Testing A New Approach

Supplements, Vitamins and probiotics for Autism || Probiotics in ASD

Members of our team have already studied stool and mucous microbiome communities in children with autism, and evaluated the same probiotic mix for treating irritable bowel syndrome. For our upcoming study, following the pilot we are currently doing, we will evaluate the probiotics impact on easing GI symptoms in kids with autism, and how well it helps control their anxiety and over-sensitivity to stimuli. We hope to treat 60 children, aged 3 to 12, divided among three institutions. To our knowledge, the study will be the first to evaluate probiotics as a treatment for both physical and emotional conditions in children with autism.

Autism is a complex and challenging condition, with multiple, interconnected symptoms. However, we are hopeful that probiotics and a better understanding of the microbiome will help patients overcome some of autisms most pervasive impacts, improving quality of life for patients and their parents.

Treatments Of The Antibiotics Groups

Animals have been divided randomly into four groups: 1. Control group 2. Antibiotics treated group 3. Antibiotics and probiotic treated group 4. Probiotic treated group . To effectively deplete the gut microbiota the rats of the antibiotics treated groups received broad-spectrum antibiotics mixture for 4 weeks in adult animals . The antibiotics cocktail was dissolved in their drinking water to avoid any chronic stress-induced adverse effects. The antibiotics mixture was chosen based on published protocols, consisted of ampicillin , vancomycin , ciprofloxacin HCl , imipenem and metronidazole . This antibiotics cocktail was replaced by freshly made cocktail every 3 days. Probiotic treated and control animals received tap water in the absence of any antibiotics which was also changed every 3 days. to exclude possible behavior changes due to antibiotics-induced intestinal discomfort or pain, detailed in the Supplementary Information Supplementary Table ) After this antibiotics exposure in the ABx+probiotic group, and the probiotic group were given our PM of specified cfu/d , oral gavage every day for 2 weeks. Throughout the whole experiment water and food consumption were measured every day and the animals weights were measured every 3 days. Fresh faecal pellets were collected every week for monitoring the alterations of the SCFAs. Behavioral tests started after the treatments.

The trial group got a probiotic complement with the species Lactobacillus plantarum while youngsters within the different group got placebos . The trial was imagined to proceed this fashion for 3 weeks, earlier than the teams would swap dietary supplements and proceed as such for an additional three weeks. New Study Shows Probiotics May Prevent Adhd And Autism Spectrum Disorders

Introduction:

There is a growing amount of medical research indicating that alterations in the type of bacteria that live in our gastrointestinal tract can influence brain function, mood and overall mental health. A new study from Finland is the first to show that probiotic supplementation early in life may be an effective way to reduce the rising tide of brain disorders in children, such as attention deficit hyperactivity disorder and autism spectrum disorders. Background Data:

Gastrointestinal disturbances are very common in children with brain disorders such as attention deficit hyperactivity disorder and autism spectrum disorders including Aspergers syndrome . A number of mechanisms have been suggested linking these brain disorders as well as some of the common digestive disturbances these kids experience to alterations in the gut bacteria.

Lastly, a recent study in healthy women showed that supplementation with a mixture of probiotic bacteria had significant effects on brain regions that control central processing of emotion and sensation indicating that the probiotic bacteria themselves may be capable of exerting beneficial effects directly on brain function and mood.

New Data:

The researchers concluded Probiotic supplementation early in life may reduce the risk of neuropsychiatric disorder development later in childhood possible by mechanisms not limited to gut microbiota composition.

What Do Our Findings Mean

Our findings have important implications for the autism community.

First, microbiome interventions for autism, such as faecal microbiota transplants, should be viewed with caution. Our findings suggest they are unlikely to be effective and may do more harm than good.

Our study also draws attention to the importance of diet for children on the autism spectrum. Poor diet in children and young people is a major public health concern in Australia, with important implications for their well-being, development and health conditions such as obesity.

