Salary for school psychologists varies widely based on location. According to the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics the national average salary for a school psychologist is $87,450, as of May 2019.
Individuals working in the field in Philadelphia make, on average, 17 percent above that each year. Los Angeles, where yearly wages are 15 percent above the national average, is another excellent location for school psychologists to work. New York and Phoenix, with salaries at 12 percent and 11 percent above the average, respectively, are also favorable locations to earn a higher wage. Conversely, school psychologists in San Antonio make 15 percent less than the national average. School psychologists in Atlanta and Denver also make less than their peers, at 6 percent less than the national average.
What Does A Psychologist Do For People With Autism
Psychologists are often involved in the process of diagnosing both children and adults with autism. They may also recommend appropriate treatment programs, and/or support the process of evaluation, benchmarking and ongoing assessment.
Developmental and child psychologists work with children to help them engage with others through play, and learn skills such as joint attention .
School psychologists may work with autistic students to help them engage with their peers, manage stress, or handle difficult interactions with bullies or general teasing. They may also work with parents;and teachers to develop strategies for school success.

What Are The Responsibilities Of A School Psychologist
School psychologists serve a variety of functions in the school setting. What Is An Individualized Education Program
Children with autism are guaranteed a free and fair education under the Individuals with Disabilities Education Act which was passed in 1975, and which incorporated autism in 1990. The law enables students to receive an individualized education program, which establishes a childs academic goals and includes the support they need to achieve those goals.
Those services could involve additional assistance in a typical classroom, learning from a special education teacher, working with a therapist, leveraging helpful technologies, or receiving accommodations such as extra time for assignments. IEPs aim to keep kids in general education classrooms as much as possible, but some parents feel that children with autism are better served in special education classrooms.

What Is The Role Of A School Psychologist In Bullying
School psychologists have several key roles to play regarding bullying. Most acutely, they counsel children affected by bullying. In this role they engage with the child and talk to them about the bullying and how that makes the child feel. The aim in this respect is to ensure that a child that is being bullied has a safe place where they can talk about their experiences and that they dont internalize the issue.
A school psychologist will also then work to assess the child displaying the bullying behaviors to try to establish underlying causes and ultimately work with them to address the issues. The aim of this work is to help the child with any difficulties they are having and find ways to replace their bullying behaviors with more positive ones. They can also act as a point of contact for parents of all children involved, providing guidance and support materials to help them also effectively deal with the situation.
School psychologists knowledge and experience of child development, psychology and education leaves them uniquely placed to have a role in prevention of bullying. They can provide a useful insight into constructing effective anti-bullying campaigns and activities and can advise around encouragement of more positive social interactions throughout the school environment.
What About Involving Other Professionals
A multidisciplinary or team approach is very helpful for this process, given the unique needs of children with ASD. If a speech/language pathologist and an occupational therapist are not involved in the initial evaluation, they should be consulted shortly after the ASD diagnosis is made. The SLP will assess speech/language use more thoroughly and devise an individualized plan for services. The OT can assist with gross and fine motor skills development in addition to sensory needs for those children with significant sensory-related preferences and aversions.

Who Can Diagnose Ld And/or Adhd
Many professionals are involved in the diagnosis of LD. They include psychologists, educational specialists, and other professionals who work in specialized fields such as speech and language. This table explains the role of some of the professionals who provide services. Recall that many of these professionals can suspect LD and/or ADHD but all are not licensed, or have the needed certifications to diagnose the disorders. It is always important to ask the professional about his/her credentials. When you go to a person in a private practice, not in the school system, it is important to determine if the professional has the needed license to be in private practice and to make the diagnosis of LD and/or ADHD.
What To Do If Your Child Is Diagnosed
If your child receives an autism diagnosis, you might feel overwhelmed and have many questions racing through your mind: Will my child be OK? How will we cope? What does this mean for their future? Where do I even start?
Talk with your pediatrician about services that are available to help autistic kids develop and sharpen their communication, social, motor, and academic skills.
The key is to get educated, find support as early as possible, and have compassion not just for your child but also for yourself.

Upon turning 3 years old, Tim will transition from receiving early intervention services to receiving special education services through his local school district.

