Is My 3 Year Old Daughter Autistic

Don't Miss

So How Do You Tell The Difference

Autism Assessment for a 3 Year Old Girl| ADOS Evaluation

When it comes to the way a child communicates with others, there are a few subtle differences between shyness and autism.

Generally, even though shy children typically avoid eye contact with strangers, they will look to their parent or caregiver for support. Also, a shy child may warm up eventually. That is, after watching the action from the sidelines for a while, they will join in with others at playgroup or in the park. Over time, they may open up to more people and show more confidence in new situations.

A child with autism, on the other hand, may not warm up even after spending a lot of time with others. Generally, they prefer to play alone. Also, a child with autism probably wont look to their parent for support in new situations they may not like eye contact even with those closest to them.

Celebrate All Of Your Childs Achievements

I wish I had known that unlike other parents we cant take even the smallest achievement or milestone for granted. When our son started wearing his coat without a fight and expressed that he was cold, when he was able to participate in circle time during music class and when he got up on stage with the other kids at his school show we celebrated.

Autism Signs: Social Interactions

  • Lack of or poor eye contact. Toddlers are social beings. The lack of eye contact or poor eye contact is a strong indicator of autism.
  • Unaware of other peoples feelings. Toddlers are generally pretty good at deciphering other people and childrens feelings. For example, as early as 24 months of age, if you pretend to cry, your toddler will pat you on the back or give you one of their favorite toys or blankets to help you feel better. Children with autism have a difficult time relating to these feelings.
  • Not responding to their name being spoken. When a parent or caregiver says a toddlers name at the very least they should turn their head toward the sound of their name being spoken.
  • Prefer playing alone. Most children with autism are not very social and may prefer to retreat into their own world. While it is absolutely normal for toddlers to play alone at times most of their play will be centered around adult interactions and pretend play.

Don’t Miss: How To Tell If My Child Is Autistic

What Are The Tell

Autism spectrum disorder is one of the most common neurodevelopmental disorders. It can be seen in all groups of age. The Centers for Disease Control states that the disorder does not discriminate between racial, ethnic and socioeconomic groups.

Oftentimes, certain severe forms of ASD are diagnosed before the child turns two. However, high-functioning individuals may not be recognized and diagnosed until later ages in their lives.

  • The level of science,
  • Knowledge on autism spectrum disorder itself at the time,
  • Lack of social and economic means they had,

This happens because autistic adults were not diagnosed when they were children.

Since autism spectrum disorder is still, in part, a mystery, studies generally focus on where the disorder stems from to figure out how it occurs in the first place. This has caused the focus to be on children. The adults who have never been diagnosed in their lives were partially left out in the research sphere.

However, in recent years, awareness of autism spectrum disorder in adults has increased significantly. This is due to the fact that the public is now aware of the signs and understands that a diagnosis can be made even later in life of a person.

Autism spectrum disorder impacts three main areas in an individuals life: the social aspect, communication, and their behaviors.

Since we understand autism more and more every day, we are now able to differentiate and diagnose more adults with ASD.

Rates Are On The Rise

An estimated 1 in 40 children in this country have autism to some degree, according to a recent study from Pediatrics based on 2016 data. That’s about 1.5 million children between the ages 3 to 17. Nationwide, autism strikes three to four times more boys than girls the rates are about the same for kids of all races.

Although there seems to be an autism epidemic, the Pediatrics study attributes the increasing prevalence to more inclusive reporting. The definition of autism has been expanded in the past decade to include a wider spectrum of problems with communication and social interaction. “Ten years ago, many children with mild autism were simply not diagnosed,” says Adrian Sandler, M.D., a developmental-behavioral pediatrician at Mission Children’s Hospital, in Asheville, North Carolina, and chair of the American Academy of Pediatrics’ committee on children with disabilities. Plus, there are more state and federal programs for autistic kids, giving doctors an incentive to diagnose and refer them. However, there may be additional, unknown reasons for the spike in autism rates, and researchers are investigating everything from environmental toxins to viruses to food allergies.

