1) The son of immigrants, Pudi is half-Indian, half-Polish. He used to speak Polish with his grandmother and recently did an impromptu Polish danceon The Bonnie Hunt Show.
2) He got the Community role on his birthday.We were out to dinner and I got the call, and I was, like, shaking. I think I dropped the phone in my chili. I wanted the role so badly. Maybe we shouldnt tell anyone that it was my birthday, though. Im trying to keep my age a secret. Im trying to pretend Im 15. Ha!
3) He might look 15, but he considers himself an old soul. I eat oatmeal every morning. I like to watch birds out my window for a really long time. Like, Ill sit there, and Ill be watching a squirrel and a bird and Ill look at my watch and think: I just watched that bird for 20 minutes. Wow, what has my life come to?
4) He doesnt know if his character has Aspergers Syndrome, and he doesnt care. Weve never said yes or no, and I dont know that the show wants to take a stand on that. Whenever I read the script, I just try to look at what Abed says, where hes coming from and how he looks at the world. Im just trying to play the character as real and honest as I can.

Still Autistic Characters Are Rare In Television Or Films
Theres one glaring omission from most shows that makes this kind of makeshift study incomplete at best and harmful at worst: autistic characters. Or at least autistic characters who are more than an object of other characters pain, inspiration, and/or teachable moments. When youre learning social skills from examples that dont include anyone who is like you, theres a good chance youll come to the conclusion that theres no genuine place for you in situations like that.
At least, thats what I got from them. I became good at mimicking and accommodating allistic non-autistic people, but I didnt know how to stand up for my own needs and desires as a person. Im not entirely sure I even knew I could. I shaped myself into such a cypher that I actually made a few friends in my 20s who knew almost nothing about me after years of hanging out together.
So when I saw in Community Troy, the popular high school football hero, finding a kindred spirit in Abed and not just delighting in his differences but actually sharing a few of them, it was a revelation for me. For the first time in my life, I was seeing an outside example of how an autistic person might be able to form a mutually beneficial friendship with another person without having to fundamentally change or hide who they were.

Though the classic novel To Kill a Mockingbird and its film adaptation were written in the early 1960s, long before most people were familiar with the term autistic, hundreds of essays, articles, and blog posts have been written to discuss whether the character of Boo Radley might today be considered autistic. Boo certainly has some kind of social anxiety disorder he leaves trinkets in trees in order to let people know he likes them, he shows little feeling when he stabs someone in the leg, he likes children but not bright lights, and hes antisocial to the point that the neighbors have made up stories about him. Still, by the end of the book it is clear that hes a fundamentally good person, which makes quite the statement about those who are different, even if author Harper Lee didnt yet have a label to put on that different.

Before school begins, decide what type of communication and the frequency of communication you want with your childs teacher. A communication log may be a good method of keeping in touch with your childs teacher on a daily basis and making you feel comfortable as your child goes back to school.

Abed From Community Is My Autistic Icon
I still remember the first time I saw Rain Man. My parents put it on one day after telling me all about Dustin Hoffmans performance and how his portrayal of autism was a push forward for visibility. This was about a year after I was diagnosed myself, and I was excited to see my experiences on the screen. I remember when it finally hit us that it wasnt me being portrayed at all. It was a shell of my humanity, and I was disappointed that this was how society viewed my disability. To them, I was nothing but a shivering man in the fetal position screaming about Jeopardy. I wasnt that. I couldnt be. I revisited the film many times and have learned to enjoy it for what it was: a caricature. I moved on.
This lazy writing is how we got boring drivel like Extremely Loud & Incredibly Close or The Accountant, films that just assumed having a character divert eye contact and curl up in a corner every few scenes was enough to get us to care about them. Well, it didnt. Sure, a great movie can make up for a boring stock character , but filmmakers and showrunners dont realize that theyre shooting themselves in their own feet. To them, autism is the beginning and end of a character.
Abed is amazing. Hes hilarious, insightful, and is often framed as the one who keeps the study group together. The relationship between him and Troy is the best on the show, and the greatness of Abed comes from his autism-driven fixations.

Swimming and water play offer endless ways in which children can play, allowing you and your child to create new games and use your imaginations to explore the water.
You can investigate the buoyancy of different objects by seeing which objects sink or float. Ask your child to select some water-safe toys, and watch as the toys sink or float in the pool, water table, or shallow bin of water. Another visual, sensory activity involves dribbling a few drops of food coloring and observing how different colors diffuse in the water. For added fun, provide bubbles, sponges, or a toothbrushand watch what your child can do or create.

