Autism is a spectrum disorder, which means that people can experience a wide range of symptoms and of varying severities. For example, a person with autism who is towards the high functioning range of the spectrum will have a good grasp of language, but a person towards the low functioning range of the spectrum may not speak at all.
As such, it is important to note that a person with autism spectrum disorder will not display all symptoms and symptoms will vary in severity. However, a person with ASD will display several of these behaviors and signs.
Where To Test Your Child For Autism
If you suspect your child may have autism spectrum disorder, start by raising your concerns with your childs pediatrician. If your doctor determines that your child may be showing symptoms of autism, they will refer you to a specialist who treats children with autism spectrum disorder, such as a child psychiatrist or psychologist, pediatric neurologist, or developmental pediatrician, for an evaluation.
Behavioral Therapies For Autism Spectrum Disorder
If your child has just been diagnosed with autism spectrum disorder , you may feel youve entered a maze, trying to find the best therapies to help your child communicate, have meaningful interactions with others, and develop the skills he needs to reach his full potential.
A variety of intensive behavioral therapies can help children with ASD build language, social, and play skills. Most are provided through programs run by your state and local school system. They include early intervention services for children under age 3 and special education services for children age 3 and older.
We can recommend specific therapies and educational strategies that address your childs needs while playing to her strengths. For instance, some children are strong visual learners: they may not understand if you explain something verbally, but can instantly grasp a new idea from a picture. Some children may not speak or make good eye contact, but can understand spoken requests and explanations.
In any case, experts agree that therapy should start as early as possible, should be intensive and highly structured, should be done one-on-one or in very small groups, and should actively include families. Often, children receive a combination of different therapies. The effectiveness of any therapy plan should be evaluated frequently, so that changes can be made if needed.

How Parents Can Spot The Warning Signs
As a parent, youre in the best position to spot the earliest warning signs of autism. You know your child better than anyone and observe behaviors and quirks that a pediatrician, in a quick fifteen-minute visit, might not have the chance to see. Your childs pediatrician can be a valuable partner, but dont discount the importance of your own observations and experience. The key is to educate yourself so you know whats typical and whats not.
Monitor your childs development. My Child Has Not Been Diagnosed With Autism What Next
If you have gone through the assessment process and not received a diagnosis for your child, you may feel relieved by the results, but also a little frustrated or confused, and not know where to go to next.
The health professional conducting the autism assessment will be able to provide information about why your child did not meet the criteria to be diagnosed with an Autism Spectrum Disorder , and will provide you with a written report.
The assessing professional may be able to provide further information, and any other assessments that might be beneficial, or refer you to other supports and services.
Professionals conducting autism assessments are guided by a very specific criteria, and professional standards of practice, and need to ensure these are upheld when conducting an autism assessment. They generally take considerable time reviewing all the information before making a decision.
If you disagree with the outcome, it is best to discuss this with the health professional who made the assessment, and listen to the reasons why this was the case.
If you still disagree, you have the right to get another autism assessment completed for your child with a different professional or service provider.
Age Ranges For The Ados
There are different levels or Modules that are used. These are based upon the verbal level of the person who is being tested, not their specific age. They include:
- Module 1 is used for a child who is nonverbal or uses very few words.
- Module 2 is used for a child who uses some words but does not speak readily.
- Module 3 is appropriate for children who can speak fluently.
- Module 4 is used with adolescents and adults who can speak fluently.
It is important to note that both modules 1 and 2 do not rely upon the childs ability to produce verbal communication. Instead, they allow for various demonstrations of the childs inherent ability. At the same time, you should understand that both modules 3 and 4 rely upon interview questions, conversation and other measures of expressive language.
Even so, there is a module that is appropriate for people of almost all ages. They are not appropriate for nonverbal adolescents and adults or children with nonverbal ages of less than 12 months though. For these people, and expressive language test is more useful as it can help with assessing language levels.

At Boston Childrens Hospital, we recommend that all children who have been diagnosed with ASD get genetic testing to screen for specific DNA changes that have been linked to ASD and could cause other medical issues. For some families, information from genetic testing can also be important for family planning.

What Are The Symptoms Of Autism
The early signs and symptoms of autism vary widely. Some children with ASD only have mild symptoms, and others have severe behavioral issues.

The DISCO is a helpful diagnostic tool for individuals who cant provide a detailed history of developmental behaviors categorized under ASD. Tests like screening with the DSM-5 typically need a developmental history before a diagnosis can be made. However, the DISCO should be used alongside standardized assessments as with that in the DSM-5.

There are many things you can do to help a child with autism spectrum disorder. Start by ensuring their treatment plan is tailored according to their individual needs and work closely with the therapists, teachers and doctors involved to make sure you are following through with the therapy at home and school. It is also important to provide children with autism with a sense of structure in their lives. Create a detailed routine for your child and stick with it.