When they have questions about their educational options as their child grows, school psychologists have a golden opportunity to help them understand and make important decisions about their childs education.
As school psychologists, we know first hand that the assessment and intervention with students on the Autism Spectrum can be complex. Given that we have the responsibility of partnering with parents in the process, we need to be on the cutting edge of research-informed best practices.
Because the needs of students on the Autism Spectrum can be complex, it is essential that we are consulting with our school psychologist peers and experts in the field to make sure we are on the cutting edge of best practices and research-informed decision making for supporting students with Autism.

How Can Teachers Help Students With Autism
Teachers can maintain predictable classroom routines. They can use concrete, specific language, since children with autism perceive language literally. They can incorporate visuals into the lessons to help kids process the material. They can also connect with a students parents to learn tips for working with an individual child. Implementing widespread autism competencies for teachers would ensure that every educator is equipped to serve autistic students.

How Do I Get Services For My Autistic Child
The first step is to reach out to your childs school district to schedule an evaluation. This will determine if your child is eligible to receive special education and related services. To be eligible for an individualized education program , children must have a disability, such as autism, that prevents them from learning successfully in the existing classroom environment.
An IEP team can include the childs parents, teacher, special education teacher, a representative from the school district, and a therapist to evaluate the results. The group will develop a plan with concrete goals and benchmarks to be reviewed on an annual basis.
Who Is Able To Diagnose Autism Spectrum Disorder
There are a number of professionals who can diagnose;Autism Spectrum Disorder . Each type of professional has different training. It is important to choose a professional who has extensive experience in diagnosing individuals with ASD and other conditions which may appear similar to ASD at first glance. Being able to distinguish between ASD and another condition is called making a differential diagnosis.
A Developmental Pediatrician is a pediatrician who has advanced training in developmental-behavioral medicine. Developmental Pediatricians evaluate, counsel, and provide treatment for children, adolescents, and their families with a wide range of developmental and behavioral difficulties, including ASD.
A Pediatric Neurologist is a pediatrician who has advanced training in pediatric neurology. Child neurologists treat children from birth into young adulthood and often diagnose, treat, and manage neurological conditions, including ASD.
A Child and Adolescent Psychiatrist is a physician who specializes in the diagnosis and the treatment of disorders of thinking, feeling, and/or behavior, which affect children, adolescents, and their families. Many do have specializations that include diagnosing ASD.

Parent 1 asks:;Does the school psychologist have the right to make the statement that his impression is not that of a child with an autism spectrum disorder? He said there is no school documentation of any criteria that would indicate an educational diagnosis of Autism.
My 11 yr. old daughter has a diagnosis of ADHD, ASPERGERS DISORDER, RAD. by a Board Certified in both General Psychiatry and Child and Adolescent Psychiatry. She was diagnosed last year.

Parent 2 responds: Sad to say, this happens around the country. Medical diagnosis does not equal educational diagnosis.
Try sending a letter to your school district saying that your child has been medically diagnosed as being on the Autism Spectrum.
Explain that you are concerned about the impact of this diagnosis upon her ability to access the educational opportunities offered by the school district. Ask that the districts autism expert evaluate your daughter.
Girls on the Autism Spectrum demonstrate their difficulties differently from boys. They often fly under the radar in school and fall apart at home.

Medical Diagnosis Vs Educational Eligibility For Special Services: Important Distinctions For Those Diagnosed With Asd
Parents are often surprised to learn that a medical diagnosis of Autism Spectrum Disorder does not automatically entitle a student to special education services under the Individuals with Disabilities Education Act . Eligibility for special education services is based, rather, on an educational determination of a disability, which includes meeting not just the criteria for a specific disability , but also finding that a student is in need of special services. Understanding the differences between a medical diagnosis and an educational determination of eligibility for special education services can help parents become better advocates for their children.
By contrast, educational eligibility is decided by a team comprised of various school professionals and a students parents. The team must find that the student qualifies for services under IDEA. To be eligible, IDEA requires that a student have at least one of 14 specified disabilities and be in need of special services. Autism is one of the 14 categories, but the definition of autism varies from state to state. Some states follow the medical definition found in the DSM, but others have their own definitions. In fact, some states exclude students with diagnoses of Aspergers Disorder or PDD-NOS from the autism category
