Dealing With Aggressive Outbursts From Autistic Children And Teenagers

Will autism get worse with age?

You probably cant prevent every outburst from your autistic child. So its important for you to have some strategies to deal with the aggressive behaviour when it happens.

Stay calm This is the first and most important thing. Most aggressive outbursts happen because your child has feelings building up and cant communicate them. By managing your own feelings and staying calm and quiet, you wont add your emotions to the mix.

Limit what you say During an outburst your child will be feeling very stressed. Its hard to process what someone else is saying when youre feeling stressed, and this is especially true for autistic children, who can have trouble understanding language.

So it can help if you dont say too much. Aim for short phrases or even just a couple of words for example, Sit down rather than Lachlan, come over here and sit down.

Move your child to a safer place For everyones safety, make sure your child isnt close to anything that could be harmful for example, shelves that could fall over or glass objects. A quiet enclosed space outside might be an option. You might also need to get other people to move out of the way for safety.

Consider visual cues Visual cues can help in these situations. For example, you might have a picture of a quiet place in your home that your child can go to.

When To Seek Medical Advice

Early intervention is very important in children with autism spectrum disorder. Services such as speech therapy and behavioral and skills training are more effective if begun when a child is young.

For this reason, it is helpful to receive a diagnosis as early as possible. However, many children remain undiagnosed until they are in school. Some people are not diagnosed until they are adults.

If you suspect someone has autism, including yourself, contact a medical professional as soon as possible.

Does Aba Therapy Cure Autism Spectrum Disorder

Autism is not cured once the goals of an ABA based therapy program are met or exceeded. In fact, no cure exists for autism spectrum disorder, and there is no one-size-fits-all treatment. The goal of treatment is to maximize your childs ability to function by reducing autism spectrum disorder symptoms and supporting development and learning. ABA therapy promotes the learners ability to function and reduces the severity or impact of the learners symptoms.

Some children may just need six to twelve months of ABA-based services while others may need the services for a more extended period of time. Irrespective of whether the services are needed for a relatively short time or on an ongoing basis, one of the greatest benefits of the therapy is that the parents/caregivers are given proper training so that the family may maintain and continue to generalize their childs learned skills from the services, with or without the services from the ABA therapy team. Equally important are the parents/caregivers ability to generalize their own skills when presented with similar situations that their child may face in the near future and again, in the absence of an ABA team.

What Does Autism Development Look Like

Lets get one thing clear before we continue, autism isnt something which can get better or worse because, quite frankly, that is not how autism works. Autism is a lifelong balancing act of multiple different quirks. So, when we say an autistic person is doing better, we really mean that we are learning to embrace our alternative mindsets, whilst doing worse is letting our unique potential be restricted by:

  • Social deficits
  • Anxiety
  • Restricted and repetitive behaviours

Additionally, when looking at opportunities for autistic people, it should be noted that while all autistic people orbit the same spectrum, not all of us have access to the same space. Therefore, better might mean learning to follow social norms but could just as easily mean learning how to operate a knife and fork both of these are achievements to be proud of and, as such, should be treated no less different.

But what about all those stories of the kid who overcame autism? you may ask. Well, although its not uncommon to find stories along these lines in magazines which appear in dentist waiting rooms, the reality is that in 71% of cases where an autistic person loses their diagnosis, it is often that they were never autistic to begin with, and that this came from an initial misdiagnosis.

Signs Of Autism In Older Children And Teens

Although autism spectrum disorder can reliably be diagnosed from the age of two or three years old, many children do not receive a diagnosis until they are older. Milder symptoms in children with autism spectrum disorder who are higher functioning may not be recognized until they are in school.

Autism is a spectrum condition, which means that children will have different experiences of day-to-day living. Children who are more than five years old and on into their teenage years, who have mild symptoms and are towards the higher functioning range of the autism spectrum, may:

  • Develop a narrow range of interests or obsessions with certain topics
  • Engage in repetitive behavior such as hand flapping, twirling or snapping a rubber band
  • Not make eye contact
  • Use formal language rather than the slang of their peers
  • Place great importance on routines and rules
  • Develop strong preferences for certain foods, clothes or objects

Children who have more severe symptoms and are towards the lower functioning range of the autism spectrum may:

  • Not use speech at all
  • Become extremely distressed at changes to routine
  • Exhibit challenging behavior, such as being aggressive or banging head on wall
  • Need assistance with everyday living, such as bathing and dressing
  • Engage in repetitive behaviors, such as rocking
  • Insist on rules and routine
  • Develop rigid preferences for certain foods, clothes or objects
  • Need specialized diets

There is no official diagnosis called “late-onset autism.” In fact, the DSM-5, which lists and describes all developmental and mental disorders states that the onset of symptoms is in the early developmental period.

Still, there are plenty of articles out there about children who appear to regress after developing normally throughout their earliest years. And there are plenty of people who seem to develop autistic symptoms as teens or even adults.

So does regressive or late-onset autism actually exist? What do we know about it so far?

Understanding Aggressive Behaviour In Autistic Children And Teenagers

Autism & Ageing: Does Autism Get Better or Worse With ...

If you understand what causes your autistic childs self-injurious and aggressive behaviour, you can help your child learn to manage the behaviour.

You can do this by looking at whats triggering the behaviour and what your child is getting out of it. Try keeping a diary of the behaviour for 1-2 weeks, noting what happens before and after the behaviour.

Understanding how well your child can communicate is also a key step in finding out whats causing the aggressive behaviour. When children cant express feelings or ask for what they need or want, they might use aggressive behaviour to communicate.

It can be helpful to ask yourself, Is my child trying to tell me something? For example, if your child doesnt like corn flakes but cant tell you, your child might hit you as a way of saying Take it away, I dont want it!

