Do You Have Adult ADHD Inattentive Type? Here Are 9 Hidden Signs

A review published in March 2014 in Current Psychiatry Reports suggests teenagers and adults with ADHD have a higher risk of substance misuse, including alcohol, drugs, and cigarettes but we certainly need more data to understand the complex relationship.

A study published in August 2016 in Psychology of Addictive Behaviorsdid find adults with ADHD were more likely to become daily smokers.

“Nicotine is very effective for a lot of ADHD symptoms and it’s not uncommon for me to see someone for the first time after they quit smoking,” said Dr. Wetzel. That’s because they often start to have more problems with focus and concentration, Dr. Wetzel explained.

While not every person with ADHD has overt difficulty paying attention, a study published in December 2013 in The Journal of Pediatrics observed that people who had childhood attention problems had a higher risk of misusing tobacco, alcohol, cannabis, and/or cocaine later in life.

People may turn to these substances to deal with low self-esteem and feelings of failure that also can coincide with ADHD, as well as overlapping conditions like depression, anxiety, and bipolar disorder.

When To Seek Help

Like other mood disorders, if your inattentiveness or hyperactivity is disrupting your way of life and causing harm to your relationships, your healthcare provider can work with you on a variety of treatments. Most often, cognitive behavioral therapy paired with prescription medication can be the best course of action to helping you manage your systems and improve your focus. Your doctor may also advise an ADHD coach who can work with you to set up structures and coping mechanisms to help manage your symptoms.

The point is that an adult with ADHD must often have an external organizational system like calendars, reminders, timers and a network of people to help keep them on track, says Dr. Manos. If they dont, then theyre relying on what they keep in their heads to assist them and that information is at times highly inaccessible.

Being forthright about your diagnosis can also be helpful in some relationships after all, its sometimes easier to understand and relate to someone who says theyll be late to an event because they establish a clear and honest expectation than to create an upset due to an unfulfilled expectation from the start.

Whenever possible, you want to try and clean up your incompletions by doing the tasks you set out to finish, changing the angle of the task if you cant complete them or canceling the task completely, says Dr. Manos. It really comes down to setting up proper and predictable expectations for yourself and other people.

How Is Adhd Diagnosed

Healthcare providers use the guidelines in the American Psychiatric Associations Diagnostic and Statistical Manual, Fifth edition 1, to help diagnose ADHD. This diagnostic standard helps ensure that people are appropriately diagnosed and treated for ADHD. Using the same standard across communities can also help determine how many children have ADHD, and how public health is impacted by this condition.

Here are the criteria in shortened form. Please note that they are presented just for your information. Only trained healthcare providers can diagnose or treat ADHD.

Too often, the shame that we feel at failing to manage these unidentified symptoms is diagnosed as anxiety or a mood disorder the ADHD link is missed entirely.

Do More Women Have Inattentive Type Adhd Than Have Hyperactive

ADHD isnt gender-biased, but it often goes undiagnosed in girls. More women and girls have Inattentive ADHD than have Hyperactive-Impulsive ADHD. Young girls and women who struggle with inattentive ADHD symptoms are overshadowed by hyperactive boys, who demonstrate more stereotypical hyperactive ADHD behavior. Instead of detecting their symptoms as ADHD, medical professionals frequently mistake them for mood disorders. If you think you or your daughter may have ADHD symptoms, take our ADHD test for women and girls and share your results with a medical professional.

That said, Inattentive Type ADHD is not exclusive to girls. Many boys have this subtype of ADHD, though their symptoms may be similarly overlooked or misdiagnosed due to gender stereotypes.

  • Becoming easily distracted by low-priority activities or external events that others tend to ignore.
  • Having so many simultaneous thoughts that its difficult to follow just one.
  • Difficulty paying attention or focusing, such as when reading or listening to others.
  • Frequently daydreaming or zoning out without realizing it, even in the middle of a conversation.
  • Struggling to complete tasks, even ones that seem simple.
  • A tendency to overlook details, leading to errors or incomplete work.
  • Poor listening skills for example, having a hard time remembering conversations and following directions.
  • Getting quickly bored and seeking out new stimulating experiences.

Changing Behaviors As Therapy

Most psychologists think about ADHD as a characteristic that, like eye color or height, can’t be changed. Doctors can’t cure ADHD, just like they can’t double the length of your legs.6254a4d1642c605c54bf1cab17d50f1e

If someone had a hard time reaching a high shelf, would you tell them they just need to be taller? Of course not. But you could suggest they use a stepladder.

The good news is there are ways that people with ADHD can overcome the challenges this condition brings. Evidence supports two distinct kinds of treatments.

Behavioral therapy is typically implemented by parents and teachers working together. It includes setting clear goals and giving feedback on progress toward those goals, usually on a daily basis. Another feature is providing rewards or privileges when people with ADHD meet their goals.

Hyperfocusing On The Same Task For Hours

If you have ADHD, starting tasks can be a grind especially tasks you find daunting or believe will be time-consuming but once you get started, you might find yourself so absorbed by what youre doing that other important tasks end up neglected as a result.

Hyperfocus is a symptom that can easily be missed because it looks like the person is only motivated to do certain activities, OShea said. Its sometimes mistaken as selfishness and overzealousness.

Difficulty switching gears is thought to be caused by low dopamine levels in the brain: The more engrossed you are in a task, the greater the dopamine boost. Its similar to being in the zone, only in this context, it feels like youre trapped there.

Hyperfocus at its worst can look like writing and rewriting your response to a simple email and being unable to transition to a new task or missing an important event because youre unable to pull yourself away from a work project, Louk said.

You Lose Things All The Time

Is losing your cell phone, wallet, or keys part of your daily routine? People with ADHD frequently misplace common items.

Dr. Wetzel describes ADHD as an underpowered state of consciousness.

If you set down your keys and youre not really paying attention, your brain doesnt lay down a memory of the event. Its kind of like it never happened, he says.

Symptoms Of Adhd In Teenagers

Pin on ADHD

As children with ADHD get older, the symptoms they experience may change. In some cases, certain symptoms seen in childhood may become less problematic in adolescence, while new symptoms can arise amidst the changing responsibilities that accompany growing older.

In adolescents and teenagers with ADHD, other symptoms that may appear can include:

  • difficulty focusing on schoolwork or other work
  • frequently making mistakes while doing work
  • trouble finishing tasks, especially schoolwork or chores
  • trouble with task organization and time management
  • frequently forgetting things or losing personal items
  • frequently avoiding mentally taxing tasks
  • experiencing increased frustration and emotional sensitivity
  • trouble navigating social and familial relationships
  • increased conflict with parents due to ADHD symptoms affecting the home life

Its important to understand that while these symptoms of inattentiveness, hyperactivity, and impulsivity can sometimes cause adolescents and teenagers with this condition to appear immature, they are simply a part of ADHD and have nothing to do with a childs maturity level.

Although most people with ADHD receive a diagnosis during childhood, sometimes the signs and symptoms of this condition are overlooked or misinterpreted.

But as long as the symptoms of ADHD have been present for that individual before , they can still receive a diagnosis in adulthood.

research suggests that ADHD is roughly four times as prevalent in males as it is in females.
