The Part Where I Wish Time Machines Were A Thing
As I jump on the freeway, I remember to call my psychiatrist also that I forgot to charge my phone last night. Gotta decide between my headphones or my charger .
4 percent battery? Charger wins. I wish wireless headphones were an option, but I have a hard enough time not losing regular headphones. And technically, theyre on a leash.
I try using the speakerphone but its too noisy on the freeway, so I hold the phone up to my ear as I call. The receptionist says theres only one appointment available before my meds run out do I want it? Um let me check my calendar
Shoot. Its the same time as coffee with Anna. This would be the second time in a row Ive canceled on her. Not much choice though.
Ill make it up to her,I vow somehow.
I bring the phone back to my ear and see police lights in my rearview mirror. I panic and wonder how long theyve been following me. The receptionist is halfway through confirming my appointment I hang up and pull over.
One policeman eyes the dirty plates on my passenger side floor I call these my car dishes as the other hands me a ticket. As soon as they turn away, I start bawling. But Im very aware I deserved it and weirdly grateful for being called out. Ill definitely drive safer from now on.
I get back on the road and check Waze obsessively to see whether I can make up for lost time. I drive faster, but Waze is annoyingly accurate. Eight minutes late as predicted.
I awkwardly end the meeting.
I eat fries.
Adult Adhd Symptom: Daydreaming
Not to be confused with zoning out , daydreaming is different. ADHDers are curious by nature. It’s easy for us to get lost exploring passions and seeking answers to our many questions. Our daydreaming might look like a deep dive into Instagram or re-living an awesome vacation.
If Im not interested in what a person is yammering on abouteven if I know its an important presentation and I should be paying close attentionmy mind starts to wander.

We Are Moving Toward A Neurodiverse Future
There is a growing movement of people who are neurodiverse. We dont consider ourselves sick, flawed, dumb, dysfunctional, lazy, crazy, unlovable, incapable, or without anything to offer. We are gifted, loving, bright people living in a world that says our differences are unacceptable. This is difficult, but we dont need or want pity. We have challenges we are not challenges. We are different, but equal. Left-handed children used to be forced to use their right hand instead, and that was wrong, foolish, and harmful. Perhaps we are moving to a more enlightened time when neurodiverse people will be no more odd than someone who is left-handed.
I wish the world knew what it means to be forgiving and understanding of neurodiversity to accommodate our weaknesses, and celebrate our strengths. It may seem a pain to change environments and procedures to fit those differences, but like all accommodations, they benefit everyone with both permanent and temporary differences. Creating check-ins and helping prioritize workloads are critical for ADHD worker success, and those same ADHD accommodations can help other workers keep on task and feel valued. Flexible schedules to help people with ADHD who are slow to wake up also help single parents get their kids on the bus in the morning. Creating schools, workplaces, and homes where everyone can thrive is a high tide that will raise all boats.

Adult Adhd Symptom: Staying On Task
Concentrating on one task until it is finished is an issue that we all have at times because our minds are naturally disorderly places. The ADHD brain, however, hatches new plans and ideas constantly and can easily skip and jump from one idea to the next, forgetting to loop back to the original task, as average people might. Being online can be especially challenging for ADHD-ers . I set timers or limit myself to allowing only a fixed number of tabs open on my computer . There are other tricks, old-fashioned tools like paper planners and calendars, and apps, like RescueTime and Freedom, that are designed to keep us productive.
To be clear, adults dont need babysitterswe need prompters, tools, and allies, and the confidence to ask for them. With proper support, ADHD-ers are big thinkers and do extraordinary work. We just need a little help getting through tasks we may find boring.
What it feels like: On a busy day, its not unusual for me to overestimate how much I can get done. I sometimes start up to five tasks during the daywriting thank you notes at breakfast, chopping vegetables for soup at lunch, researching a new smartphone, and creating a spreadsheet of expenses in the afternoon. They are all works in progress, which is fine until a deadline pops up . I give myself two days to complete tasks, one day to start and one day to finish, so I am not constantly berating myself for not finishing them.
