Limited Or No Response To Their Name

Early Signs of Autism Video Tutorial | Kennedy Krieger Institute

At 6 months , most infants show an awareness of their own names, especially when its spoken by their mother.

Autistic infants show a developmental difference: By 9 months, many babies who later develop ASD dont orient to their own names. say this usually appears as a pattern of nonresponse, rather than a single instance.

Parent: Child Seemed Normal

Jennifer Maloni’s already had a child with autism. Dominic’s odd behavior — instead of playing with his toy cars, he’d line them up in order of size — led to a relatively early autism diagnosis at age 21 months. At that time, her second son, Dylan, was 6 months old.

Knowing Dylan was at increased risk of autism, the Mt. Airy, Md., resident enrolled him in Landa’s study when he was 13 months old. His first evaluation indicated he had autism. By age 18 months, he was diagnosed.

“Dylan was very different from Dominic — his signs of autism were very, very subtle,” Maloni tells WebMD. “If I hadn’t had him in a study where they watched him for hours on end, they would not have picked up on it. I was able to get early intervention for him right away.”

Autism clearly has a strong genetic component. But genes aren’t destiny, Landa says.

“Your brain development isn’t just engineered by your genetics. Your experience plays a role in your outcome,” Landa says. “So if a toddler isn’t attending to social cues and develops these patterns of behavior that make it hard to engage with others, the child isn’t getting learning opportunities. It becomes a vicious cycle. We want to disrupt this cycle, to teach children how to engage with objects in diverse ways. We teach them to have joint interactions with people that are rewarding.”

It isn’t easy. Maloni says she tries to engage her sons in social play “every waking moment.” But the results are more than rewarding.

Checklists Of Autism Signs

Through its Learn the Signs. Act Early campaign, the CDC aims to raise awareness of the early signs of developmental delay, including autism. Through a series of milestone checklists, the CDC provides information on what most babies do at different ages and which signs parents should discuss with their childs doctor. Milestones are included for children 2 months to 5 years of age, reflecting a belief among researchers that even infants may show early autism signs.

Early signs of autism or other developmental delays include the following:

The Importance Of Early Diagnosis

The American Academy of Pediatrics joins with the CDC in recommending screening at a young age to ensure early intervention and better developmental outcomes. In the U.S., the majority of autism costs are for adult rather than child services . With early diagnosis and treatment, the cost of care over a lifetime can be reduced by two-thirds.

The Importance Of Early Intervention

12 Warning Signs of Autism in 1

The earlier autism is diagnosed, the sooner educational and behavioral interventions can start and the more likely the child is to develop coping and management skills for handling the disorder more successfully.

Without question, early intervention and treatment improve overall quality of life and help children to function better. They can even help to reduce and minimize specific symptoms of autism spectrum disorder, the American Psychological Association publishes.

While there is no cure for autism, symptoms can be managed effectively with the right treatment. Autism wont be officially diagnosed in a baby, but if you notice early warning signs, talk to your pediatrician, regardless of your childs age.

You will continue to monitor these signs as your child grows, and you may get an official diagnosis when your child is closer to 2 years old. Your early observations can mean an early diagnosis, helping your child to get vital treatment services sooner.

THIS ARTICLE IS MORE THAN FIVE YEARS OLD

This article is more than five years old. Autism research – and science in general – is constantly evolving, so older articles may contain information or theories that have been reevaluated since their original publication date.

Baby boys who will later be diagnosed with autism show a loss of interest in other peoples eyes between 2 and 6 months of age, according to a study published today in Nature1. This is the earliest behavioral marker of autism found to date.

The researchers found that the steeper the decline in eye fixation over the first two years of life, the greater the level of social and communication impairment at 2 years old.

Now we know that it is possible to develop a quantitative assay in early infancy that is predictive of both autism and level of social disability, says lead investigator Ami Klin, director of the Marcus Autism Center in Atlanta, Georgia.

The study is the latest in a surge of research on the younger siblings of children with autism, dubbed baby sibs, who have a one in five chance of developing the disorder.

Researchers have found that some baby sibs have distinctive brain-wave patterns and a loss of interest in faces beginning as early as 6 months of age. The new study uncovers changes in brain development even earlier.

Development Of Infants With Early Signs Of Autism

While your baby is growing up, you may wonder if they are developing as they should. There are certain developmental milestones children hit as they grow up.

It is important to keep an eye out for these so that you can see if your child is behind on their development.

  • smile at people
  • try to look at their parents
  • coo
  • turn their head towards sound

If you notice that your baby is not engaging in such activities, you may want to get your child tested for ASD.

What Are The Early Signs Of Autism In Babies And Toddlers

Recognizing that every infant is different from every other infant and that some of the signs of autism may be present in infants who may have other disabilities or even in infants who may turn out not to have any disability, there are some signs that warrant a discussion with a pediatrician and a possible closer look at the infants overall development.

Strong Interest In Unusual Sensory Experiences

Early signs of autism studied in infants

Babies with autism can show very strong interest in unusual sensory experiences, such as excessive rubbing of certain textures, looking out the side of their eye or closely inspecting a block or toy train as it rolls by, or licking objects.

If your child shows strong interest in unusual sensory experiences, this may be an early sign of autism.

