Arriving at an autism diagnosis is tricky, as theres no single blood draw or medical test that can be given and since many children with ASD hit milestones like sitting up, crawling and walking on time.

Additionally, we can also see a speech delay in toddlers or atypical speech development patterns. “Echoing, for example, can be indicative of ASD, though this is not always the case,” says Dr. Angulo.

“Toddlers can show more clear signs for ASD than babies,” says Dr. Angulo.

There is significant research showing that children with ASD can be diagnosed accurately as young as 14 months old. However, notes Dr. Angulo, some parents will say that they suspected much earlier or that they didnt notice difficulties until much later.

Note that pediatricians dont routinely screen for ASD in children until they are 18 months old. Waiting until the year and a half mark increases the likelihood that they can identify these differences in young children, while still diagnosing the condition at a young age, says Dr. Angulo. However, if you notice signs of ASD before 18 months, it really helps to mention them to your child’s pediatrician as they may not be screening for autism at earlier visits.

I wasn’t worried about my baby’s development until I got this “9 month questionnaire” and started realising my baby is behind on communication. Then reading up on things I got quite worried.She’s almost 10 months and I’m not sure she knows her name. Most of the time she ignores me when she’s playing. When she does turn to look at me, she does it even if I call out a random word.She can’t follow any simple commands like clap your hands, play peekaboo, put that back, etc, like it says they should do by 9 months.She’s babbling, is quite smiley and has good eye contact though.She was really hard to wean, seems obsessed with lights and flaps her hands a lot. She seems to be in her own little world when she plays with toys and has no interest in showing me what she’s doing or interacting. I read these are all signs of autism? Should I be worried?

Thank you!Have you had your 9-12 month review? I told the HV all the things I was worried about and she either had an explanation for them or suggestions on what we could try to develop skills/reduce certain behaviours.DD finally started playing peekaboo, following simple commands and identifying people/pets by name this week. She still doesn’t point but hopefully will develop that when she’s ready.It’s crazy how quickly and suddenly they change at this age. Hope you see the changes you are expecting soon – it’s so hard not to worry about absolutely everything!! xx
