ADHD and autism are separate neurodevelopmental disorders that can share some symptoms. There are key differences, and a person can have both conditions.
In this article, we look at the differences between;autism;and;ADHD, the full name of which is attention deficit hyperactivity disorder.
We also explore whether there is a relationship between the two conditions and describe diagnoses and treatments.
What is ADHD?
ADHD is a common neurodevelopmental disorder. According to the;American Psychiatric Association , ADHD affects around 8.4% of children and 2.5% of adults. Doctors diagnose it more often in males than in females.
Children with ADHD experience difficulties with attention, hyperactivity, and impulse control. They may struggle to concentrate, sit still, or think before they act.
There are three subtypes of ADHD, and a doctor will base the diagnosis on a persons specific symptoms.
The ADHD subtypes are:

- combined
ADHD symptoms may improve as a child gets older and can gain more focus and control over their impulses.

Its answer is yes. This positive change took place only since 2013.;In the past, the manual used by health professionals did not allow for a co-diagnosis of the two conditions such as Autism;Spectrum Disorder and ADHD.
This changed in 2013 when the 5th edition of the Diagnostic and Statistical Manual for Mental Disorders was released.
Hence, its now possible to have a diagnosis of both ASD+ADHD at a time.;Due to this reason, most research examined autism and ADHD separately up to 2013.

Between 50-70% of the genetic factors show;overlapping in both conditions. It may explain the continuous co-occurrence of ASD+ADHD.

Is Autism And Asd The Same Thing
Most people have heard of the term Autism, but the term Autism Spectrum Disorder might be much more unfamiliar. So what exactly does ASD mean, and is it the same thing as Autism?
Autism Spectrum Disorder is an umbrella term which refers to the different disorders that are classified in the spectrum. Each individual is unique in the way their disorder affects them. Autism is one of several of these different disorders under ASD, and has its own set of symptoms and conditions that it identifies with. In addition to Autism, there are other disorders such as Aspergers Snydrome, Childhood Disintegrative Disorder, Pervasive Developmental Disorder, and several others. Each of these diagnoses have their own classifications and characteristics. However, despite two people having the same classification, there are often variances between each and every unique individual, so no two people are ever the same, even if they have the same diagnosis.
Technically speaking, Autism is NOT the same thing as ASD, but more so a subcategory that falls under the greater umbrella term of ASD. When someone uses the term ASD, they can then be referring one of many of the other diagnoses other than Autism.

Parents may be slow to pick up the signs of autism enumerated above. A child with distinct special interests, like dinosaurs or cloud formations, may seem delightful to an adult, but odd to another 7-year-old. When a child goes to preschool, social difficulties become more evident. Typically, kids with behaviors associated with AS find it difficult to make friends. They have a hard time reading other people or understanding humor.

People become better at coping with ADHD and ASD as they get older. Adults with ADHD can feel disorganized and inattentive, requiring them to work harder than others at managing tasks in home and work life. Adults with ASD can feel disconnected from others.

How Are Adhd And Autism Diagnosed
To obtain an accurate, complete diagnosis, Bertin suggests working with a profession- al who is familiar with both conditions. A thorough evaluation aims to define a childs strengths and weaknesses, he says. Various test measures try to document ADHD symptoms, executive function, social and communication delays, anxiety, mood disorders, and a host of other symptoms.
But tests alone are not enough. Evaluating both ADHD and autism remains a clinical skill based on getting to know a child and seeking a comprehensive picture of their life in the real world, a global sense of a childs social and conversational abilities, as well as their play and daily living skills.
Diagnosis can be a fluid, ongoing process. It was for Clark, now 17, according to his mother, Pamela Fagan Hutchins, the author of the book The Clark Kent Chronicles: A Mothers Tale Of Life With Her ADHD And Aspergers Son. Although Hutchins earliest concerns about Clark were about autism-like symptoms, ADHD, not ASD, was Clarks first diagnosis.
We first noticed autism-like symptoms when Clark was two, like running to the left in circles while waggling his left hand, Hutchins says. It was when he started school that we noticed ADHD symptoms. He had a lot of trouble staying on task. Clark received anADHD diagnosis in fourth grade, and Aspergers syndrome about a year and a half later.