Rarely Shares Their Interests With You

Babies are eager to share their interests with you, first with gestures like showing and pointing, and then with sounds and words.

Notice what your baby is paying attention to to figure out what theyre interested in.

If your baby rarely their interests with you, this can be an early sign of autism.

The Early Signs Of Autism Unfold From 9 To 16 Months

The early signs of autism are easy to miss. Autism can be diagnosed by 18-24 months but its not usually diagnosed until 4-5 years.

This article illustrates 16 early signs of autism that unfold from 9-16 months to help you detect autism before it’s usually diagnosed.

Diagnosing autism can be difficult because there are no medical or blood tests. The diagnosis is based on behavioral symptoms or features.

The American Academy of Pediatrics recommends that all children be screened for autism at 18 and 24 months. Autism can be diagnosed by 18-24 months, but its not usually diagnosed until 4-5 years.

The early signs of autism can have a cascading effect on brain development and lead to significant social, language, and cognitive deficits, as well as challenging behaviors, if theyre not caught early.

Early Signs Of Autism In Preschool Kids

You may notice differences in your childs behaviors and communication right before they go to school. Some of these signs may mean that your kid is at risk for autism spectrum disorder. Here are some of the signs listed by CDC:

  • Speaking less than 15 words
  • Seeming confused by the function of everyday items
  • Not responding to their name when called
  • Not walking
  • Has repetitive behaviors like rocking back and forth

Most girls show symptoms in infancy or early childhood. But they may not be recognized.

Some studies suggest that certain symptoms are seen more commonly in boys than in girls. Repetitive behaviors, for instance, may appear more often in boys. They are easier to spot.

In addition, girls deal with ASD differently than boys. They may hide their symptoms or spend more energy on adapting to social norms.

They are more able to form friendships. This may cause ASD to not be determined early on.

What Parents Can Do

Wang and Kasari advise parents to keep an eye out for these common red flags starting around the time their baby is 12 months old, and to talk to their pediatrician if they have any concerns. As a preliminary tool, parents can also use the M-CHAT test to determine whether their child might need professional help.

“We want parents to know if they’re suspecting a developmental problem that there’s help out there,” Kasari said. “And there’s also hope. These kind of interventions really can make a difference.”

Behavioural Signs In Infants Between 6 And 12 Months Can Predict Asd

A 2005 Canadian study published in the International Journal of Developmental Neuroscience, with over 200 participants was the first to pinpoint specific behavioural signs in infants as young as 12 months that can predict, with remarkable accuracy, whether a child will develop autism.

Autism is one of the most prevalent disorders today, and while a bio marker was finally found last year to help with early diagnosis, its normally only 80% effective, and so far mostly being used on higher risk infants. Also it is found using an MRI, and wait times can be long. Most doctors instead must rely on parent observations, observing the child themselves, and using standardized tools like the Checklist for Autism in Toddlers . However these tools are made for children who are 18 months and older, a long time especially when early detection and intervention can help with many of the frustrations that develop from communication problems.

Because of the research done, a scale was developed to help doctors with early assessment in infants as young as 6 months . The Autism Observation Scale for Infants has been a fantastic new tool to help parents and doctors get an early diagnosis.

Behaviour: Early Signs Of Autism

Signs of autism in children aged 12 â 18 months

Repetitive and restricted interests If young children are autistic, they might:

  • have an intense interest in certain objects and get stuck on particular toys or objects for example, theyll flick the light switch off and on repeatedly, or play only with cars or dolls
  • interact with toys and objects in limited ways for example, they might mainly spin the wheels of a toy car rather than pretending to drive the car along the floor, or take the clothes on and off a doll repeatedly
  • be very interested in certain objects or activities and get upset if they cant do that activity for example, watching the same TV show over and over
  • focus narrowly on objects and activities, like lining up objects or putting toys into a pile.

RoutinesIf young children are autistic, they might be easily upset by change and need to follow routines. For example, they might need to follow the same route to child care or a grandparents house every time.

Repetitive movementsIf young children are autistic, they might repeat body movements or have unusual body movements, like back-arching, hand-flapping, arm-stiffening and walking on the tips of their toes.

Sensory sensitivitiesIf young children are autistic, they might:

Restricted Or Repetitive Behaviors Or Interests

People with ASD have behaviors or interests that can seem unusual. These behaviors or interests set ASD apart from conditions defined by problems with social communication and interaction only.

Examples of restricted or repetitive behaviors and interests related to ASD can include

  • Lines up toys or other objects and gets upset when order is changed
  • Repeats words or phrases over and over
  • Plays with toys the same way every time
  • Is focused on parts of objects
  • Gets upset by minor changes
  • Has obsessive interests
  • Flaps hands, rocks body, or spins self in circles
  • Has unusual reactions to the way things sound, smell, taste, look, or feel

Little Or No Imitatin Other People Of Pretending

They use a variety of functional actions like putting a sippy cup in their mouth to drink and a spoon in their mouth to eat.

From this, they learn to pretend in play they may offer you a sip with a cup or bottle, give Teddy bear a hug and cover him with a blanket or jiggle a pan with invisible stuff inside to pretend to cook.

Children with autism usually have strengths in using objects in solitary play.

If your child is showing little or no imitating of others, and is not beginning to pretend in play, it can be an early sign of autism.
