If you qualify meet all of the above criteria, it must also demonstrated that your or your childs autistic disorder also results in at least two of the following:
- Noticeable restriction of daily living activities. This refers to your or your childs ability to perform basic self-care activities, such as grooming, feeding oneself, and going to the bathroom.
- Noticeable difficulty of social functions. The Social Security Administration defines this as your or your childs ability to form and keep relationships. Impairment may be demonstrated by physically aggressive acts, social isolation, or becoming mute.

Based on the age of the person with autistic disorder, a standardized test may be provided to determine communicative or cognitive functioning. This tests for language and speech development; and cognitive impairments, such as having an IQ score of 70 or less.

Is Autism A Learning Disability

Likewise, a child with autism may have trouble understanding gestures or facial expressions. These factors will also be taken into account when Social Security performs a disability determination.
Other behaviors a doctor will assess in evaluating autism include preoccupation with patterns and/or compulsive adherence to rituals. A child exhibiting these behaviors could have serious limitations in any of the other domains, such as Attending and Completing Tasks or Caring for Yourself.

- It must prevent you from working in your previous job.
- It must prevent you from learning a new trade or getting a new job.

What Happens When Your Child Turns 18
At 18, Social Security considers your child an adult and different rules are used to determine if an adult can get SSI disability payments. Starting at age 18, SSI no longer will consider the income and resources of family members when deciding whether an adult meets financial limits. If your child is already receiving SSI, Social Security will review their medical condition when they turn 18. If your child was not eligible for SSI before their 18th birthday because of financial limits, they may become eligible at 18 and should apply again.

Is Aspergers A Disability
In order to qualify for disability, the SSAs third step requires that your disability is listed in the SSAs official list of coverable conditions.; Even if the disability is not on this list, you may still be covered for a disability that is of a similar nature and severity.; Fortunately, Mental Disorders is one of the 14 categories for adult disabilities.
Asperger syndrome is not listed as a unique disorder.; Rather, following the definition in the DSM-5 , Aspergers is included under autism spectrum disorder.; Though many people still use the name Aspergers, autism spectrum disorder includes Aspergers, as well as many other autism disorders.
According to Autism Speaks, the national organization for autism awareness, Asper syndrome is a high functioning form of autism.; Many people with Aspergers have trouble interacting with others and may become fixated on tasks.; Additionally, though they are often intelligent, they may still have trouble working with others or independently on work-related tasks.

How Do I Apply For Ssi
Try to schedule your interview with Social Security to take place immediately after your child turns 18. You may want to call before the childs birthday, however the interview will not be able to take place until the child is 18. A person may not have more than $2000 in assets to be eligible for SSI. Adjustments may have to be made five years prior to age 18. Be sure to alert other family members not to give large gifts of money or stocks directly to your young adult directly or in their wills.
It may also be appropriate to collect monthly room and board from your young adult who will receive SSI and continue to live with you at home because this will establish a pattern of their paying a portion of their benefits towards monthly rent in preparation for them moving into their own housing.

The form includes the information booklet which you absolutely need to read.; Forms this big can be really daunting but the information booklet really does help.; Personally I found it easier to print out a copy and write out a draft first.;;Use the Information booklet as your guide to complete the form.
I would recommend having all your relevant reports, letters and documents about your child to hand for reference.;;For example speech and language reports and/or a diagnosis letter.; You are likely to need names, dates and addresses from them when completing the form.; They may also help you with things to identify in the form.
If you havent already got a file with all your childs reports this might be a good time to get it all organised.; I currently have two lever arch files full of letters, reports and forms and my son is only four.