For many years, doctors held that one individual could not have both ADHD and autism, but in 2013 the Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders allowed for the possibility of a dual diagnosis. The two conditions coincide frequently. According to the National Institutes of Health , about 30 to 80 percent of children with autism also meet the criteria for ADHD. About 20 to 50 percent of children diagnosed with ADHD similarly meet the criteria for autism.
It is possible to have both ADHD and autism. Finding a doctor that can give distinct diagnoses can help families and individuals seek the best treatments and therapies, something thats important to address at an early age for both conditions.

Asd Symptoms In Children With Adhd
This profile of social difficulties differs, however, from that observed in ASD, in which impairment in the basic understanding of social realm is central, such as a lack of emotional reciprocity and engagement with others, and the low interest or enjoyment in social interaction. Cantwell described a type of social difficulty in ADHD by a lack of savoir faire, and estimated that this social naivety may affect some 20% of ADHD children and adolescents. Recent research suggests that many individuals with ADHD may experience social impairments that are more consistent with those observed in ASD. In children with a primary diagnosis of ADHD, the level of autistic symptomatology corresponded to the severity of ADHD subtype; children with the combined type of ADHD-demonstrated the most autistic symptoms . In a study recently published by Kotte et al. , a positive autistic traits profile operationalized from the CBCL, was significantly overrepresented among ADHD children vs. controls .

Limitations Of The Review
We have focused exclusively on EEG-imaging, but other imaging modalities such as fMRI or MEG, which are typically thought as having better spatial resolution, can also contribute to research into the neural basis of the ADHD-ASD overlap and distinction . The use of EEG-imaging and its recent mobile developments in large samples can serve as a foundation for more targeted analyses with other high-cost and less accessible methods .
Our review consists of a qualitative rather than a quantitative synthesis of the available evidence. While we have identified a relatively high number of studies in young adult samples , these were spread across neurocognitive domains and have employed heterogeneous cognitive paradigms precluding pooling of the data across studies at this stage, for instance, via meta-analyses. Here, we highlight the candidate neurocognitive processes and markers leveraging EEG-imaging, alongside established and novel cognitive paradigms, which could provide the foundation for the next phase of research in ADHD-ASD overlap. We also seek to galvanise joint collaborative efforts, such as data-sharing, so that a more formal quantitative reviews could be conducted in the near future. As the literature in this age group accumulates, further reviews could focus on specific age ranges and specific neurocognitive processes/tasks within this developmental period.

For example, children with autism can demonstrate violent or aggressive behaviour, be impulsive, and have problems in school and with social relations — and these same symptoms can be shared by children with ADHD.
Researchers from iPSYCH, Denmark’s largest research project in the field of psychiatry, have now discovered that the similarities between the two diagnoses can be linked to changes in the same genes. The new study is the largest study to date of rare mutations in the genome of people with ADHD and autism.

How Is Autism Diagnosed
Like ADHD, Autism cant be diagnosed with a medical test like a blood test or physical exam. Instead, its diagnosed with psychological exams and other observational signs. The DSM-5 changed the way autism is diagnosed significantly. Before the revisions, autism was broken up into different categories based on severity and specific symptoms. However, autism is so variable; many clinicians believed the categories werent able to accurately describe autism as a whole. Instead, its now defined as an autism spectrum disorder, which encompasses the full range of possible symptoms and severities.;
Its important to note, the criteria for an autism diagnosis looks at deficiencies and uses words like deficit. This language is debated because of the way it may impact people to learn they have a chronic condition that causes deficits. However, being diagnosed with a disorder doesnt mean you are doomed to be deficient, and you may learn to cope with autism on your own or with help in a way that allows you to live a productive and meaningful life.;

Since autism can affect people differently, treatment needs to be personalized, meeting the needs of individual people. Parental training and family therapies may be able to help parents intervene in important early developmental years. Behavior and communications therapies can also help develop skills to deal with everyday life.;

Clinical And Research Implications
The study identified differences in the treatment with ADHD medication between adults, and to some extent adolescents; and children, with or without coexisting ADHD and ASD regarding treatment initiation, medication type, which could not be explained by other comorbid psychiatric disorders. Further clinical studies are needed, particularly longitudinal studies, addressing potential differences in prescribing patterns, and pharmacological effects from ADHD medications that directly compares individuals with ADHD with and without coexisting ASD. Although the study is restricted to individuals in Sweden, the clinical diagnoses and the studied medications are now standard across the western world and we believe the results would be predictive also for other populations.
