How Autism Is Diagnosed

Real Question: What Age Can Child be Diagnosed with Autism?

There is no simple medical test for autism, and there are many disorders that look similar to autism . Because of this, diagnosis is based on a combination of parent interviews, non-medical tests, observation, and professional judgment. Evaluators will check on your child’s developmental stage, language acquisition, imitative skills, and cognitive skills. That’s why experience, in addition to training, can be critical in providing a meaningful diagnosis.

Screening And Diagnosis Of Autism Spectrum Disorder

Diagnosing autism spectrum disorder can be difficult because there is no medical test, like a blood test, to diagnose the disorder. Doctors look at the childs developmental history and behavior to make a diagnosis.

ASD can sometimes be detected at 18 months or younger. By age 2, a diagnosis by an experienced professional can be considered very reliable . However, many children do not receive a final diagnosis until much older. Some people are not diagnosed until they are adolescents or adults. This delay means that children with ASD might not get the early help they need.

Early signs of ASD can include, but are not limited to

  • Avoiding eye contact,
  • Having little interest in other children or caretakers,
  • Limited display of language , or
  • Getting upset by minor changes in routine.

CDCs Learn the Signs. Act Early. program provides free resources to help families monitor developmental milestones and recognize signs of developmental concerns, including ASD.

As children with ASD become adolescents and young adults, they might have difficulties developing and maintaining friendships, communicating with peers and adults, or understanding what behaviors are expected in school or on the job. They may also come to the attention of healthcare providers because they have co-occurring conditions such as attention-deficit/hyperactivity disorder, obsessive compulsive disorder, anxiety or depression, or conduct disorder.

Which Treatment Strategies May Help Children With Autism

2020 Autism Statistics: New Recent Study Shows Increase

The main treatment for autism is called applied behavioral analysis . This is a behavioral program that breaks actions and behaviors down into small steps. It encourages positive behaviors and discourages negative behaviors. Other treatments include occupational therapy, sensory integration therapy, and strategies to improve communication, such as using pictures that children can point at to let caregivers know what they want.

Heres the thing: ABA and the other treatments are helpful for children with developmental problems, no matter what their cause. There is no downside to doing them even if the child ultimately is found to have a different problem or no problem at all. They are good for the child with autism, the child with a language disability, or a late bloomer. Yes, its hard for parents to hear a diagnosis of autism. But there is much reason for hope when it comes to autism, and we should never waste time when a child needs help.

The CDCs Act Early campaign has a whole host of resources to help parents and caregivers know if a child is developing normally, or if there might be a problem. If you think there is a problem, ask for help. You have nothing to lose, and everything to gain.

Early Signs Of Autism In Babies

A lifelong condition, autism spectrum disorder can be diagnosed before the child turns two. Early diagnosis can make an enormous difference in their quality of life later on.

There are certain early signs that can be observed in a newborn if your child is on the spectrum. You can detect the first signs in your infant really early in their life.

Data Highlight Gaps In Autism Treatment

In the study, 12% of kids with autism spectrum disorder didn’t receive any of the suggested services. Less than half received the kind of behavioral therapies that are believed to be most helpful.

“There are many reasons children with autism are not receiving the interventions they need, including lack of insurance coverage and inadequate numbers of trained professionals,” Dawson says. “It is critical that we address the barriers that are preventing children from receiving early intervention. “

Daniel L. Coury, MD, agrees. He is a professor of clinical pediatrics and psychiatry at Ohio State University and Nationwide Children’s Hospital in Columbus, Ohio. He says that doctors need to do a better job of identifying autism earlier and getting these children into services at younger ages.

“If we can get more physicians to do that, it would be a start,” he says. This is not going to pick up every child, as those more mildly affected may not be identified until their school years.

Amy Keefer, PhD, is a clinical psychologist in the Kennedy Krieger Institute’s Center for Autism and Related Disorders in Baltimore, Md. She says that parents need to advocate for their children.

“Be involved with practitioners who are experts in autism at the first concern, and if a diagnosis isn’t given, ongoing monitoring, assessment, and checking in can help guide parents through the developmental stages,” she says.

Early Signs Of Autism Spectrum Disorder

Studies have shown that autism can be diagnosed as early as 14 months. It typically appears in the early ages of an individual.

This means that the infants first year is crucial in terms of the diagnosis of the disorder.

Many children with autism spectrum disorder show developmental differences. This can especially be seen in their social and language skills. There are certain developmental milestones babies hit while they are growing up.

Parents and caregivers should observe their childrens behaviors so as to be able to catch the disorder early on.

