Social Security Disability Insurance
Social Security Disability Insurance is another financial benefit through Social Security. This payment is available for adults who have a disability that began prior to age 22. SSDI can be considered a childs benefit because it is paid on a parents Social Security earnings record.
For a disabled adult to become entitled to this child benefit, one of his or her parents:
- Must be receiving Social Security retirement or disability benefits or
- Must have died and have worked enough to qualify for Social Security.
These benefits also are payable to an adult if he or she is disabled at age 18, and if they received dependents benefits on a parents Social Security earnings record prior to age 18. We make the disability determination using the disability rules for adults. SSDI disabled adult child benefits continue as long as the individual remains disabled. Your child doesnt need to have worked to get these benefits.

Grants For Families Living With Autism
Raising a child with autism spectrum disorder can be very expensive. The child may need therapy for speech or social skills, or a specialized summer camp program you might also decide the child in your care would do best in a private school. It is estimated that the lifetime cost for a person with autism averages between $1.4 million and $2.4 million, depending on if the person has an intellectual disability.
Fortunately, grants and scholarships are available for families to offset the financial challenges that come with having a child or other family member with autism. They tend to be very competitive, and many will only pay for specific expenses, usually billed directly to the provider. However, a growing number of foundations are making autism a priority for non-profit grants, which means local organizations that serve families have a better chance of receiving funds than ever before.
Here are the basics about five notable national and regional organizations that provide grants for families who have a child with autism.
Providing Grants For Families Impacted By Autism
The goal of Autism Care Today is to help facilitate treatment by providing the necessary resources including funding, information and referrals to individuals with Autism Spectrum Disorders and their families.
Their mission is to fund effective treatments, assessments and needed life supports. Typical grants awarded range between $100 $5,000. While they have not set an income level cap, incomes below $100,000 per year are reviewed first. Applications from families with multiple children with ASD are reviewed first.
Please be aware that Autism Care Today will not fund: transportation requests , hyperbolic oxygen therapy, and personal needs .

Our Family Services Community Grants Are Now Called Community Grants
This year, the program has been structured to focus on improving the mental health of autistic Canadians and their caregivers. Our recent Pandemic Canadian Autism Needs Assessment survey highlighted the adverse effects of the pandemic on autistic Canadians mental health and well being. Self-advocates and caregivers both reported feelings of isolation, anxiety, stress and worry. Mental health concerns and lack of social engagement were amongst the most challenging experiences to navigate for autistic adults, children and their families. The 2021 program aims to expand the capacity of service providers and respond to current needs and service gaps.

Grants are awarded through a rigorous review process, including a community panel of self advocates, family members, friends, service providers and research experts across Canada.

We Can Help Your Family With A Grant Up To $5000
Autism Care Today provides funding assistance to families throughout the United States on a quarterly basis. These grants are designed to provide access to individuals and families affected by Autism Spectrum Disorders. Since 2005, Autism Care Today has helped more than 1,562 families and provided more than $1.85 million in grants.
Different Benefits For Autism Grants
Due to the wide variety of abilities and needs of children on the autism spectrum, grants are quite diverse. Educational scholarships are typically geared towards university students, but local grants may cover the cost to attend a private school. The Central Intelligence Agency even has an inclusive program that covers the cost of university in exchange for CIA employment upon graduation. If your high school student is particularly gifted in science, technology, mathematics, medicine, or engineering, he/she might consider applying for the Foundation for Science and Disabilitys annual grant for students with autism. High school seniors who learn differently and plan to pursue higher education could apply to the RISE Scholarship Foundation.
Recreational grants help you give your child with autism a fun and enriching childhood. Jacks Dollars Scholarship is one such organization that gives children in Michigan $250 annually to help fund childrens passions for arts and crafts, dance, hobbies, music, recreation, and sports. National programs such as My Autism Spectrum Disorder Foundation sponsors a variety of recreation activities and equipment such as horseback riding, swimming, holiday gift cards, and iPads. Autism CaresThis Autism Cares webpage contains a direct link to the registration process for a Financial Support Award. These Awards are granted on a monthly basis to families who have experienced a qualifying event such as loss of employment. The maximum award per family is $1000.
Autism Family Resources GrantsOne-time $500 grants are awarded to families in financial need household income may not exceed $50,000 per year. All funds awarded are paid directly to the vendor or service provider to pay for therapy equipment, safety equipment or services. According to the CDC it costs an estimated $17,000 more per year to care for a child with autism compared to a child without autism. Costs include health care, education, ASD-related therapy, family-coordinated services, and caregiver time. For a child with more severe ASD, costs increase to over $21,000 more per year.
The cost to raise a child in the U.S, from birth through the age of 17 is approximately $233,610 , I shudder to think of the costs involved in raising my seven year old son with autism. This is especially when I consider that he may always be somewhat dependent on me even as an adult. As a mom, I see my sons care as a labor of love, but the financial reality is daunting to say the least.