One way to manage your childs aggressive behaviour is by changing the triggers for the behaviour. Our article on managing challenging behaviour in autistic children explains how to do this.

What Causes Autism Spectrum Disorder

There is no clear-cut cause of ASD. Some causes that are supported by research include genetic and some environmental factors. Specific genetic causes can only be identified in 10% to 20% of cases. These cases include specific genetic syndromes associated with ASD and rare changes in the genetic code.

Risk factors include older parental age, low birth weight, prematurity and maternal use of valproic acid or thalidomide during pregnancy, among others. This field of study is an active one for reasearch.

Accept Them For Who They Are

Regardless of the message many parents of autistic teens get from the people and organizations around them, there is nothing wrong with your teen. They dont need to be fixed.

Instead, make your teen feel loved. Include them in all your family events. Get involved in their favorite activities.

Respect their boundaries, whether by letting them have their own friends and hobbies or by giving them privacy when they ask for it.

When the group with autism was compared with the group without autism, we found that rates of depression and anxiety were high in both groups. A third of adults diagnosed with autism report high levels of depression or anxiety rates much higher than in the general population. Depression among older adults is a risk factor for developing problems in memory and cognition. Given the high rates of depression among people with autism, it may be important for doctors to monitor mood during ageing to ensure that individuals are not at risk for cognitive decline due to depression.

The people described in our research were are not typical of people with autism. They all had cognitive abilities in the normal range and did not receive a diagnosis in childhood when autism is most often recognised. Despite this, older people in the study showed more severe symptoms of autism. This might suggest that symptoms of autism become more severe with age. However, reporting more symptoms could also reflect a change in self-awareness. Better self-awareness is generally a good thing, but might lead to greater realisation of ones own difficulties.

Articles On Autism Diagnosis

Autism spectrum disorder is usually diagnosed in young children. But what if you think you may be on the spectrum, and it never got diagnosed?

Parents of very young children are on the lookout for classic symptoms like lack of eye contact, repetitive movements, and sensory issues. And all kids are screened for these signs at their 18- and 24-month pediatrician well-child visits, so most cases of autism spectrum disorder are diagnosed by age 2.

That wasnât always the case. Not too long ago, some kids who would be diagnosed with autism spectrum disorder today might have been labeled as âdifficultâ or âlearning disabled,â and may not have gotten the help they needed.

Now, those children are adults and they or their family members may wonder if they might have ASD.

Do Autism Symptoms Get Worse With Age And Why

The answer is, not always. If there was adequate intervention early on in the adults life and they were diagnosed with autism when they were little, then many symptoms can get better. For instance, say a child had a lot of aggression when he was little. If there were treatments and approaches used from second or third grade on, or earlier, the aggression can be nipped in the bud. This is because he was taught how to cope with his anger in a more effective manner rather than physically lashing out. IF the child with autism wasnt caught early enough, say he was diagnosed at age twelve or later right when puberty hit, its going to be a long, hard road to avoid physically hurting others.

Other behaviors such as nervous ticks, repetitive chewing or picking, may get worse because there is very little in the way of non-medicinal substitutes that can stop these behaviors. The child and the adult with autism find these things very soothing, and they cant stop something that soothes them without having an equally acceptable and comforting replacement. Anti-anxiety medications may work, but prepubescent children arent allowed to take anti-anxiety meds unless the behaviors are seriously disruptive to himself and those in his environment.

Early Signs Of Autism Spectrum Disorder

Studies have shown that autism can be diagnosed as early as 14 months. It typically appears in the early ages of an individual.

This means that the infants first year is crucial in terms of the diagnosis of the disorder.

Many children with autism spectrum disorder show developmental differences. This can especially be seen in their social and language skills. There are certain developmental milestones babies hit while they are growing up.

Parents and caregivers should observe their childrens behaviors so as to be able to catch the disorder early on.

The 10 early signs of Autism Spectrum Disorder in children can be as follows:

  • Little to no eye contact during infancy,
  • No babbling,
  • Not expressing emotions,
  • Not seeming attached to parents.

Subtle differences caused by autism may appear before the childs first birthday. These differences will be visible in childrens interaction with their surroundings.

When 2-months old, babies generally begin to smile at people, coo, and are able to pay attention to faces. This may not be the case for children with autism spectrum disorder. By 6 months, if a baby

  • doesnt smile,
  • doesnt smile as big,
  • is not showing any other warm, joyful, and engaging expressions

It may be a sign of autism spectrum disorder.

By 9 months, children with ASD:

  • make limited or no eye contact with anyone
  • dont share sounds,
  • dont smile back-and-forth with parents.

Before their first birthday, babies on the autism spectrum,

What Are The Common Signs Of Autism In Teenagers

How to Recognize the Early Signs of Autism

The outward signs of ASD arent the same from person to person.

But the signs of autism in teens arent all that different from those in children or adults.

Heres a brief summary of the diagnostic criteria for autism according to the DSM-5:

  • having difficulty with social interactions and communication, such as having conversations or misunderstanding gestures
  • having intensely focused or restricted patterns of behavior, such as repetitive motor functions like hand-flapping, or a strict adherence to a daily routine to the extent of feeling distressed if these patterns are disrupted
  • outward signs of autism are identifiable early in development, even if theyre not easy to spot, as they may become more apparent when the child gets older
  • autism signs result in noticeable challenges adjusting to functions expected in social or workplace norms
  • autism signs arent more clearly part of a different intellectual disability or developmental disorder diagnosis

These signs are also diagnosed according to their severity.

Some people diagnosed with autism may show only mild forms of these signs. But others may experience severe forms that disrupt their ability to adjust to neurotypical social and communication norms.

This is why many people think its critical to get a diagnosis and get treated as early as possible.