The 10 early signs of Autism Spectrum Disorder in children can be as follows:

  • Little to no eye contact during infancy,
  • No babbling,
  • Not expressing emotions,
  • Not seeming attached to parents.

Subtle differences caused by autism may appear before the childs first birthday. These differences will be visible in childrens interaction with their surroundings.

When 2-months old, babies generally begin to smile at people, coo, and are able to pay attention to faces. This may not be the case for children with autism spectrum disorder. By 6 months, if a baby

  • doesnt smile,
  • doesnt smile as big,
  • is not showing any other warm, joyful, and engaging expressions

It may be a sign of autism spectrum disorder.

By 9 months, children with ASD:

  • make limited or no eye contact with anyone
  • dont share sounds,
  • dont smile back-and-forth with parents.

Before their first birthday, babies on the autism spectrum,

Rarely Responds To Their Name Of Other Bids

Babies are tuned to listen to your voice when you call their name, they respond by looking toward you.

Babies readily respond to other social bids, like:

  • come here with your arms reaching out
  • wave bye-bye as youre leaving
  • touch your nose
  • or look where youre pointing

Some children with autism dont respond by looking where youre pointing but instead look at your hand.

If your baby rarely responds to their name or other bids for social interaction, this can be an early sign of autism.

What Are The 3 Main Symptoms Of Autism

  • What Are the 3 Main Symptoms of Autism? Center
  • Autism or autistic spectrum disorder can manifest as different symptoms in different children. The average age of diagnosis is 2 years, though some children may be detected at around the age of 5 years.

The symptoms to look out for in children for suspected autism are:

    • Delayed milestones
    • A socially awkward child
    • The child who has trouble with verbal and nonverbal communication

Delayed Milestones: Every child starts cooing, rolling over, babbling, smiling, pointing, and sitting up at an expected age. These are called milestones. Though every child grows at their own pace, you must visit the pediatrician if:

    • The child does not smile by the age of 6 months
    • The child has no facial expressions by the age of 9 months
    • The child does not make cooing noises or babble by the age of 12 months
    • No pointing or waving by the age of 12 months
    • The child does not speak by the age of 16 months

Signs of social awkwardness: You must be concerned if your child

    • Avoids eye contact while you feed him
    • Prefers to play alone
    • Does not respond to their name
    • Does not like being touched
    • Prefers fixed routines and even a minor change may upset them greatly
    • Has trouble understanding feelings or talking about them

Problems with verbal and nonverbal communication:

    • Echolalia: They keep repeating words over and over
    • They talk in a flat tone, devoid of expressions
    • They do not understand emotions in a conversation
    • Have difficulty communicating what they want

    Age Limit For Autism Development

Older children, teens, and adults do not develop autism. In fact, to qualify for an autism spectrum diagnosis, you must have symptoms that appear during early childhood .

Thus, if you know an adult or older child who has suddenly, out of the blue, developed behavioral or social communication issues, you are not seeing someone who has acquired autism after a period of normal development.

People who appear to suddenly behave in an “autistic” manner may have developed any one of a number of other mental health issues, some of which do most commonly appear in early adulthood.

Autism-like behaviors may result from a wide range of disorders from social phobia to generalized anxiety to obsessive-compulsive disorder. These are serious disorders that have a significant impact on an individuals’ ability to function effectively, make or keep friends, or hold a job, and they should be treated. But they are not autism.

    Unusual Behaviors Or Interests

    Researchers devise a more

Children with autism may also act strangely. They may have different interests or behaviors, including:

    • Obsessive interest in certain objects or items
    • Being more interested in objects than people
    • Strong reactions to sensations like sounds, smells, tastes or textures
    • Getting upset by changes to their routine or environment
    • Repetitive movements like flapping their hands or rocking back and forth

Dr. Evans says many autistic children may also show signs of anxiety, especially when faced with new situations. An autistic child just wants to do the same thing, says Dr. Evans. He is just overwhelmed by new things. Anxiety gets worse if you stress out the person with autism.

How To Begin A Diagnosis Process

Adults who suspect they or a loved one might be autistic can do a self-assessment test for adults. A person can find these tests online. While they cannot give a diagnosis, the tests are a good starting point.

A person seeking a diagnosis can take the results of such a test to a primary care doctor who will try to determine whether ASD may be present by:

    • enquiring about the symptoms, both current and during childhood
    • observing and interacting with the person
    • speaking to a loved one
    • checking for other physical or mental health conditions that may be causing symptoms

If no underlying physical condition can explain the symptoms, the doctor may refer the person to a psychiatrist or a psychologist to make an ASD diagnosis.

If symptoms are not present in childhood but begin in adolescence or adulthood, this may indicate a cognitive or mental health condition other than ASD.

