High Blood Pressure Drugs: Tips And Precautions
When taking one of these meds for your ADHD, be sure to tell your doctor if you:
- Are nursing, pregnant, or plan to become pregnant

- Have any medical problems now or in the past, including low blood pressure, seizures, heart rhythm disturbances, and urinary problems

Data Sources And Study Population
Data were obtained from 4 registers in Sweden: the Medical Birth Register , the Prescribed Drug Register , the Swedish Neonatal Quality Register , and the Perinatal Revision South Register . We identified singleton births recorded in the MBR between July 1, 2006, and December 31, 2014. Linkage from the MBR to the other registers was achieved via Swedish personal identification numbers, which are assigned to each resident in the country. The study design is displayed in .
The MBR comprises data on antenatal care, delivery, and pediatric examination of the newborn infant for > 97% of all births in Sweden. Furthermore, the MBR includes information on gestational length, birth weight, Apgar scores, congenital malformations, and neonatal diagnoses from delivery and neonatal records. Gestational age is in > 95% of the pregnancies in Sweden, based on ultrasound estimation. Congenital malformations and other neonatal diagnoses are coded in the MBR according to the International Classification of Diseases, 10th Revision . The data are reported from the clinics to the MBR no later than 1 month after the birth of the child.

Women on medication for attention deficit hyperactivity disorder should not stop treatment without consulting a doctor, say the authors of a new study examining pregnancy outcomes among women treated with ADHD medications.
Published today in CNS Drugs the study of 5,056 Australian women and their newborns is the largest of its kind to assess the impact of ADHD and commonly prescribed stimulant medications on mothers and their babies born between 1994 and 2012.
The study led by the University of Sydney, assessed the impacts of ADHD and its treatment on outcomes including: spontaneous labour , caesarean delivery, active neonatal resuscitation, premature birth , and a 1-minute Apgar score less than seven .
The researchers compared these outcomes in a control group, that is, the babies and pregnancy outcomes of women who did not have ADHD and who were not treated with medications for ADHD.
This meant the researchers could determine whether ADHD, its treatment with stimulant medication, or both might adversely affect pregnancy outcomes.
Is A Stimulant Or Non Stimulant Better For Treating Adhd
The choice of non-stimulant vs stimulant medication is a personal decision between doctors and patients and requires shared decision making. While stimulant medications have been shown to be more efficacious for ADHD treatment for symptoms such as agitation and concentration, it is up to the doctor and patient to come to a consensus on what the best treatment is on an individual basis.1
Some reasons you and your physician may choose a non-stimulant over stimulant medication include:

Two pink lines on the pregnancy test came with more than the usual dread for me. They signaled another kid, yes, but so much more was at stake.
I have attention deficit hyperactivity disorder, or ADHD. Usually, I take Strattera, a stimulant to kick my stimulus-seeking brain into semi-normal function, and Wellbutrin, an anti-depressant for the mood, depression, and anxiety symptoms. The mix helps me focus, chase the depression away, and kick the anxiety back into the dark corner where it belongs.
These are some serious drugs that have not been properly tested in pregnancy. You have to stop taking them. Now. Today. My obstetrician explained.
What?! I wanted to yell and cry. Clearly, she didnt understand. Not taking my medication was NOT an option.
Without medication to treat ADHD, depression, and anxiety, I stay up all hours of the night worried about strange scenarios that are too wild to ever come true, but not too wild to entertain my conscious at 3 a.m. I start fifty thousand things only to finish after wasting a tremendous amount of time and money, or never finish at all. What Are The Side Effects Of Strattera
The most common side effects in children and adolescents are:
- Upset stomach .
These side effects can be significant and may require stopping the medication.
However in most cases, these side effects are generally not severe. Only a very small percentage of patients needed to stop Strattera due to side effects experienced during clinical trials.
Allergic reactions to Strattera are rare but do occur, usually as swelling or hives. Tell your provider right away if you or your family member taking Strattera develops a skin rash, swelling, hives or other allergic symptoms.
There have been reports of slightly decreased growth in children and teens taking Strattera. It’s recommended that children and adolescents be observed, measured and weighed periodically while on Strattera.
Strattera should be stopped if you have signs of jaundice yellowing of the skin or whites of the eyes. Jaundice is a sign of liver damage. Itching, right upper belly pain, dark urine and unexplained flu-like symptoms may also be signs of liver injury. If blood tests show evidence of liver damage, stop taking Strattera.
Strattera can increase suicidal thinking in teens who take the drug. Patients should be monitored for suicidal thoughts and actions while taking Strattera®.
Strattera should be discontinued if symptoms of psychosis or mania occur.
Aggressive or hostile behavior may occur. Therefore, monitoring for this type of behavior during Strattera therapy is recommended.