Challenging Behaviors In Autism

People with autism spectrum disorder may exhibit behaviors which put themselves at risk, cause difficulties for people around them or which are not socially acceptable.

Around 50 percent of people with autism engage in behavior that can cause themselves harm when they feel frustrated, overwhelmed or unwell. Such behaviors can include:

  • Banging their head on walls or other objects
  • Hitting themselves, e.g. hitting their head with their hands
  • Poking themselves in the eye
  • Pulling their hair
  • Biting themselves
  • Smearing feces

A person with autism who feels frustrated, overwhelmed or feeling unwell may also display physically aggressive behavior. This can include:

  • Throwing objects
  • Hitting, slapping or biting other people
  • Pulling other peopleââ¬â¢s hair

Some people with autism eat objects that are not edible, or keep the objects in their mouth, a behavior known as pica. It is the most common eating disorder found in people with autism spectrum disorder. People may eat anything, including dirt or soap.

Research Early Signs And Treatment

There’s been widespread controversy about a possible connection between vaccines and the soaring autism rates. Some parents of children whose autistic symptoms first appeared shortly after their measles-mumps-rubella immunization are convinced the shot was the cause, but repeated studies have failed to find scientific evidence. Although one small, heavily publicized British study published in 1998 suggested a link, 10 of the 13 authors publicly retracted the findings in March 2004, saying they were unreliable. The study, lead by Dr. Andrew Wakefield, only studied a small sample of 12 kids, eight of whom were diagnosed with autism. By early 2010, the same British journal, The Lancet, that published his findings retracted his study and in January 2011, the British Medical Journal publicly denounced Dr. Wakefield’s research as “fraudulent.” The British Medical Journal announced that Dr. Wakefield had “falsified data” and tampered with his research results to give the MMR vaccine bad publicity. At the time of his study, Dr. Wakefield had been involved in a lawsuit against the manufacturers of the MMR vaccine and would have gained money if he’d won, making his research an obvious conflict of interest.

How Did I Know My Daughter Was Autistic

By Leslie Burby

May 17, 2021

To be completely honest, I thought I was well educated on special education. I mean after all, I have worked with several different students with a wide range of learning disabilities, physical disabilities, etc.

However, reality didnt set in until I had my own child. Lets face it there is a huge difference between reading something in a book and living it.

My first child was a beautiful, healthy, bright eyed little girl. As an educator, I had such high hopes. I hung black and white pictures next to her changing table and read to her every day. Then one day, my experience in education told me something was wrong with my beautiful baby. Since her birth I struggled to get her to eat. She was very thin and the insurance company even sent someone to weigh her weekly. All she did was sleep and then as she got older, it was impossible to get her to go to sleep.

Eventually, I learned that my daughter is autistic. To be more specific my oldest daughter, Mary, has Aspergers Syndrome. To me it seemed like a very long time to get her properly diagnosed and treated.Today, when I tell people that I have a daughter on the autism spectrum they always ask 2 things:

What was your autistic child like as an infant? What was your daughter like as a toddler? When did you know your child was autistic? How did you know your child was autistic?

I had never heard of the latter two so let me explain.

Be Grateful For The Strong Connection You And Your Child Will Forge

In reflecting over the last 24 years of our journey, I will say this: My son gives me 100 kisses and hugs every day, he is always happy to see me and he will always be with me. He doesnt lie and he doesnt judge. He is welcoming to anyone that wants to enter his world. On the other hand, my father sees me about twice a year since we live 1,000 miles apart. So which dad is better off? Its not better or worse, its just different. Once you understand that, your road will be smoother.

About Early Signs Of Autism

Some early signs of autism usually appear in the first 1-2 years of life.

Early signs of autism are listed below. Some children have many early signs, whereas others have only a few. The number of signs autistic children have varies according to their age and the effect that autism has on their everyday lives.

Sometimes early signs of autism change over time. For example, children might lose or stop using social-communication or language skills, or signs might become clearer as children get older.