It may be difficult to find a specialist who can diagnose ASD in adults. Individuals who would like a diagnosis for themselves or a loved one may need to do research to find a provider with experience diagnosing autistic adults.

Another option is to speak to a developmental pediatrician or child psychiatrist who is willing to see adult clients.

    What Is Autism Spectrum Disorder

Autism spectrum disorder refers to a group of complex neurodevelopment disorders characterized by repetitive and characteristic patterns of behavior and difficulties with social communication and interaction. The symptoms are present from early childhood and affect daily functioning.

The term spectrum refers to the wide range of symptoms, skills, and levels of disability in functioning that can occur in people with ASD. Some children and adults with ASD are fully able to perform all activities of daily living while others require substantial support to perform basic activities. The Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders includes Asperger syndrome, childhood disintegrative disorder, and pervasive developmental disorders not otherwise specified as part of ASD rather than as separate disorders. A diagnosis of ASD includes an assessment of intellectual disability and language impairment.

ASD occurs in every racial and ethnic group, and across all socioeconomic levels. However, boys are significantly more likely to develop ASD than girls. The latest analysis from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention estimates that 1 in 68 children has ASD.

    Diagnosis Of Other Co

Sometimes autism comes with other conditions. These are called co-occurring conditions.

If children have signs or characteristics that meet the criteria for other conditions, theyll be diagnosed as having two or more conditions for example, autism spectrum disorder and attention deficit hyperactivity disorder or intellectual disability.

You may ask your childs healthcare provider to periodically check your child for signs of autism with a developmental screening test. A screening test alone will not result in a diagnosis but can indicate if your child should see a specialist. A developmental pediatrician, child psychologist or psychiatrist, pediatric neurologist, speech-language pathologist, occupational therapist, or other specialist can conduct a formal developmental evaluation.

Signs Of Autism In Young Children

Symptoms of autism spectrum disorder are usually clear by two or three years old. The range of behaviors and skills covered here may become apparent between two years old and five years old.

Some signs that a child has autism spectrum disorder may include:

    • Not expressing emotion or only a limited range of emotions
    • Difficulty interpreting different emotions in others
    • Not seeming attached to parents
    • Lacking interest in playing social games or the company of other children
    • Interest in playing with one particular toy or object
    • Echolalia, repeating other peopleââ¬â¢s words or phrases
    • Repeating own words over and over
    • Using formal language and expressions, rather than the slang of their peers
    • Not developing language skills at all
    • Difficulty toilet training
    • Challenging behaviour, such as banging head on wall or picking at skin
    • Engages in behavior such as flapping hands, rocking or twirling

Children with autism spectrum disorder have difficulty interpreting what other people are thinking and feeling, and often miss social cues. A child with autism may not be able to tell the difference between an adult who says ââ¬Åcome hereââ¬ï¿½ while happy and smiling, and an adult who says ââ¬Åcome hereââ¬ï¿½ while angry and frowning. This can be confusing and creates the impression the child is not connecting with people.

    Signs Of Asperger Syndrome

People with Asperger syndrome are generally considered to be on the higher functioning end of the autism spectrum. It is still a form of autism and is a lifelong condition.

Signs and symptoms that are typical of people with Asperger syndrome include:

    • Very narrow and highly focused interests
    • Great importance on rules and routines
    • High standard of language skills, potentially very formal in expression
    • Monotonous or repetitive speech
    • Making the same noise repeatedly
    • Scratching

These behaviors provide the person with a form of sensory input that the person finds appealing or helpful. There are various reasons why someone could be engaging in self-stimulatory behavior:

    • They find it enjoyable
    • It provides something to focus on, thereby reducing the effects of other, nearby stimuli
    • It is soothing and helps with anxiety

How Parents Can Spot The Warning Signs

As a parent, youre in the best position to spot the earliest warning signs of autism. You know your child better than anyone and observe behaviors and quirks that a pediatrician, in a quick fifteen-minute visit, might not have the chance to see. Your childs pediatrician can be a valuable partner, but dont discount the importance of your own observations and experience. The key is to educate yourself so you know whats typical and whats not.

Monitor your childs development. Autism involves a variety of developmental delays, so keeping a close eye on whenor ifyour child is hitting the key social, emotional, and cognitive milestones is an effective way to spot the problem early on. While developmental delays dont automatically point to autism, they may indicate a heightened risk.

Take action if youre concerned. Every child develops at a different pace, so you dont need to panic if your child is a little late to talk or walk. When it comes to healthy development, theres a wide range of typical. But if your child is not meeting the milestones for his or her age, or you suspect a problem, share your concerns with your childs doctor immediately. Dont wait.
