Thats why it is essential to work with clinicians who have experience diagnosing autism in adults. It is especially helpful if they have knowledge of any existing diagnoses, like ADHD, and have previously evaluated or counseled other women. Alignment Of Asd And Adhd Neurocognitive Endophenotypes With The Rdoc Matrix
A number of neurocognitive traits have been identified as areas of difficulty for children with ASD and ADHD. Some neurocognitive domains are associated with similar levels of impairment across ASD and ADHD, while others appear to differentiate between them. Although atypical neurocognitive profiles are frequently observed at a group level, not all individuals within a disorder show divergence across all behavioural and neurocognitive domains. This heterogeneity has hindered clinical translation of group-level findings to individuals . Snps Selection Genotyping And Quality Control
Tag SNP strategy was used to select the SNPs in SHANK2 and SHANK3 for genotyping. A cluster-based algorithm which clustered SNPs by r2 was used . The algorithm determined the pairwise r2 between all SNPs and clustered correlated SNPs with r2 over 0.8 into bins. Each tagSNP selected represented all the SNPs in the same bin. Fifteen tagSNPs for SHANK2 and eight tagSNPs for SHANK3 were, respectively, selected by a R2 algorithm among SNPs with minor allele frequency of at least 10% in Asians . Genotyping was performed using MassARRAY iPLEX platform . SNPs with MAF less than 5%, missing rates higher than 10%, Hardy-Weinberg Equilibrium p-values smaller than 0.1% or above 5% Mendel error rates were excluded. Altogether, three SNPs were excluded with one SNP in SHANK2 deviating from HWE distribution , one SNP in SHANK3 having a high missing rate , and one SNP in SHANK2 having a >5% Mendel error rate.

Background: Recent findings indicated a high comorbidity between attention-deficit/hyperactivity disorder and autism spectrum disorder , as well as shared genetic influences on them. The latter might contribute at least partly to the former clinical scenario. This study aimed at investigating whether SHANK genes were potential pleiotropic genes to the two said disorders, underlying their genetic overlap.
Methods: This study recruited 298 boys with ADHD , 134 boys with ASD, 109 boys with both ADHD and ASD, and 232 typically developing boys as community controls. They were aged between 6 and 11 years old.
SHANK2 could be considered a potential pleiotropic gene underlying the genetic overlap between ADHD and ASD. This might contribute partly to their high comorbidity in the afflicted children.

How Are They Different
Keep an eye on how your child pays attention. Those with autism struggle to focus on things that they don’t like, such as reading a book or doing a puzzle. An autistic child usually loves order and repetition, but one with ADHD may not, even if it helps them. A child with autism might want the same type of food at a favorite restaurant, for instance, or become overly attached to one toy or shirt. They can become upset when routines change. A child with ADHD doesn’t like doing the same thing again or for long times.
Exploring Shared Traits: Is Adhd Different From Autism
Autism spectrum disorder is similar to ADHD based on the shared symptomatology.
A common challenge linked to both conditions is social difficulties. For ADHD in particular, children diagnosed with this condition experience social deficits and difficulty forming relationships due to traits such as impulsivity, and intrusive behavior during conversation or play. Whereas for ASD, social difficulties are usually due to communication issues, inability to understand abstract thoughts or behavior, difficulty understanding body language, and difficulty making eye contact, etc.
According to Karla Pretorius, a Research Psychologist and Co-founder of AIMS Global, a person diagnosed with ADHD struggles to focus on tasks for long periods of time: They are distracted by a thought, which can lead to a shift of their focus immediately from one task to another within minutes. Karla highlights the difficulty that many individuals experience in an effort to sustain focus. To get back to the task at hand it requires someone diagnosed with ADHD to consciously be aware of their shift of attention and reasons for this, she adds.
So, while a person with ADHD might jump from one activity to the next, a person on the autism spectrum is likely to prefer routine and display repetitive behavior. Both of these traits can easily result in similar challenges.

When They Occur Together
There may be a reason why symptoms of ADHD and ASD can be difficult to distinguish from one another. Both can occur at the same time.
Not every child can be clearly diagnosed. A doctor may decide only one of the disorders is responsible for your childs symptoms. In other cases, children may have both conditions.
According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention , 14 percent of children with ADHD also have ASD. In one study from 2013, children with both conditions had more debilitating symptoms than children who didnt exhibit ASD traits.

Managing Autism And Adhd
Landa’s study is a landmark because now specialists can investigate the best ways to simultaneously treat ADHD and autism spectrum disorders.
