This is simply gentle pressure distributed evenly across the body that produces a calming effect. DPT offers the same benefit you would get from a hug or a massage, but it works well for autistic individuals who have trouble with physical touch. Weighted blankets apply gentle pressure that calms the nervous system and releases serotonin to alleviate some of the anxiety that many autistic individuals experience especially at night.

When we apply a weighted blanket or vest, the body releases oxytocin in the same sense way as it does when we are hugged or held like a baby. While some people are open to being hugged, those with autism or sensory processing issues may not be and so this kind of blanket is an ideal thing to use.

But Does It Really Help Improve Sleep

Weighted blankets, lap pads helping people with autism, anxiety and attention disorders

The short answer: maybe. Few studies on the use of weighted blankets for autistic children have been completed, so it is hard to definitively say, Yes, this works! A 2015 study on adults receiving inpatient mental health treatment revealed a 60% reduction in anxiety when using a 30-pound weighted blanket. This study did not look at sleep or autism, but suggests that weighted blankets do produce a calming effect. On the other hand, a 2014 randomized controlled trial on autistic children revealed that total sleep time did not change when using a weighted blanket. Despite this, the children in the study reported that they liked the blanket, and their parents tended to report that they seemed to sleep better. Ultimately, more research is needed to support the effectiveness of weighted blankets. All that being said, nothing in the research indicates that weighted blankets for autism are harmful if used correctly. If your child likes it, use it!

What About Weighted Vests

Toddler, 5 Pound Weighted Blanket, 28x32, 5 Pounds, For autism, SPD ...

Weighted vests are designed to be worn over the top of clothing. These can work better than shoulder pads, as they dont fall off. Again, they can be helpful for some children but not others. You must ensure the vest is the right size and weight for the child. Some children also prefer the squeeze vests / bear hugs rather than weighted vests. If there is a likelihood the vest will be thrown, then the weight free ones are also a better option.

It is also important to consider the childs overall mobility and joint stability when using these. If a child has very low tone, i.e. they are quite floppy a weighted vest may not be the best solution for them. The squeeze vests are likely a better option. You should seek guidance from your occupational therapist.
