 month old, 4 months and periodically until they were about 2.
