How To Train A Service Dog For Autism

Autism Assistance Dogs Ireland : Make a gift in honour of someone special

If you are looking to train a service dog for autism, there are a few things to keep in mind. First, it is important to start with basic obedience training. This will help your dog learn the basics of commands and how to follow them. Once your dog has a good understanding of obedience, you can begin to work on specific tasks that will be helpful for your autistic child. Some of these tasks may include helping with anxiety, providing comfort and support, and assisting with communication. It is important to work with a professional trainer who can help you customize a training program for your specific needs. With patience and consistency, you can help your dog become a valuable asset to your family.

A dog trained to assist children with autism works with a team leader usually a parent wearing a wire harness discreetly attached to each child. In addition, dogs are trained to give calming effects through their head or entire body, as well as how to be a part of a strategy for controlling repetitive behaviors. Dogs for Good trains autism assistance dogs at a high level of socialisation and training for nearly two years. Throughout the training process, each family devotes an equal amount of time and energy to teaching and caring for their dog. We have assisted over 1,200 families thus far, which is a testament to our dedication.

Things To Consider Before Getting A Service Dog For Autism

Service dogs for both children and adults on the Autism spectrum are becoming more prevalent as people see how beneficial they can be to those who require extra support. Dogs were once only considered as a help for those who were visually impaired. Now they are expanding their repertoires by aiding those who have not only physical disabilities but mental and psychological ones as well.

For those on the Autism spectrum, a service dog can be a huge benefit. However, getting a service dog requires time, commitment, and money. Some things should be considered before you make the final decision to get a service dog for Autism.

What To Consider Before Adopting

Before bringing home a pet, there are some important things to think about. First of all, who is the pet for? If it is for a child, you may want to consider getting a large breed.

Large breed dogs tend to be better at putting up with awkward hugs, jostling, and other types of touch that could actually be painful or intimidating for a smaller dog.

Of course, no matter what breed or size of dog you get, you should always supervise a child to ensure that they are not putting themselves in harms way by surpassing the dogs tolerance for unwanted touch. While many dogs are friendly and patient, theyll only put up with unpleasant stimuli for so long make sure children are respectful!

Other factors to consider are things like energy level, coat type, and grooming needs. Do you have time to exercise a high-energy breed? Are you okay with shedding? Can you afford to pay a groomer to maintain your dogs coat on a regular basis? With these things in mind, lets look at some great breeds for autism!

Provide Prescription Medication Reminders

People with autism may have additional mental health conditions, some of which require prescription medications. Whether it’s anti-anxiety medication to soothe anxiety symptoms, a sleep disorder prescription, or anti-depressants, a range of medications may be prescribed to alleviate some of the conditions linked to autism. Because of the importance of medication in helping people with autism, autism service dogs are often trained to remind their owners about taking essential prescriptions. In the event of a panic attack or another psychiatric episode, the dog may even bring the necessary medications to their owner!

How To Get An Autism Service Dog

A dog can become an autism service dog if it meets the requirements as set forth by the ADA. The service dog needs to be trained and focused on the job, oftentimes be alert 24/7 and never leave their handlers side.

How To Get A Service Dog For Aspergers

In order to obtain an autism service dog, or therapy dog, you must receive a recommendation from a licensed mental health professional or a doctor. This prescription takes the form of a letter, which will be written on your health professionals letterhead and include their license number.

There are no limitations to the breed of dog you can use as your psychiatric service dog or therapy dog. Autism Assistance dogs can therefore either be chosen from a dog you already own, a dog you adopt from a shelter or rescue group, or a dog you receive from a service dog organization. Keep in mind, however, that the dog must be specially trained to perform certain tasks in order to be recognized as a service dog under the Americans with Disabilities Act.

Service Dogs For People With Autism

Not all people with autism or an autism spectrum disorder are necessarily disabled by their condition. Some are able to function while others find that their condition substantially limits that persons ability to perform activities of daily living that most others take for granted.

There is a mistaken belief that people with Autism have issues feeling emotions. Autism was once considered a type of mental illness, but it is now recognized as a sensory processing disorder. People with Autism Spectrum Disorders may experience difficulty recognizing and processing subtle social cues in facial expression, body language, inflection, and intonation which results in confusion in learning how to recognize and exhibit expressions of emotions, but not the feelings of those emotions.

Service dogs can be trained for some people with Autism to help them gain independence, confidence, and the ability to perform activities of daily living that they could not otherwise perform.

Since 2013, Kingston 4 Paws Service Dogs has been training Labrador Retrievers and Standard Poodles to assist people and families living with autism. K4PSD is the first school located in the Southeastern Ontario region to provide this service to people who have autism.
