One common belief espoused by parents and public figures who are against vaccination is that vaccines cause autism spectrum disorder, despite several studies showing no correlation between childhood vaccination and autism diagnoses.

Whats Behind The Dramatic Rise In Autism Cases
The dramatic increase in the number of children diagnosed with an autism spectrum disorder is largely the result of changes in how the condition is reported, Danish researchers contend.
At least in Denmark, the researchers say, most of the increase 60 percent can be attributed to changes in diagnostic criteria and the inclusion of out-of-hospital diagnoses.
These findings should provide some relief for parents whove worried that the increase in numbers was caused solely by more kids actually developing the disorder, the study authors suggested.
That the increase until now has been left more or less unexplained has undoubtedly raised considerable concern among the public and might, in fact, have affected some parents health decisions regarding their child, said lead researcher Stefan Hansen, from the section for biostatistics in the department of public health at Aarhus University.
Until now, the hypothesis that changes in the diagnostic criteria and reporting practices have had an impact on autism rates was unconfirmed, he said. Many have worried that environmental factors were solely behind the rise in the number of autism diagnoses, according to background information in the study.
In other words, the symptoms for an autism diagnosis are slightly broader today than in years past, Hansen said.
The report was published online Nov. 3 in JAMA Pediatrics.

Almost one in every 20 school-age children in Northern Ireland has been diagnosed with autism.
More than 13,000 children between the ages of four to 15 have a diagnosis of autism an estimated 4.5% of the school aged population.
That is according to new figures published by the Department of Health .
The proportion of children with autism in schools in Northern Ireland has more than trebled in a decade.
In 2020/21, 4.5% of children aged four to 16 had been identified with autism or Aspergers syndrome, up from 1.2% in 2009.
While the DoH cautioned against direct comparison between years due to changes in the ways autism data is collected, they said an increasing number of children with all ages were being diagnosed with autism.
Boys were three times more likely to have a diagnosis of autism than girls.
The number of children of school-age with autism has been increasing by about 10% a year for the past decade.

However, we believe that autism is the fastest-growing serious development disability in The Bahamas, Mrs Newball said at a recent cheque presentation ceremony to the charity to assist with its public education programmes.
Recognising the importance of the Autism Awareness Programme organised and managed by REACH Bahamas, CIBC FirstCaribbean International Bank donated $5,000 to help advance the efforts of the local autism-awareness non-profit organisation.
Managing director at CIBC FirstCaribbean, Marie Rodland-Allen, said the bank recognises the increased prevalence of autism in the Bahamian community and made the donation to help REACH in its ongoing efforts to assist families affected by Autism Spectrum Disorder .

Autism?! We didnt have all this autism stuff when I was growing up! Oh my gosh! There are so many Autistic People now! This is an epidemic! Autistic People are everywhere, all of the sudden! Where did they come from?
Have you heard this nonsense? Have you heard this nonsense?
Lets talk about why this is nonsense and there is no autism epidemic.
First lets tackle the first claim that we didnt have all this autism stuff when you were growing up, because that ones easy.
We didnt have autism in our diagnostic manual until 1980. So there wasnt the word in the language for autism. It wasnt something that was diagnosed before 1980, but just because we didnt have a word for autism and for Autistic People, doesnt mean we werent here and we didnt exist.
That doesnt make sense. There are a lot of stars and planets in space that we havent named yet, but they are still out.
So heres the thing about that:

Heres how researchers track autisms prevalence and explain its apparent rise.
How do clinicians diagnose autism?There is no blood test, brain scan or any other objective test that can diagnose autismalthough researchers are actively trying to develop such tests. Clinicians rely on observations of a persons behavior to diagnose the condition.
In the U.S., the criteria for diagnosing autism are laid out in the Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders . The criteria are problems with social communication and interactions, and restricted interests or repetitive behaviors. Both of these core features must be present in early development.
What is the prevalence of autism in the U.S.?The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention estimates that 1 in 68children in the U.S. have autism. The prevalence is 1 in 42 for boys and 1 in 189 for girls. These rates yield a gender ratio of about five boys for every girl.

One In 44 Us Children Diagnosed With Autism New Data Suggests
New autism numbers released Thursday suggest more U.S. children are being diagnosed with the developmental condition and at younger ages.
In an analysis of 2018 data from nearly a dozen states, researchers at the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention found that among 8-year-olds, 1 in 44 had been diagnosed with autism. That rate compares with 1 in 54 identified with autism in 2016.
U.S. autism numbers have been on the rise for several years, but experts believe that reflects more awareness and wider availability of services to treat the condition rather than a true increase in the number of affected children.
A separate CDC report released Thursday said that children were 50 percent more likely to be diagnosed with autism by age 4 in 2018 than in 2014.
There is some progress being made and the earlier kids get identified, the earlier they can access services that they might need to improve their developmental outcome, said CDC researcher and co-author Kelly Shaw.

She isn’t sure why it happened and researchers, too, are still trying to understand the basis of the complex condition. Studies suggest that genes can act together with influences from the environment to affect development in ways that lead to Autism Spectrum Disorder . But rates of ASD are rising dramatically, making the need to figure out why it’s happening all the more urgent.
