Film Editor Joe Holloran Examines The Ways In Which Autism Spectrum Disorder Is Portrayed On The Small Screen

When it comes to more diverse representation on TV, producers and creators have become more attuned to the representational needs of the wider public over the last decade or so. Sadly, there are some groups for whom this revolution bypassed. One of those is people on the autism spectrum .

Authors note: You can read part 2 of this series by clicking this link.

I was diagnosed as having Aspergers Syndrome back in 2016. I, therefore, identify as an Aspie. This type of autism is as complex in scope and as varied in impact as all other forms, but some common traits include: repetitive and restricted interests, sensory sensitivity, issues with socialization and more prominent literal thinking.

When you think of an autistic character from film or TV what comes to mind? I dont know for sure but I can take an educated guess that you are probably thinking of Raymond Babbitt from Rain Man . Dont get me wrong, Rain Man is an excellent film and, for its time, actually portrays ASD quite sympathetically. But, Babbitt is only one portrayal of a vast condition and one that is now over thirty-years old.

Although he does improve in this regard in the last few seasons, this is still the biggest issue for me with the character of Sheldon Cooper. The popularity of the show means that for a whole generation, he is the autistic person they know and now because of his behaviour many of the negative stereotypes around ASD will forever be reinforced in the minds of the audience.

The Canucks Autism Network is a B.C. charity that offers subsidized social and sports programs for children with ASD and their siblings and families.

Getting Help For Children With Learning Disabilities

When it comes to learning disabilities, it’s not always easy to know what to do and where to find help. Turning to specialists who can pinpoint and diagnose the problem is, of course, important. You will also want to work with your child’s school to make accommodations for your child and get specialized academic help. But don’t overlook your own role. You know your child better than anyone else, so take the lead in looking into your options, learning about new treatments and services, and overseeing your child’s education.

Learn the specifics about your child’s learning disability. Learn about your child’s type of learning disability. Find out how the disability affects the learning process and what cognitive skills are involved. It’s easier to evaluate learning techniques if you understand how the learning disability affects your child.

Research treatments, services, and new theories. Along with knowing about the type of learning disability your child has, educate yourself about the most effective treatment options available. This can help you advocate for your child at school and pursue treatment at home.

Pursue treatment and services at home. Even if the school doesn’t have the resources to treat your child’s learning disability optimally, you can pursue these options on your own at home or with a therapist or tutor.

Does The Child Naturally Imitate Play

A Sign of Autism

Imitation is another form of communication, and is a key milestone on the road to verbal speech.

In addition to what Dr. Barbera mentions in her video, other communication signs that a child could have autism in addition to speech delay include a lack of response to their name and/or verbal attempts for attention, babbling and cooing during their first year and then stopping, and being unable to combine words into phrases or sentences .

Dr. Barbera recommends that concerned parents be familiar with milestones and not just those related to language. Self-care and self-regulation skills like feeding oneself and calming oneself are important to note, too. She emphasizes that there is a range in development, however, and not every two-year-old is doing everything. There is no need to panic if your child isnt meeting every milestone, but knowing what milestones they should be meeting can help put you on the right path to understanding what is going on with your child.

According to the CDC, if your child shows the signs Dr. Barbera mentioned and also cant walk, doesnt notice when their caregiver comes and goes, or loses skills at 18 months old, you should contact your pediatrician.

And if your child doesnt use two-word phrases, doesnt know what to do with common items , or doesnt walk steadily at two years old, the CDC recommends you contact your pediatrician.

Oskar Schell Extremely Loud & Incredibly Close

Nine-year old Oskar Schells tests for Aspergers may have come back inconclusive , but this smart-as-a-whip boys aversion to loud noises, lack of comfort in social interactions, obsessive compulsive tendencies, and fixation with numbers all suggest some sort of diagnosis somewhere on the Spectrum. Oskars character has been the subject of heated debates between those in the autism community who find Oskar inspiring and relatable, and critics who found the movie-version Oskar to be everything from creepy to totally weird. Regardless of the criticisms, Oskar Schell was one of the first autistic main characters in a bestseller, and undeniably paved the way for more characters like him.

Diagnosis And Testing For Learning Disabilities And Disorders

Since diagnosing a learning disability isnt always easy, dont assume you know what your childs problem is, even if the symptoms seem clear. It’s important to have your child tested and evaluated by a qualified professional. That said, you should trust your instincts. If you think something is wrong, listen to your gut. If you feel that a teacher or doctor is minimizing your concerns, seek a second opinion. Don’t let anyone tell you to wait and see or don’t worry about it if you see your child struggling. Regardless of whether or not your child’s problems are due to a learning disability, intervention is needed. You can’t go wrong by looking into the issue and taking action.

Keep in mind that finding someone who can help may take some time and effort. Even experts mix up learning disabilities with ADHD and other behavioral problems sometimes. You may have to look around a bit or try more than one professional. In the meantime, try to be patient, and remember that you won’t always get clear answers. Try not to get too caught up in trying to determine the label for your child’s disorder. Leave that to the professionals. Focus instead on steps you can take to support your child and address their symptoms in practical ways.

Dr Sheldon Cooper The Big Bang Theory

AUTISM TEST: How to TEST for Autism (FAST)

Easily the most debated character on our list is Dr. Sheldon Cooper of The Big Bang Theory. Does Sheldon actually have Aspergers, and if so, does the show make fun of those on the Spectrum or embrace them through such a quirky, yet lovable character? While we arent totally sure about the answer to those questions , we think co-star Mayim Bialik is right on the money with her statement on the matter: OCD was the topic of my thesis when I did my doctorate. I think that Sheldon would definitely be on the spectrum, as we say. I actually dont think that I would give him the diagnosis of Aspergers. I would give him Obsessive Compulsive probably moderate to severe, Generalized Anxiety Disorder, possibly Social Anxiety Disorder but not pure Aspergers as we know it.