Applying for grants can seem like a daunting process. Dont let paperwork, reference letters, and the waiting game discourage you from filling out an application. As an increasing volume of research on autism spectrum disorders is published, public awareness is rising, and servicesincluding grantsare more readily available than ever.
The first step in applying to autism grants is to identify your familys needs. Perhaps your family needs the grant to cover costs of supplemental therapies like art, music, or hippotherapy. Maybe you are seeking a grant to fund private school tuition. There are even grants that help bring sensory-friendly play equipment to your local playground.

The fact is that being short of cash makes everything harder, and caring for someone with autism spectrum disorder is no different.
Grants Worth $13m Will Support Interventions For Families Affected By Autism Spectrum Disorder
LAWRENCE The University of Kansas, through the Juniper Gardens Childrens Project, is a partner in two autism spectrum disorder research projects that have recently been awarded $13 million in federal grants.
One grant funds continuation of the Autism Intervention Research Network for Behavioral Health based at the University of California-Los Angeles, a project that focuses on partnering with community groups and key stakeholders to provide access to effective interventions for underserved families. An additional funded project between KU and the University of North Carolina-Chapel Hill aims to evaluate use of an assessment tool that monitors the progress of interventions for young children diagnosed with autism spectrum disorder.
These grants continue our decades-long emphasis on community-participatory research involving the community in describing and addressing their needs through research, and with their input as well as our long-standing focus on childrens development and autism, said Brian Boyd, director of the Juniper Gardens Childrens Project in Kansas City, Kansas.
The AIR-B 4 grant funds three intervention studies, all of which use a team-based approach that relies on social networks and on partnering with community providers to implement the studies. Two of the interventions will be implemented through Juniper Gardens, among other university partners.

Autism Grants For Families
Dannys Wish iPads for Autism applications will only be accepted September 1st through December 31st of each calendar year. Applications received and approved will be acknowledged by email & submitted to lottery for the next allocation of iPads awarded. Unfortunately incomplete applications will not be considered for award. iPads will be awarded each April of each calendar year.
First Hand is dedicated to impacting the health of children, their families and communities through reactive and preventative initiatives. To fulfill that mission, we provide funding for individual children with health-related needs when insurance and other financial resources have been exhausted.
Talk To Your Insurance Company
Begin by contacting your insurance company. Find out what you are allowed under Durable Medical Equipment and talk to a case manager about having an iPad covered through your DME .
If you are going the insurance route youâre going to want to have a clear reason why you want the iPad. You canât just say, âI hear theyâre great for special needs kids!â Do your research and know which apps in particular you want to use and which needs they will be addressing.
For example, I think it makes perfect sense to ask your insurance company to cover an iPad if you plan to use it as a communication device. You can argue that an app like Proloquo2go would be beneficial for your child and would cost much less than stand alone communication equipment . Be sure to request that your insurance also covers the communication app, though, since those can also cost hundreds of dollars.
On the other hand, if you just want to play with the iPad and use it to help teach your child about cause-and-effect or how to take turns , Iâm sure the insurance company would turn you down. Your childâs need for the iPad should be very clear.