We need to do more to support families at mealtimes, in particular for families with autistic children, rather than resorting to fad therapies that may do more harm than good.

Bacteria Strains Plus Fos Normalize Microbiome Gi Function Neurotransmitters & Behaviors In Children

A new study1 confirms differences in gut microbiome composition between autistic children and typically developing children, and has reported improvement in autism symptomatology with a probiotic/prebiotic treatment. Improvements were seen in gut microbiome diversity, metabolites and function, as well as autism behaviors and neurotransmitters.

The microbiome and brain have ongoing bidirectional communications, and each affects the others health and function. Many individuals with autism spectrum disorder have dysbiosis2, or a persistent imbalance of the guts microbial community, with resulting leaky gut and alterations in metabolites such as short chain fatty acids that impact brain function and behavior. Probiotics and prebiotics may help to normalize gut microbiota and act via the gut-brain axis to influence neurotransmission and psychological conditions.

Probiotics3 are live organisms, usually bacteria, that confer health benefits, particularly to the gut. Prebiotics4 are specialized plant fibers that stimulate the growth of healthy bacteria in the gut. This study utilized a mixture of four probiotic strains Bifidobacterium infantis Bi-26, Lactobacillus rhamnosus HN001, Bifidobacterium lactis BL-04, and Lactobacillus paracasei LPC-37 at a dose of 1010 CFUs per day. Fructo-oligosaccharides , a prebiotic5, was added to the probiotics to stimulate their growth in the colon.

Which Probiotics To Take

Probiotic Essentials Powder for Children with Autism and ADHD My ...

by Karen Thomas | Apr 4, 2017 | Muscle Testing, PANDAS/PANS, Probiotics |

We have over 100 trillion bacteria in our gut. They are, or should be, mostly good bacteria. A common term known when one has an overgrowth of bad bacteria is yeast overgrowth, or candida flare up. We need to increase the number of good bacteria coming into the body so they can help colonize, yes colonize, and grow their numbers. This, in turn, helps to crowd out the bad bacteria or overgrowth that can cause issues of digestion, inflammation, mood swings, fatigue, trouble sleeping, and an inability to focus.

Probiotics help to keep the balance in your digestive tract, strengthen the immune system, and feed your brain too. The brain is directly affected by the gut and the microbes in it. If the gut is weak it affects the ability of neurotransmitters such as serotonin, dopamine and GABA from being created. These neurotransmitters affect mood, sleep, appetite, ability to focus, and stay calm.

Knowing which probiotic formula to take can be daunting. It is a mass of unknown products to most people. Quality is key, so choosing the right company and the right formula for your needs is essential. You will also see something referred to as colony forming units . This refers to the number of bacteria in the product. Most doctors say you should have, at least, 40 billion CFUs, but this varies greatly due to age and need.

Can Probiotics Help Your Child With Autism Feel Better

By L. Eugene Arnold, MD, MEd

As a parent, it can be difficult to watch your child struggle with the abdominal pain, constipation, and other discomfort common for people with autism. Too often, those gastrointestinal symptoms are accompanied by increased anxiety and oversensitivity.

However, recent research into microbiomes may help. Microbiomes are the colonies of bacteria within and around us that affect our bodily functions, and by altering their makeupadding friendly bacteria to outcompete those causing gas and other symptomswe can improve digestion, ease GI symptoms, and even improve our moods. Relief for some symptoms may be as simple as introducing beneficial bacteria into the diet, with grocery-store staples like yogurt or yogurt drinks like Kefir.

My colleagues and I at The Ohio State University Wexner Medical Centers Nisonger Center are trying to determine if children with autism can feel better and be less anxious by simply consuming a well-studied mix of helpful bacteria. We soon hope to expand our study to other sites that will hopefully treat those two frustrating conditions without the need for new medications.