Join A Support Group In Your Area
With social media at our fingertips, its easier than ever for families to connect with each other to share resources, events, and contact information to set up play dates for their children. Even during times of doubt, stress, and pain, families can reach out, trade information, and rely on each other to offer a sympathetic ear and support. If youre not already active in online communities, consider joining a group for families of kids with ASD or special needs. Then, find and reach out to other families whose child have similar interests and take part in similar activities. Many kids on the spectrum enjoy, for example, Special Olympics, sensory Sundays , or social events hosted by a variety of businesses in their area.
Some of the closest friendships within the ASD community grow out of relationships among families whose children spend shared time together. If possible, find families whose children go to your childs school. This can help your child feel more comfortable at school, especially in the first days and weeks.

The Aspie Community seems to agree that, although he may not be the best known, Maurice Moss of The IT Crowd is easily one of the most researched and best portrayals of Aspergers on television. Likable, funny, and absolutely brilliant, Maurice played by Richard Ayoade often embraces his self-proclaimed weird and finds ways to appreciate his difference. As one blogger in the Aspie community mentions, is not the butt of the joke, but rather a part of the joke.

Brick Heck The Middle
The Middle is about a run-of-the-mill Midwestern family and their many exploits . The youngest son in the family is Brick who, though he has never officially been diagnosed with anything specific, has all of the tics and quirks of one on the Spectrum. Indeed, Brick has at least one blogger in the online Aspergers community convinced that someone involved in the show has an autistic kid. We dont know about that, but we do know Brick has every quality that makes an especially lovable character.

Create Social Opportunities With Siblings Or Close Family Members
In all likelihood, your child spends significant time with siblings and close family members. For this reason, family time can provide opportunities for frequent and focused learning. Activities like turn-taking, asking to borrow personal items, or various forms of play, such as pretend play, parallel play, and interactive play, can give your child a much-needed chance to practice and sharpen skills.
For instance, try setting up opportunities for your child to work on taking turns with family members. In many ways, turn-taking is an essential prerequisite for higher-level social skills like active listening and conflict resolution. A simple set up like reciprocal toy play, in which your child takes turns using a particular toy, is how most kids first learn critical social rules like making a request from peers, waiting for a turn, and allowing others to interact with a preferred item.

Salmon Fishing on the Yemen is a 2011 film about a fisheries scientist, Dr. Alfred Jones, who receives an unusual request from a wealthy sheik: bring the sport of salmon fishing to Yemen. This presents all sorts of challenges, of course, one of which is the fact that Alfred seems to lie somewhere on the Autism Spectrum. Most notably, this presents a problem as he begins to fall in love with a businesswoman played by Emily Blunt. As screenwriter Simon Beaufoy describes, is spectrum autistic, rude, humorless, apparently passionless. However, in a moment of weakness he reveals his care and love for Harriet by making her a duck sandwich.
Lars Lars And The Real Girl
This quirky Indie starring Ryan Gosling gives plenty of reasons why titular character Lars is a little bit different: his mother died giving birth to him, his anti-social father blames him for her death, his older brother leaves the family at a young age, etc. But a number of people in the Aspie community have insisted that Lars is also autistic. After all, he compares being touched to an excruciating burn-like sensation and he continuously rejects offers of social interaction. Whether autistic or not, Lars forces both his fellow characters and audiences to face exactly what it means to be different, and that all of our individual differences actually make us all quite normal.

Communicate Regularly And Respectfully
As with any relationship, communication is key. Reach out to the teacher early on, and be sure to connect consistently throughout the school year. Before you send that 50-page missive though, find out the teachers preferred method of communication. There are so many ways to be in touch these days: email, communication logs, phone calls, chatting before or after school. Some teachers even text with parents or ask that they communicate through special apps. With all of these methods, teachers can become overwhelmed, and your thoughts become less helpful and more stressful. So, however your childs teacher likes to exchange information, respect their preferences. Share your goals with the teacher and make sure you understand their expectations. And as important as it is to be thoughtful about how to best share your own thoughts, the most important piece of communication is always: LISTEN!

Aspergers in women is often much harder to detect and diagnose due to symptoms that are often subtle and widely varying, which may explain why female characters with Aspergers are so rare. But one such female Aspie is Dr. Temperance Bones Brennan on the hit crime drama Bones. Though actress Emily Deschanel and series creator Hart Hanson will only go as far as to say that Brennan almost has Aspergers, the series heroine displays a number of telltale signs: a lack of interest in being social, a sharp intellect and knack for scientific facts, and an elementary understanding of sarcasm. Aspergers or not, Brennan is easily one of the most interesting and likable characters on TV.
