Personality Disorders: The Big Bang Theory’s Sheldon Cooper
Sheldon Cooper, superbly portrayed by Jim Parsons on CBS’s The Big Bang Theory, is a very complex guy. Some might agree that he is brilliant only at the things he is passionate about and inept at anything else. Sheldon lives with, and works in the same university as, his friend Leonard Hofstadter. The show takes place predominantly in their apartment where they are often visited by two friends and CalTech colleagues, Rajesh Koothrappali and Howard Wolowitz. These four friends often get themselves involved in funny situations, initially with just Penny, who lives next door to Sheldon and Leonard, but later on with other characters as well.
Many of the episodes are centered around Sheldon Cooper’s quirks and nuances. Sheldon’s behavior and thought patterns align closely with some personality disorders. Perhaps he is suffering from more than one personality disorder.
*Note: For people to be diagnosed with a personality disorder, the “symptoms” have to be chronic and interfere with everyday life.

Like many autists, Sheldon surrounds himself with rituals and routines that help him make sense of the world. Its an interesting juxtaposition, considering how intelligent he is but, it demonstrates that some aspects of an autistic mind defy logic making us fall back to the simple concept of if it feels good, do it.
Similarly, while Raymond is shown as locked into his repetitive behaviour , Rain Man perhaps does a more a eloquent job of this by clearing showing that, for autistic people, these behaviours arent just an oxygen mask, they are the whole ejector seat, parachute and soft landing that can get us through some of the hardest challenges i.e. when we are lost, dealing with sensory hell or, in Raymonds case when being abducted by our long lost brother, who only wants us for the $3million we inherited from our detached father. You know, typical autism stuff.

The question of whether the quirky and quite particular character of Sheldon is on the spectrum is hotly debated, and has come up in fan panels and media interviews ever since the shows first season.
The shows co-creators have declined to label Sheldon with this termPrady says he got his inspiration for Sheldon not from the autism spectrum but from a computer programmer he once worked with. They are just Different, and while they have paid a price in the past for appearing to be insensitive and not understanding the social politics all around them, technical jobs give them a place where their special abilities are valued and protected. A highly-social person who cant handle algebra or figure out where shes saved a file on her computer is not viewed as having an illness so it makes no sense to pity Aspies or suggest they have a disorder. Their brains are organized differently, and the lack of social skill tends to be balanced by other skills useful in the physical world.
A Teaspoon Of Borderline Personality Disorder
People who exhibit characteristics of Borderline Personality Disorder have short spurts of moodiness. They have a hard time calming down once they are upset. They could end up having impulsive, angry outbursts. They have a polarized view of the world and function in terms of extremes such as “all or nothing”. They have a hard time focusing on anything for long.
When Sheldon Cooper doesn’t get his way, he throws fits and tantrums. He is an extremist in some ways and tends to pout. He definitely has an “all or nothing” attitude. In a few episodes, when the four friends are ready to do something and Sheldon doesn’t get his way, he often shuts down and doesn’t want to participate at all. He sometimes ends up spending the evening by himself as a result.
Sheldon also has a hard time calming down once he is upset. It seems that his mother is the only one that can fully calm him down when he is in a funk. During one episode, Sheldon wouldn’t come out of his room as he was very upset with the world. His roommate, Leonard, called Sheldon’s mother, who eventually traveled from Texas to California to pull Sheldon out of his depressing pout session. On occasion, Penny will be able to calm Sheldon down, but most of the time, his mother is the only one who can calm down “Shelly,” as she calls him.
Most of the time, when Sheldon pouts and pulls his “all or nothing” tactics, he comes across as an intelligent man trapped in a young boy’s body, throwing childish tantrums to get his way.

