Is Rocking Back and Forth a Sign of Mental Illness?

Early intervention is very important in children with autism spectrum disorder. Services such as speech therapy and behavioral and skills training are more effective if begun when a child is young.

For this reason, it is helpful to receive a diagnosis as early as possible. However, many children remain undiagnosed until they are in school. Some people are not diagnosed until they are adults.

If you suspect someone has autism, including yourself, contact a medical professional as soon as possible.

Can Headbanging Cause Brain Damage

For parents of children with autism, brain damage is a common concern if a child starts headbanging. Children under three years old will rarely cause long-term damage by headbanging. Their heads are designed to handle impact from learning to walk, and headbanging will rarely cause more trauma than a slip and fall accident at this age. However, as children get older, they are at a higher risk of causing lasting damage.

Children who are strong enough to cause injury should receive a functional behavioral intervention to come up with a plan to replace headbanging with healthy coping and communication strategies.

behaviors can be physically dangerous for the individual who is head-banging and self-injurious behavior is very concerning for their caregivers who want to keep these children safe. In order to implement a behavioral treatment plan for self-injurious behaviors, a functional behavioral assessment should be performed to help determine the environmental and/or internal factors that are maintaining the behaviors. This information is then used to inform behavioral interventions in order to preempt the causes or replace the unwanted behaviors with ones that are more acceptable, writes Minshawi.

Is Stimming Normal In Toddlers

Some forms of stimming are actually common and necessary to a child’s development. Many children suck their thumb, or rub their fingers on a favorite blanket as Carol did. All of these repetitive actions can be considered a form of stimming. They may be ways a child learns to self-sooth or keep their mind occupied.

Attachment To Unusual Interests

One of the easiest autism symptoms to detect is an intense interest in unusual objects or topics, almost to the point of obsession. For instance, an autistic individual might love trains, stamps, record players, bottle tops, or spoons. People with autism know what they like and dont care if it seems uncool. They can also be so passionate that theyll devote vast amounts of time to their interests. Frequently, they become subject matter experts on topics they enjoy. Whether drawing, cooking, video games, or chemistry, individuals with autism spend endless amounts of energy practicing their hobby. Most children and adults with autism prefer doing these interests on their own, and there is nothing wrong with that!

Knowing What To Look For With Autism

Have you ever worried that your child is exhibiting symptoms of autism, but had no one to go to and no understanding of how to acquire a diagnosis and ensure that your child will receive the help they need?

There is no need to worry, because with all of the resources out there it is always possible to determine whether your fears are worth investigating further, and you will discover that there exists many ways to help your child.

The main difficulty that arises in the diagnosis of autism is that it may take a long time to officially diagnose the disorder. Doctors do not often make a formal diagnosis until the child is two years of age, although children as young as 6 months can begin to exhibit symptoms of autism. Often it is up to parents or guardians to observe their childs behaviors, and notice and report any symptoms that they observe to their pediatrician. Remember that no person knows your child better than you do, and it is important that you advocate for your child at a time when it is not possible for them to advocate for themselves.

Please note that the following are possible early markers, but they are not diagnostic. If your child has some of these characteristics you may want to ask your pediatrician for help with a diagnosis.

Do Autistic People Outgrow Rocking

No, autistic people do not outgrow rocking. They dont outgrow stimming either.

Have you outgrown your stimming type behaviors? Its a natural thing that all people do to varying degrees.

When you ask this question though, I think what you are really asking is, will someone with autism rock less often and will it be less noticeable as they become adults.

In that case, the answer varies and is unique to each individual.

It depends on how severe the autism is, how great the need is to rock, and to a certain degree whether or not the autistic person wants to change their stimming behaviors.

Many people with high functioning autism, have learned to hide their stims in order to be more socially acceptable.

They do the things that we described earlier like tap their foot, drum their thumbs or any number of other things so that the rocking is less noticed.

Their need to rock is not reduced, their autism hasnt changed, and the act of stimming doesnt stop.

Its important to note that in this scenario, it is a conscious choice by the individual themselves and not something forced upon them.

Rocking is a way to reduce anxiety and stress, and by forcing someone to stop, or by making fun of them for doing it will only increase the stress and anxiety, and increase the need to stim.

What Are The Early Signs Of Autism In Babies

As we said, babies rocking back and forth might indicate autism in certain situations, but this is also only true if its part of a larger pattern of signs and traits.

If youre concerned that your child might have a form of autism, let a healthcare practitioner know. Theyll have a look at all your little ones language, social, and communication skills. Theyll consider things like when your child is meeting milestones and ask if theyve regressed and lost a skill they had before.

