If the patient spends hours a night with thoughts bouncing and his body tossing, this is probably a manifestation of ADHD. The best treatment is a dose of stimulant-class medication 45 minutes before bedtime. This course of action, however, is a hard sell to patients who suffer from difficulty sleeping. Consequently, once they have determined their optimal dose of medication, I ask them to take a nap an hour after they have taken the second dose.
Generally, they find that the medications paradoxical effect of calming restlessness is sufficient to allow them to fall asleep. Most adults are so sleep-deprived that a nap is usually successful. Once people see for themselves, in a no-risk situation, that the medications can help them shut off their brains and bodies and fall asleep, they are more willing to try medications at bedtime. About two-thirds of my adult patients take a full dose of their ADHD medication every night to fall asleep.
Experts point out that sleep disturbances in people diagnosed with ADHD are not always due to ADHD-related causes. Sometimes patients have a co-morbid sleep disorder in addition to ADHD. Some professionals will order a sleep study for their patients to determine the cause of the sleep disturbance. How To Get Better Sleep
There are a few steps that someone with ADHD can try to improve sleep. Avoiding napping four hours before bedtime and consuming any caffeine – through coffee, chocolate, etc. – can help. Also, if their medication is a stimulant, take it as early as possible so it doesn’t impact sleep.

Study Design And Patients
This cross-sectional study was conducted at the Adult ADHD Program of the Hospital Universitari Vall d’Hebron in Barcelona . Participants referred for the first time to the ADHD Program were recruited consecutively between April 2019 and February 2020 whether ADHD diagnosis was confirmed. This study was approved by the Clinical Research Ethics Committee of the Hospital Universitari Vall d’Hebron. All the participants voluntarily agreed to get involved in the study and did not receive any financial compensation.
The participants fulfilled the following inclusion criteria: were over 18 years, met ADHD criteria according to DSM-5, accepted to participate, and signed the informed consent. Those patients diagnosed with a sleep disorder other than insomnia disorder , intellectual disability , or any medical condition that could explain the symptoms of ADHD were excluded.

We already know that sleep gets short shrift by adolescents generally, and that sleep problems among teenagers arent uncommon.
On average, all teens get too little sleep, but adolescents with ADHD symptoms sleep even less than their age peers, says Mari Hysing, a psychologist and researcher at Uni Research Health in Bergen. A new study that she led among 10,000 adolescents between the ages of 16 and 19 from Hordaland county in Norway was recently published in the journal Behavioral Sleep Medicine.
The study indicates a strong correlation between ADHD symptoms and sleep problems. Hysing believes that young people being treated for ADHD should also get help with sleep challenges.
Connecting ADHD symptoms and sleep issues
Previous studies show that five per cent of all young people struggle with symptoms of ADHD, which include concentration problems, impulsiveness and hyperactivity. A number of smaller studies have also shown that children and adults who have had an ADHD diagnosis have more sleep problems than others.
But until now no large population studies have been undertaken that show a correlation between ADHD symptoms and sleep problems.
The researchers were looking to determine whether young people who had not been diagnosed with ADHD, but who have many of the typical symptoms of the condition, were similarly affected by sleep problems.
The study shows that teens with concentration problems sleep on average one hour less per night than other youth.

Are Sleep Problems Misdiagnosed As Adhd
In my experience, insomnia-induced ADHD isnt common, but I have referred two dozen teens and young adults for sleep studies to avoid misdiagnosing them. Some were found to have sleep apnea, narcolepsy, or primary insomnia, and treatment improved sleep and reduced symptoms. But those teens also wound up being treated at our clinic for ADHD. Nevertheless, I believe that severe sleep deprivation can present with ADHD-like symptoms, but most of such cases should be screened out from an ADHD diagnosis with an evaluation.
Poor sleep can result from ADHD, complicating diagnosis. This condition is common but under-recognized. Both of my children have what I call ADHD-related insomnia. I made up this name for it because I saw it so often among my clients, whose active minds didnt shut down just because it was 10:30 p.m. Its hard to know if this condition describes your child because you cant easily separate this kind of insomnia from the one previously described. Which comes first: the chicken or the egg? The best solution the prescriber at our clinic has found is to begin treatment with stimulant medication, and follow the case closely for a month. Some teens will sleep better after beginning stimulants. A few will have daytime sleepiness despite taking them. That generally proves the diagnosis, but it also suggests its time to try a different stimulant or to pursue a sleep study.

In order of frequency, the combined presentation of ADHD was the most common , followed by the inattentive presentation and hyperactive/impulsive presentation . Regarding insomnia, 44.4% of patients met the criteria for insomnia disorder and 63.9% of the total sample participants had insomnia symptoms.

Maintaining A Consistent Routine
A consistent bedtime routine can help children fall asleep more easily. Try:
