ASD is most often a life-long condition. Both children and adults with autism benefit from behavioral interventions or therapies that can teach new skills to address the core deficits of autism and to reduce the core symptoms. Every child and adult with autism is unique. For this reason, the treatment plan is individualized to meet specific needs. It is best to begin interventions as soon as possible, so the benefits of therapy can continue on throughout the course of life.

Many people with ASD often have additional medical conditions, such as gastrointestinal and feeding issues, seizures and sleep disturbances. Treatment can involve behavioral therapy, medications or both.

Early intensive behavioral treatments involves the entire family and possibly a team of professionals. As your child ages and develops, treatment may be modified to cater to their specific needs.

The main treatment for autism is called applied behavioral analysis . This is a behavioral program that breaks actions and behaviors down into small steps. It encourages positive behaviors and discourages negative behaviors. Other treatments include occupational therapy, sensory integration therapy, and strategies to improve communication, such as using pictures that children can point at to let caregivers know what they want.

Heres the thing: ABA and the other treatments are helpful for children with developmental problems, no matter what their cause. There is no downside to doing them even if the child ultimately is found to have a different problem or no problem at all. They are good for the child with autism, the child with a language disability, or a late bloomer. Yes, its hard for parents to hear a diagnosis of autism. But there is much reason for hope when it comes to autism, and we should never waste time when a child needs help.

• The current diagnosis for autism spectrum disorder is long and complicated.
• A new blood test showed nearly 95% accuracy in detecting the disorder.
• More research is needed to determine if this could be the future of autism diagnoses.

Diagnosing autism spectrum disorder is a challenging and lengthy process for physicians, largely because there is no single medical test to help. But a team of researchers has developed a blood test that can predict whether someone has ASD with up to 95% accuracy.

Their findings, published in thejournal Research in Autism Spectrum Disorders in late August, show metabolites in blood can be indicators of ASD.

The current method of diagnosing the disorder is purely observational, which makes it time-consuming, lead study author Juergen Hahn, PhD, a professor and head of the Department of Biomedical Engineering at Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute, tells Verywell. One result of this is while ASD can be diagnosed by 18 to 24 months, the average age of diagnosis is around four years of age. There is often a long waiting period involved between when concerns regarding ASD are noted and when an actual diagnostic observation is scheduled.”

They might ask you to watch your childs behaviour and keep records. This is to see whether your childs behaviour changes with a few more months of development.

If youre told to wait and watch, there are things you can do to help your child’s development:

• Get your child checked every 3 months by your child and family health nurse, GP or paediatrician.

Are There Medications For Asd

Theres currently no medication for the core symptoms of ASD, although this is an area of active research at Boston Childrens. Medications are, however, often used successfully for symptoms related to ASD, such as irritability, hyperactivity or attention problems, anxiety, or seizures. Often, once these related symptoms are treated, your child can make more progress with behavioral therapies for ASD itself.

Conducting An Adult Autism Evaluation

Because of these limitations, the evaluation of an adult has to lean heavily on direct observation. This will be in the context of a discussion between the clinician and the patient about current challenges in the areas of social interaction and communication, sensory issues and restricted interests or repetitive behaviors.

However, some higher functioning adults on the autism spectrum become very resourceful in developing strategies to compensate for their disabilities. Clearly, this makes a diagnosis based on observation much more difficult.

But diagnosis remains important even when for those who have learned to hide their symptoms because they may still struggle in their everyday lives and interactions.

In these cases, its important to explore the lifelong presence of related developmental issues. In particular, its critical to get detailed information about early childhood. Sometimes this clearly reveals an early development that fits with a diagnosis of ASD.

While our diagnostic checklists are designed for children, I find that they can be useful as we explore an adults childhood development. In particular, I sometimes interview older relatives such as parents who can recall the patients early childhood in some detail. Often they can answer questions from diagnostic checklists and, so, inform a possible diagnosis. Clearly, this is not possible when there isnt an older relative available for a reliable report.

What Does Research On Autism Tell Us

A recent study focused on this question. Researchers looked at more than 1,200 toddlers who had at least two developmental evaluations between 12 and 36 months. Less than 2% of the toddlers initially thought to have autism were subsequently thought to have normal development. And on the flip side, 24% initially thought to not have autism were then later diagnosed as having it. So while the picture is not always clear at first, once the diagnosis is made, it usually sticks.

At what age can the diagnosis be reliably made? At 12 to 13 months the diagnostic stability of the autism diagnosis meaning the degree to which it was certain and stuck was about 50%. This went up to 80% by 14 months, and 83% by 16 months. This makes sense if you think about the development of a toddler. At 12 months, they are just starting to say words, respond to commands, and interact with others. So a child who isnt reliably doing those things would be cut some slack. But by 18 months, all those skills should be solidly in place, raising alarm bells about a child who doesnt have them.