As you wait for an appointment, its a good idea to keep a diary of when the rocking are happening. Taking a video of your child while theyre rocking will also help your doctor.

What Are The Developmental Red Flags To Watch For

While there isn’t a checklist of signs that will indicate your child certainly has autism, Autism Speaks does cite each of the following “red flags” as an indicator that a child is at risk for atypical development and should have an immediate evaluation:

  • No big smiles or other warm, joyful expressions by 6 months or thereafter.
  • No back-and-forth sharing of sounds, smiles, or other facial expressions by 9 months or thereafter.
  • No babbling by 12 months.
  • No back-and-forth gestures â such as pointing, showing, reaching, or waving â by 12 months.
  • No words by 16 months.
  • No two-word meaningful phrases by 24 months.
  • Any loss of speech or babbling or social skills at any age.

Bchlorpromazine And Stereotypic Behavior

AUTISM – Rocking Stimming Infant Red Flags

At this stage, we became very interested in a single subject report by Hollis , in which chlorpromazine virtually stopped a subjectâs body rocking without affecting a learned operant response in a girl who presented with severe stereotypic behavior. As some studies suggested that stereotypic behavior may interfere with learning performance under certain circumstances , we wondered if we could reduce stereotypic behavior pharmacologically, with the possible collateral effect of increasing performance on an operant task. Our design called for the selection of subjects with very high rates of body rocking and subjects with no body rocking but high rates of aggression and other acting-out behavior . Four subjects were selected for high rates of body rocking and two were chosen for acting-out problems. Their ages ranged from 12 to 27 years, and their IQs on the Slosson Intelligence Test ranged from 9 to 16 . A double-blind, placebo-controlled, crossover design was used. Half of each group received placebo first followed by chlorpromazine, whereas the remainder received the reverse order. Based on a purported dosage study reported by Breuning , a standardized dose of 3.50 mg/kg/day chlorpromazine was adopted, and each condition was to be given for 2 weeks.

How Do You Stop Body Rocking

You can stop body rocking, head rolling, or headbanging during bedtime by making sure to avoid paying any attention to their behavior, this will only encourage them. Also, ensure to remove all hard surfaces and bedside table from near your childs bed. Ensure that the bed is way away from the walls too.

Signs Of Autism In Adults

Autism spectrum disorder is a lifelong condition and some people with autism spectrum disorder are not diagnosed until they are adults. This could be because they fall into the higher functioning range of the autism spectrum and their symptoms are less severe, or because they were misdiagnosed with a condition such as attention deficit hyperactivity disorder or obsessive compulsive disorder.

Although treatment can improve some outward symptoms, people with autism will always process sensations such as sound, sight, touch and smell in different ways.

Autism is a spectrum condition, which means that adults will have different experiences of day-to-day living. An adult with mild symptoms, who is towards the higher functioning range of the autism spectrum, may:

  • Have difficulties with social interactions
  • Avoid making eye contact
  • Not understand nonverbal facial or body gestures, such as frowning or shrugging
  • Not understand changes in tone of voice, such as sarcasm
  • Be comforted by rules and routine
  • Get upset at changes to routines
  • Be under- or over-sensitive to loud noises, strong smells or tastes
  • Engage in repetitive behaviors, such as pacing or hand flapping
  • Have a narrow range of interests
  • Have a good memory and recall of facts

An adult who is towards the lower functioning range of the autism spectrum may:

One common sign of autism spectrum disorder in adults is anxiety. Signs of anxiety can include:

  • Irritability

Autism And Social Disconnection In Interpersonal Rocking

A defining characteristic of autism spectrum disorder involves impairments in connecting with others, including impaired verbal and non-verbal communication, and lack of imitation and social reciprocity . Early accounts of explaining such deficits seemed to partition off such deficits from perceptuo-motoric problems that also frequently occur , focusing instead on cognitive or motivational accounts of the social deficits. Because many social abilities such as pretend play with others can involve complex skills , it has been suggested that children with ASD might have a theory of mind deficit . Although embodied simulation accounts that arose from research on mirror neuron processes seem to give credence to theory of mind accounts, empirical evidence has failed to corroborate the role of deficiencies in these processes in the emergence of social deficits .

In the current study we extended the rocking chair paradigm to children by assessing rocking behavior during a natural interaction with their caregiver. We predicted that children without ASD would show significantly more in-phase rocking behavior than children with ASD.

Noticing Early Warning Signs Of Autism

Autism Diagnosis

Everyone tells us not to compare our child with others, whether to our own or someone elses children, but how can we say we dont notice any differences, if were really being honest? We cant just ignore their development and tell ourselves, Theyll talk when theyre ready and similar statements. Sure, every baby is different, and some develop more quickly or slowly for non-concerning reasons. How are we supposed to know when to worry?

