Three: Make A Monthly Budget And Use Visuals
Each month, create a budget in the form of a checklist. Once a high-priority transaction has been made, check it off. Once spending is complete for that month, compare the planned amount vs what was actually spent. For example, you may have budgeted $50 for groceries during week one, but the actual amount spent was $67. Complete this step for each item on your checklist to see if there are any problem areas that really stand out.
Tip: If possible, use visuals to better communicate. For example, pie charts can be helpful. A budget can also be created using a pyramid with different layers (i.e. essential items like rent, food, transportation may be one layer, whereas non-essential items like eating out can be represented as another.

Money management is an area of concern for millions across the United States and the globe. Theres no denying that money management and financial planning are skills. However, for individuals with autism, these skills are often much harder to learn than they are for the general population and its not due to a lack of understanding.
As reported in one key study, after interviewing youth with autism , it was found that the majority not only recognized that financial understanding is an essential component of being an independent adult, but that they also felt frustrated with their money management skillset. Another study found that money is a significant barrier and source of anxiety among individuals with autism.
Although each case is unique, many people with autism tend to spend money on things they want, like video games, movies, or anything else that they enjoy collecting. If they are comfortable, they may also spend a lot of money eating out, leaving little money for important things, like rent and bills.
When it comes to budgeting, bank accounts, and saving, it can all be a bit overwhelming especially if someone with autism gets into debt. That is why its imperative that financial support for adults with autism is available.
What Do I Need To Do To Get The Disability Allowance
You must be caring for the child who has the disability. The Disability Allowance requires your doctor to sign an application form. You will need to send in receipts for your ongoing costs, with your application, and then every year after that.
Ask your healthcare worker for a form.

Centrelink Initiative: Health Care Card
When you receive the Carer Allowance, your child will be issued with a Health Care Card. It entitles your child to concession rates for prescription medicines and other concessions like discounted public transport for some cardholders, bulk billing by selected doctors and higher refunds through the Medicare Safety Net.
Better Access To Mental Health
The Better Access to Mental Health Plan provides you or your child with up to 10 sessions per year with mental health professionals like psychologists, mental health occupational therapists and some social workers using the Medicare rebate. This referral can be accessed through your GP.
Group sessions such as a social skills group or emotion regulation groups can also be claimed under this plan, but you will need to check whether Medicare covers them first.

Helping Children With Autism Treatment Plan
Once your child has been diagnosed with autism, the Helping Children with Autism treatment plan can provide you with Medicare rebates for up to 20 sessions with therapists like psychologists, speech pathologists and occupational therapists.
There is also a HCWA assessment plan with can be used before or after diagnosis for assessment sessions with speech therapists, occupational therapists and psychologists.
To be eligible, your childs treatment plan must be in place before their 13th birthday, and the sessions must be used before they turn 15. This referral can be made through a paediatrician or psychiatrist.

You do not have to talk to others in online groups, but it can be helpful to look at what they’re saying.
A good place to start is the groups run by autism charities. But bear in mind the NHS does not monitor these sites.

Child Tax Credit And Working Tax Credit
Tax Credits can be paid to parents of children and to people who are working.
If DLA is awarded for your child, you can get additional amounts of Child Tax Credits. To claim Tax Credits, call the Tax Credits Helpline on 0345 300 3900.
Child Tax Credits and Working Tax Credits are being replaced by Universal Credit.

How Do I Apply For Dla
First you need to get hold of the form:
The form includes the information booklet which you absolutely need to read. Forms this big can be really daunting but the information booklet really does help. Personally I found it easier to print out a copy and write out a draft first. Use the Information booklet as your guide to complete the form.
I would recommend having all your relevant reports, letters and documents about your child to hand for reference. For example speech and language reports and/or a diagnosis letter. You are likely to need names, dates and addresses from them when completing the form. They may also help you with things to identify in the form.
If you havent already got a file with all your childs reports this might be a good time to get it all organised. I currently have two lever arch files full of letters, reports and forms and my son is only four.

Applying For Dla For A Child With Autism
Are you thinking about or do you need to apply for Disability Living Allowance for your child? It is a mammoth form and a very daunting task. No one wants to list out everything that their child struggles with on a government form.
When my son was first diagnosed as autistic we were told to apply for DLA. If Im honest I was very uncomfortable with this. Why was I uncomfortable? Well I thought I was doing that same as most parents with young children. Although some things were difficult to manage, all toddlers are difficult right? I now realise that this benefit is there to support people with additional needs and we do have costs and needs over and above my sons peers.
I used to work in a government agency so I have tons of experience with government forms. This was probably the hardest form I have ever completed because it is totally different to fill in a form all about your own child. Its really difficult looking at your child in comparison to their peers when they have a disability. What Are My Rights If I Disagree With A Work And Income Decision
If you don’t understand a decision Work and Income has made, talk to them about it. If you disagree with certain decisions, you have the right to apply for a formal review. You need to make an application for review within 3 months of the decision. You can use the forms on the Work and Income website, or write to them by letter, email or fax. If you can’t do this within 3 months, talk to Work and Income. If you have a good reason, they may still consider your application for review.

Firstly about your childs illness or disability. What is the diagnosis? Autistic Spectrum Disorder .
Treatments might include:
- occupational therapy
- play therapy
List anyone who you are working with it could be charities or your local childrens centre.
Other illnesses affecting your child that require treatment also need to be listed. For example, eczema, epilepsy and asthma.
Does your child require aids? This is not just about physical aids , it is any aids required to support your child. For example my son needs picture exchange cards to communicate and visual aids to support understanding.
When answering the questions be honest. If your child is unpredictable say that. Identify the challenges you do have . Highlight the support they need from you that is additional compared to peers.

If you do not have a diagnosis you can still apply but will need to provide evidence relating to the childs needs again in comparison to children the same age.

Yes. Again the requirement will be evidence to show the child has additional needs compared to their peers.
Finding The Program Best Suited To My Childs Needs
Each person with ASD is unique and has different needs. Their intervention program should:
- build upon strengths and abilities
- be used at home, school and in the community
- bring together different therapies and interventions that work for that person
- reduce or eliminate behaviours that get in the way of learning and adjustment
A personalized program should also include the familys needs. The chances for success rise when families and caregivers are part of the intervention.