Things To Look For In A Probiotic Supplement:

  • Contain at least 10 billion CFU – since our gut has billions or trillions of living bacteria at any given time, it is important to supplement with dosages high enough to make an impact, especially if your child is experiencing GI symptoms. Shoot for 10 billion or higher to start with.

  • Contain at least 5 strains of bacteria – Like we discussed above, the key with gut bacteria is balance, so we want a variety of different bacteria.

  • Third-party tested – It is important to know what is in your supplement, so third party testing is vital to ensure your probiotic is active and has the bacteria in the amounts listed on the package.

  • Strains to look for

  • Lactobacillus acidophilus, rhamnosus GG, reuteri

  • Saccharomyces boulardii

  • Not my preferred option, but your child needs a gummy for sensory reasons, this is an option that is easy to find in most stores. I prefer the adult version as it is the same formulation as the kids but provides 7 billion CFU for 2 gummies.

Potential Effect Of Probiotics To Treat Ibs

Irritable bowel syndrome is a gastrointestinal disorder that is often found in individuals with autism as a comorbidity . Signs and symptoms include diarrhea, constipation, and abdominal discomfort that usually improves after passing stool. Interestingly, anxiety disorders, such as sleep difficulties, anxiety, depression, and headache are also found among people with gastrointestinal diseases, thus illustrating the gutbrain axis relationship. No consensus has yet been reached in finding specific taxonomic prints of these disorders, as taxonomic studies are slowly moving toward metabolomic studies .

Although probiotics have exhibited an effect on IBS symptoms, it has been shown that multi-strain probiotic treatment compared to placebo and mono-strain probiotic treatment has more benefits in alleviating IBS symptoms . However, a major problem with studies reporting the use of probiotics as a safe therapy is their small sample size, which does not enable a conclusion but rather suggests a trend. Finally, studies have shown robust evidence that probiotics are effective for acute infectious diarrhea, antibiotic-associated diarrhea, Clostridium difficile-associated diarrhea, which is one of the problems in ASD, irritable bowel syndrome, and functional gastrointestinal disorders .

Autism & Gut Health Are Closely Linked

Study looking at affects of probiotics on those with autism

Some recent medical studies have found some differences between the gut microbiomes of people with autism and neurotypical individuals. People with autism, including children, tend to have less diverse gut flora. There doesnt appear to be a connection between the diversity of the gut biome and the severity of autism.

People with autism may benefit from adding probiotic supplements to their diet. For children who struggle with food aversions, taking these supplements in place of eating fermented foods may work better to ensure they have a more diverse microbiome.

A 2016 medical study surveyed gastrointestinal issues in children with autism and examined whether probiotics could help. The results did not show behavioral improvements after probiotic treatment, but the researchers concluded that a larger study could give more conclusive evidence in favor of this option.

Another parent, Corinne Yeo, tried to start her ten-year-old son on probiotics last year, but she said it did not work out.

My son has very sensitive taste buds so he only drinks ice cold water, she said. We bought tasteless, odourless and colourless probiotics, but hes so sensitive he can detect them even when we mix in very small amounts into his water, and he would refuse to drink it.

She added that she recently decided to try again, and was surprised when her son started taking the probiotics. She has, however, not seen any effects so far.

    DOING EVERYTHING THEY CAN

For parents like Mrs Yee and Mdm Yeo, the experimentation with probiotics is but one small part of their overall efforts at managing their childrens autism. And it does not come cheap.

Mrs Yee spends about S$5,000 a month on things ranging from therapy, biomedical treatment to ordering probiotics online. She had also tried out speech therapy when Nicholas was first diagnosed, but found that it was not very effective.

Nonetheless, she says it is money well spent.

Its costly to maintain all these expenses but I think its essential, she explained. To me, these are critical interventions that parents can do to help a child who is delayed in his development.

She added that the improvements she has seen in her son over the years are significant. When he was younger, I would never have dreamed than my son would be able to cope with the mainstream curriculum, but here he is now.