The key here is looking for a pattern. If your child does one or two things that seem a bit strange to you, that may not necessarily be reason to send up red flags. On the other hand, if you are noticing that your baby isnt hitting multiple milestones, or has several very strange behaviors, thats a good reason to check in with their pediatrician. Here are some of the common early warning signs of autism to be watching for around 12-18 months and beyond.

  • Signs Of Autism In Girls

The ratio of boys to girls diagnosed with autism spectrum disorder is 4:1. However, there is some evidence that autism is going undiagnosed in girls, particularly those who are at the higher functioning end of the spectrum.

There is discussion around whether girls and women with autism may display different symptoms to boys and men, and that the current diagnostic criteria may be biased towards boys and stereotypical male behavior. Girls and women may also be better able to mask difficulties with social interactions than boys, and this may delay a diagnosis. New diagnostic criteria may be needed to assess ASD in girls and women. Past theories, including controversies such as the extreme male brain, may have led to under-referral and under-diagnosis of autism spectrum disorder in girls and women.

Signs that a girl may have autism include:

    • Difficulties with social interactions however, differences from typical autism symptoms may include:
    • Better grasp of emotions and ability to make friends than boys
    • May mask lack of intuitive understanding of social situations by repeating role-plays seen in real life or film/television
    • May be able to make friends but find difficulty keeping them
  • Intense focus on particular topics differences in gender may be expressed as a focus on trains or dinosaurs for boys, and celebrities or animals for girls,
  • Fewer repetitive behaviors and gestures than boys, or may have different gestures than boys

Whats The Reason Behind This Pendulum

The act of rocking back and forth or, body rocking, extends beyond the realm of mental illness. For instance, the gentle rocking of a cradle soothes newborns and babies. Additionally, as bone, joint, and muscle pain increase with age, we can find relief in the form of rocking chairs. In fact, certain animals, including elephants, sometimes move their bodies from side to side to alleviate pain or distress.

Though it may appear primitive, rocking triggers the brain the release of endorphins, the feel-good chemical. Exercise, aromas, certain foods, and even music can also release endorphins. David Givens, the author of the Nonverbal Dictionary, states that rocking, whether back and forth or side to side, stimulates the vestibular senses, referring to parts of the inner ear and brain that regulate balance and eye movements. These senses are closely aligned with the part of the brain that manages pain and stress.

Abnormal movement can be a symptom of various mental health disorders. There are many types of movement disorders, but stereotyped movements or stereotypes are most commonly seen in mental health disorders. Illnesses including schizophrenia, autism, OCD, addiction and other neurological disorders may present with unusual or stereotyped movements.

Changes in a neurotransmitter called dopamine cause most movement disorders. Excess of dopamine may cause stereotyped movements and decreased dopamine may lead to Parkinsonian type symptoms.

What Is The Appropriate Treatment Option

Biological, behavioral, and environmental factors all contribute to rocking and other stereotypic movements. As such, diagnoses for an underlying disorder must be made on a case-by-case basis. There are several different options for the treatment of a mental health disorder such as schizophrenia and autism including medication, individualized therapy, counseling, and education.

Dr. Kelly Ownby, Medical Director at Smoky Mountain Lodge, says When it comes to illness and your loved one, the whole process can be overwhelming. As a parent, trust your gut. If you think something is wrong or seems unusual, dont be afraid to consult the opinion of your health care provider. Unfortunately, most mental health conditions are progressive which means the earlier the symptoms are recognized and the sooner the appropriate treatment is started, the better the prognosis.

At Pasadena Villa, we create a comforting and therapeutic environment for those who have a mental illness. We believe in treating all residents with compassion, and our programs are designed in ways that preserve and protect their dignity. We do common activities that many families do. Our staff and residents learn and model appropriate social, communication and life skills, from daily personal hygiene habits and etiquette during mealtimes, to many fun and relaxing social and recreational activities.

What About Other Scenarios Involving Rocking

What about on a plane or bus ride? While I agree that other people can stare and talk all they want and Ill just brush it off as rudeness and ignorance, is it fair to other people if my son is so distracting that it is disruptive to them for an extended period of time?

And what about the autistic persons own personal thoughts?

What if they are personally embarrassed because they rock and people stare, or it makes it harder for them to make friends and they wish they could stop?

In cases like that, it would be perfectly acceptable and potentially beneficial to teach someone to redirect their stimming in other ways.

Notice I am saying redirect and not stop.

There is absolutely nothing wrong with stimming, or rocking as a form of stimming, and as I have pointed out, we ALL do it to varying degrees.
