Help for missing adults with autism

Some autistic adults know exactly what kind of work they want , while others have no idea what kind of job theyd like to have.

Just like everyone else, autistic adults have the responsibility and the right to direct their own lives.

Even if a person has limited verbal skills, they still need to know that the work they are doing matches their interests and abilities, and gives them a sense of purpose.

School counselors and agency personnel can use tools such as vocational and aptitude tests to help autistic people figure out which career path would be a good fit for them.

An autistic persons vision can then be made part of their transition plan. That makes it easier to plan for training, internships, and vocational opportunities.

Finding Autistic People You Like

It’s important to remember that autistic people are as unique, varied, and shaped by personal life experiences as anyone else in the world.

If you run across an autistic person who does not treat you well , try not to take it personally. Just like everyone else, autistic people vary in personality and interests. Keep on looking and exploring, and eventually you’ll probably find an autistic person who shares some of your interests and views.

Tip : Better Organize Your Life

While many adults with ASD are extremely organized, others may become so fixated on certain interests that other aspects of their lives become disorganized. If this is a challenge you face, these tips can help you stay organized:

Use a timer to stay on track. This can be especially useful when youre working on a hobby that youre intensely passionate about. Once the timer goes off, you know its time to switch to an activity that is less intriguing, but nonetheless important, such as paying bills or grocery shopping.

Use a list or day planner. If remembering appointments and other responsibilities is a challenge, use a paper planner or an organizational app for your cell phone. You could also use anything from spreadsheets to a whiteboard to help you organize daily tasks.

Automate certain aspects of your life. For example, use online banking to track spending and automatic payment options to manage your bills. This can also help you avoid the clutter that tends to build up when you receive paper billing statements in the mail.

Living With A Diagnosis

Feel caught off guard by your adult autism diagnosis? It may help to look at your diagnosis as a path to better understanding yourself. You can gain insight on challenging moments from your childhood or teen years, for example, or any relationship problems youve experienced as an adult.

Every adult with ASD has both unique challenges to overcome and unique strengths to draw upon. However, there are some common challenges to address, including difficulty building or maintaining relationships, social isolation, managing mood disorders, and staying organized.

Even if you havent received a formal diagnosis, if you suspect you have ASD, you can begin to take steps to improve your life. The following tips and strategies can help.

Where To Start If You Suspect You Have Autism Spectrum Disorder

If you think you may have autism spectrum disorder, the best place to start is with a self-assessment test. These informal questionnaires allow you to explore your symptoms and help you prepare for a discussion with a healthcare provider.

Once youve taken a self-assessment test, schedule an appointment with your primary care physician or a mental health professional. You can also contact a local ASD center, such as your nearest Autism Speaks treatment network location. These organizations may have a consulting psychologist on staff who can help you if a formal assessment is too expensive.

You can also pursue the following alternatives if you suspect you have autism spectrum disorder:

  • Contact the psychology/psychiatry department of a local university or teaching hospital.
  • Ask members of an adult autism support group where they received their diagnoses.
  • Request doctor recommendations from your therapist or ask them to diagnose you.
  • Reach out to the governing body for psychologists and ask for the names of doctors in your area familiar with ASD.
  • Obtain a diagnosis from a supervised graduate student at a local university or teaching hospital.

Despite the benefits of an ASD diagnosis, it can be difficult to find medical professionals who diagnose and treat adults. And because theres no lab test, diagnoses are based on non-quantitative behavioral factors that are hard to pinpoint.

What Are Some Risk Factors Of Depression And Other Mental Health Issues With Asd

To explore risks for depression for someone with autism, we can begin before the individual is even conceived. We know that depression can have genetic factors. If someones parent, or both the mother and father, have a history of depression, their risk also goes up for developing depression disorders in their life.

One study titled Genetics Factors in Major Depression Disease states:Family and twin studies have demonstrated that the contribution of genetic factors to the risk of the onset of DDs is quite large.

After conception, maternal depression can play a part in fetal developmental disorders , and future development of depression for that child.

For instance, some believe that if a pregnant person takes an antidepressant during their pregnancy, the risk of autism spectrum disorder is higher . So, the fetus risk of developing depression would be two-fold in that particular circumstance, both genetics, and their risk of autism spectrum disorders, which we know is associated with a higher risk of depression in itself.

However, when determining the risks of maternal antidepressant use, the life and wellbeing of the pregnant person also must be taken into consideration. Each person is different, sometimes the benefits outweigh the risks.

Some things to consider for maternal antidepressant exposure would be:

  • prenatal antidepressant exposure
  • risks of not taking them
  • trimester exposure
  • neonatal exposure
  • risk to the fetus

Varied Availability Of Services

Adults with autism are often legally entitled to nothing, but are likely to receive at least some level of support. If you live in some states, you’ll have little trouble accessing services and funding for adults with autism. But if you live in other states, you may find that there is limited support.

Some states that offer the least generous programs and services include:

  • New Mexico

Among the more generous states are:

  • California

Of course, the definition of “services and funding” varies depending upon need. For example, Medicaid doesn’t provide vocational training or supportservices that would be particularly useful to higher functioning adults.

Medicaid may or may not be a source of funding for housing, day programs, and other services.

One excellent, updated source of information about state-by-state offerings is Easterseals. While they do focus quite a bit on children, they also include a wide range of detailed information about resources and services for all ages.

Most Autistic Adults Are Underemployed

What its like to live as an adult with autism | Your Morning

Fewer than half of autistic adults are employed. Of those, many have only part-time jobs or are doing work for which theyre overqualified.

There are also many autistic people working as volunteers or in programs outside the mainstream.

Here are a few key reasons why autistic adults end up in these positions:

  • Low expectations: Few schoolsand sometimes even familiesexpect autistic children to find satisfying careers. The exception is if they happen to have extraordinary skills. However, the lowered expectations for most autistic children can be destructive to their self-confidence.
  • Competition and challenges: To get a job in the general community, autistic people have to compete for positions. That can be hard for people with compromised social communication skills. These challenges can hamper their performance in job interviews and make it hard for them to engage successfully with co-workers. Some autistic adults also find it hard to manage the physical requirements of the workplace, especially if they have sensitivities to light, sound, and other stimuli that they might not have any control over in these settings.
  • Lack of programs: Most workplace programs for disabled adults were not developed with autism in mind. Rather, they were intended to work for people with intellectual or physical disabilities.