How Can You Tell An Autistic Meltdown From A Tantrum

Signs of autism in a 3 year old child

1)Goal oriented vs overload. A tantrum in a young child typically stems from frustration from not getting what they want in that moment: wether it is a toy, being able to button up their own shirts, or not wanting to go to bed . While tantrums in young children can be more frequent when they are tired, hungry or not feeling well, they are always goal oriented. Either the frustration at not getting what they want, not being able to do what they want, or even not being able to communicate what they want properly. An autistic meltdown on the other hand is all about being overwhelmed. For someone with autism, when they reach the point of sensory, emotional, and information overload, or even just too much unpredictability, it can trigger a variety of external behaviours that are similar to a tantrum , or it can trigger a complete shutdown and withdrawal.

2)Tantrums need an audience. Tantrum behaviour will usually stop when the parent ignores the behaviour, when the child is removed from a public space where the behaviour is occurring, or when the child gets whatever it is they want . An autistic meltdown will occur with or without an audience. They can occur when the person with autism is entirely alone. They are the response of an external stimulus overload that leads to an emotional explosion .

Being On The Spectrum Can Mean A Wide Variety Of Experiences

Autism is described as a spectrum of disorders for a reason. Signs of autism can present differently.

Some individuals will have significant behavior and communication challenges that make the possibility of an autism spectrum disorder diagnosis more likely.

In other cases, caregivers may notice occasional atypical behaviors but that dont immediately cause them to seek a full behavioral health evaluation.

In the latter scenario, a child may never have their autism diagnosed or addressed therapeutically. Its possible that mildly-expressed forms of ASD behavior go completely unnoticed.

But another possibility is that an undiagnosed child or their caregiver will feel frustrated by a lack of explanation for certain behavioral events. They may struggle with socialization, for instance, or they may lack commitment to extracurricular activities.

Ignoring the possibility of an autism diagnosis, especially if a child seems mostly neurotypical, can make it more difficult for them to adjust and have their needs met. For this reason, teachers and caregivers who observe subtle signs of ASD should speak with a mental health professional.

A childs parents, teachers, and others with a direct role in their life are the best observers when it comes to picking up on a possible autism spectrum disorder diagnosis. Only a licensed mental health professional can come to a full, accurate diagnosis, but you dont have to be a professional to suspect that an ASD diagnosis is possible.

What Is The Cost Of A Misdiagnosis

Autism can be misdiagnosed as another neuro developmental disorder, like ADHD or a mental health disorder, like borderline personality disorder. This can mean that autistic women and girls can end up having therapies or treatments that are not appropriate for their needs. This can be confusing and harmful in the long term as they struggle to get the right support they need at the right time and can also end up with them feeling misunderstood and potentially traumatised by having the wrong kind of help. The costs of a missed diagnosis are many.

An autism diagnosis can be life changing. It can explain years of feeling different and help unlock educational and employment support. Without a diagnosis autistic people will go through their lives unable to understand who they are and why they seem to struggle with things others seem to take for granted. This can lead to mental health problems such as depression, anxiety or eating disorders.

Dont Worry About What Other People Are Thinking

The most freeing moment of this journey for us was when we stopped worrying about public appearance. Your child needs for you to be 100 percent in tune with them and what they are experiencing, not worried about how you are perceived.

Autism Signs: Age One Through Three

The majority of children who are diagnosed with Autism are diagnosed soon after their second birthday. This is due to the fact that most developmental milestones are reached during this time. Autism signs can be observed in three specific areas of a childs life: social interactions, communication and repetitive behaviors. Please remember that ten children can have the exact same diagnosis and all ten children are completely different from each other. No two children with autism are exactly alike.

For this section we will list specific autism signs that parents should be watching for in their childs social interactions, communications, and behavior. If you notice these signs of autism in your child at any point in their development please have them screened for autism. Early screening, detection, and intervention are crucial for improved outcomes for children with autism.