On Sheldon Cooper And Hollywoods Failure To Portray Autistic People
Hollywoods historical ineptitude at supporting minority characters in major films and TV is made even more problematic by their insistence on creating autistic characters, but refusing to ever label any of them as autistic for a multitude of incredibly harmful reasons.
There are well-known examples of this, like Sheldon in the Big Bang Theory. Most people can see the numerous autistic stereotypes that make up Sheldon: hes very poor at reading social cues, he has a very rigid routine, he has special interests that he routinely info-dumps on. However, Mayim Bialik, the actress who played Amy, claimed that, We dont pathologize our characters. We dont talk about medicating them or even really changing them.
Thatsgreat, but not the question? It is not pathologizing to note that a character who was written as autistic is autistic, and it is certainly not asking to change that character in some way. The character already is autistic, which is the entire problem here: writers are happy to include autistic characters, but only if theyre just weirdos who are high-functioning. Giving an autistic character the label would, according to people like Bialik, somehow change and damage the character, which is both unreasonable and harmful.

Aspergers Syndrome is a form of Autism that is in the mild end of the autism spectrum. Similar to other forms of autism, AS is characterized by deficits in social communication, social interaction and imagination, but usually have average or above average IQ levels. People with AS always think literally, have little to no clue about facial expressions, tone of voice, and gestures. They find other people difficult to read, hence may view others actions as confusing and also fail to behave in socially appropriate ways. Most conversations with them are one-sided, with them leading and rarely taking your opinions. Finally, they stick to their routines and have a special interest that they may excell on.
Also, he is incapable of faking his emotions in order to avoid hurting other peoples feelings. A Cup Of Obsessive Compulsive Personality Disorder
People who suffer from Obsessive Compulsive Personality Disorder exhibit the following characteristics. They:

- function well with lists and schedules
- are perfectionists
- are rigid and inflexible
- and need to be in control.
We see the OCPD part of Sheldon Cooper in the very first, pilot episode. Sheldon has a “thing” with sitting in “his seat” in the apartment he shares with his roommate, Leonard. Sheldon tells his rationale about the seat to Leonard and next door neighbor Penny:
In the winter that seat is close enough to the radiator to remain warm, and yet not so close as to cause perspiration. In the summer, it’s directly in the path of a cross-breeze created by opening windows there and there. It faces the television at an angle that is neither direct, thus discouraging conversation, nor so far wide as to create a parallax distortion. I could go on, but I think I’ve made my point.
Another obsessive-compulsive part of Sheldon’s personality comes out when he is knocking on either Penny’s front door or Leonard’s bedroom door to get their attention. Sheldon feels the need to knock three times in a row, quickly, before saying the person’s name, then knock three more times in a row, quickly, before saying the person’s name again, and finally, knock three more times in a row, quickly, and then say the name again. For example:

Scottish Teacher Told To Watch The Big Bang Theory As Prep For Pupils With Aspergers
A Glasgow teacher was told to watch the television sitcom The Big Bang Theory as a guide for learning about students with Aspergers syndrome, a Scottish educator recently told members of Scotlands parliament.
Sylvia Haughney, a teachers union representative, cited the incident as an example of poor instruction in Glasgow schools, Scotlands Courier reported. Haughney said she had asked a staff member, who was working with a child with Aspergers, about her level of training.
Oh, I was told to watch The Big Bang Theory, replied the teacher, Haughney said.
Whether characters in the sitcom The Big Bang Theory have Aspergers particularly the lanky Sheldon Cooper, a theoretical physicist who boasts an IQ of 187 has been a matter of some debate.
Writers of the Big Bang Theory said that they are reluctant to give Sheldon an official diagnosis, worrying about a potential conflict between the sitcom premise and an accurate portrayal of Aspergers syndrome. Show co-creator Bill Prady would feel uncomfortable labeling Sheldon as such, according to TV critic Alan Sepinwall at the Star-Ledger.
But that has not kept some members of the autism community from embracing Sheldon.
Sheldon occasionally speaks in non sequiturs and displays eccentric behaviors. An early episode shows Sheldon becoming distressed, for instance, when he finds his usual couch seat occupied by the newcomer Penny.
That is just gone, Haughney said, according to the BBC.
