A lot of lifes successes and achievements are pegged on your ability to perceive the passage of time and use it productively. Unfortunately, this is easier said than done for people with ADHD and time blindness. The effects of this condition can make it nearly impossible to realize time moving as other people do.
The worst bit is there is currently no treatment procedure for people with time blindness. However, science and technology are continually advancing, and research in the area shows some promising results. For the time being, these coping strategies can help you effectively manage time blindness, improve your response to daily activities, and achieve your life goals.

How Does Time Agnosia Feel In Adhd
Time Agnosia feels like you have too many things to do and you cant decide what to pick first. As a result of which you lose track of time and find it very difficult to complete tasks on time. Most tasks are left half done because in the middle of doing one task you feel like the other is more important.
Let me explain it to you with the help of an example you go to a perfume store and you are fascinated by so many different scents to choose from. After a few minutes you are frustrated because you dont know which one is better and you cant seem to find that one smell you were looking for in the first place.
Now, that feeling is similar to how time blindness feels!

Time Blindness And The Adhd Tax
“ADHD is, at its heart, a blindness to time or…to be exact, it is a near-sightedness to the future,” said Russell Barkley, Phd, clinical professor of psychiatry at the VCU Medical Center in Richmond, VA, at a talk he gave for the CADDAC in 2009. “Just as people who are nearsighted can only read things close at hand,” Dr. Barkley continued, “people with ADHD can only deal with things near in time.”
I spoke to Ari Tuckman, Psyd, in West Chester, PA, who concurs with Barkley’s definitionand says that ADHD folks’ time blindness also contributes to our frequent hyperfocus: “Good attention regulation is choosing the right thing moment by moment,” says Dr. Tuckman. He describes distractibility as shifting when you should have stuck, whereas “hyperfocus is the oppositeyou stick when you should shift. Hyperfocus looks like awesome attention, but it’s notbecause what it is is losing track of time.”
All of these aspects of time blindness can lead to the proclivity of ADHD folks towards debti.e., a hyper-focus on the present moment only, along with an “I’ll spend now and pay later” mentality in which “later” never arrives.
This is an excellent way to describe what has always felt, to me, like an inability to grasp what time really means in a way that translates to successful actions. For example, as I’m writing these words, I know I should stop working in time to fire off a few emails, but I can’t be sure that I will stopor even gauge how long in advance I should do so.

Design Your Day Backward
Dr. Saline suggests planning your day backward from a scheduled activity or goal.
Say you have an in-person meeting at 1 p.m. and it takes you 15 minutes to get there. At 12:30 p.m., youll need to leave your house. At noon, youll probably need to eat. At 11:45 a.m., you may want to heat up your leftovers. At 11:15 a.m., youll need to dress for primetime, and so on. Your plan ends where your day begins at your wake-up time.
This method makes future events, including distant future events, feel more concrete.
Neurotypicals Struggle To Understand Time Blindness
Though the name and the symptoms clearly indicate how serious time blindness is, it is a difficult concept to convey to someone who is neurotypical.
To gauge time seems effortless to them, almost like breathing. The idea that someone actually doesnt know that dinner is burning and that isnt a one-off occurrence but something that cannot be fixed by being more careful is foreign to them.
If youve ever tried to explain time blindness to someone who doesnt have it, you already know how skeptical they can be. They will listen and eye you suspiciously. You can tell theyre trying to decide if you are serious or drawing a rather long bow at their expense.
Ironically, after a period of time observing an ADHD person and seeing the consequences of time blindness, they usually believe there is a problem. Whether or not theyll believe it isnt caused by some irresponsibility on our part is another story, but they will absolutely believe it exists.

Estimate Time for Tasks
Quick Tips: Estimate how long it will take to complete a task. Now double or triple the amount of time for that task, and plan for the double/triple time by blocking it in your calendar. Experiment with estimates vs. actual times and compare. Record estimates and actual times to perform daily tasks and compare. Make a list of tasks such as brushing teeth, bathing, getting dressed, emptying the dishwasher, taking out the trash, etc. Make sure you include tasks and chores you like and dont like, during different times of day. Notice what you find. Resist the one more thing syndrome. Usually, this practice results in stress and unreliability. Make sure you allocate time for transitions. Transitions include time for gathering materials into your backpack, purse, or briefcase, getting out the door to the car or public transportation, and wait time for traffic and trains or busses. When you get used to the same routines, your brain gets bored and doesnt look forward to monotonous events. For instance, if you start exercising and set a particular time to work out, youll likely not be looking forward to doing the same time again after a while.
To fix this, change the time you work out or the exercise routines. This excitement will trigger your mind to look forward to the change.

Music Playlists Or Television
In a similar vein to the previous strategy, a couple people mentioned that they have playlists for daily routines or as a means of estimating how much time has passed. A few others mentioned something similar with television shows. While thereâs an obvious potential for distraction with this strategy, the additional stimulation can be really useful for getting started with tasks or making uninteresting tasks more interesting as well.
Playlists have the added benefit of being wide ranging and very customizable. If you need 5 minutes and 5 seconds for one aspect of your routine, but only 3 minutes and 22 seconds for another, you can do that. If you need something more stimulating for one part, and something less stimulating for the next, you can do that too. This variability and customizability makes this a great option if you have the time to set it up and you can balance the stimulation with the potential for distraction.
How Time Blindness Manifests Itself When You Have Adhd Or Neurodiversity
Those with neurodiversity often have trouble with what is called time blindness. This means that they have difficulty estimating or keeping track of time. They may underestimate how much time has passed, how long a task will take, or how much time is left before an event.

Time Blindness Isn’t The Disadvantage We Think It Is
It’s frustrating to constantly cycle between states of panic, confusion, and disorientation because our lives are passing by at speeds rivaling the speed of light. Thankfully, time blindness isn’t a life-threatening, chronic condition. In fact, time blindness has less to do with how we, as individuals, function in the world and much more to do with how the world has established systems that work against us.
We’re held to the same schedules as everyone, working, typically, from nine to five, working our schedules around meetings that might interrupt a productive bout of hyperfocus, adhering our neurodivergent brains to a neurotypical world. It’s not that we can’t get things done or that we can’t be productive, high-functioning members of society it’s that our society frequently fails to give us the proper resources to succeed.
Many people with ADHD are aware of their current state, whether it’s a hyperactive do-all-the-things state or an inattentive I-just-want-to-chill state. But because we’re accustomed to our natural ebbs and flows, we know how to work with them and achieve the maximum benefits. Problems, really, only arise when we have to conform to what’s considered “normal.”
I hate early afternoons because I feel like I should have been working already by that point, but the truth is that I tend to do my best work in the evening, and I tend to be able to relax the most in the morning.
