The use of EEG-imaging and its recent mobile developments in large samples can serve as a foundation for more targeted analyses with other high-cost and less accessible methods .
Our review consists of a qualitative rather than a quantitative synthesis of the available evidence. While we have identified a relatively high number of studies in young adult samples , these were spread across neurocognitive domains and have employed heterogeneous cognitive paradigms precluding pooling of the data across studies at this stage, for instance, via meta-analyses. Here, we highlight the candidate neurocognitive processes and markers leveraging EEG-imaging, alongside established and novel cognitive paradigms, which could provide the foundation for the next phase of research in ADHD-ASD overlap. We also seek to galvanise joint collaborative efforts, such as data-sharing, so that a more formal quantitative reviews could be conducted in the near future. As the literature in this age group accumulates, further reviews could focus on specific age ranges and specific neurocognitive processes/tasks within this developmental period.

In this article, we look at the differences between autism and ADHD, the full name of which is attention deficit hyperactivity disorder.
We also explore whether there is a relationship between the two conditions and describe diagnoses and treatments.
What is ADHD?
ADHD is a common neurodevelopmental disorder. According to the American Psychiatric Association , ADHD affects around 8.4% of children and 2.5% of adults. Doctors diagnose it more often in males than in females.
Children with ADHD experience difficulties with attention, hyperactivity, and impulse control. They may struggle to concentrate, sit still, or think before they act.
There are three subtypes of ADHD, and a doctor will base the diagnosis on a persons specific symptoms.

Beyond Meds: Treating Add And Asd
Before or after a child gets a definitive diagnosis, behavioral therapies can help. If a child has ongoing social challenges, for example, many of the interventions are similar such as behavioral therapy to help develop skills, Bertin says.

Out of 3738 articles identified in the initial search , 3608 were discarded after screening and 75 articles were included in the current review . To organise this vast literature, the relevant studies are grouped according to the primary neurocognitive domain investigated, broadly defined as: 1) attention processing, 2) inhibitory control, 3) performance monitoring, 4) face processing, 5) imitation and empathy, 6) sensory processing, and 7) memory and language.
Each of the neurocognitive domains is subsequently divided according to the focus on ADHD or ASD. ERP studies are described first, followed by those including data relevant to brain oscillations . We did not find any research in the relevant age period directly comparing both disorders or considering dual-diagnosis. This points towards a critical gap in the literature for ADHD and ASD research in young adulthood we return to this issue in our discussion, where we highlight the candidate neurocognitive processes that are likely to inform research investigating the ADHD-ASD overlap and/or distinction in young adulthood.

Is My Child With Adhd On The Autism Spectrum

Kids with ASD not only do they have impairment with their executive function skills, they also have significant social interaction and communication problems. Kids with just ASD are more likely to also have significant impairments in speech and language development and learning disorders. Children with ADHD wont have such severe social and communication problems. They may struggle socially but more because of their hyperactive or impulsive nature.

How Are Adhd And Autism Diagnosed

A thorough evaluation aims to define a childs strengths and weaknesses, he says. But tests alone are not enough. Diagnosis can be a fluid, ongoing process. It was for Clark, now 17, according to his mother, Pamela Fagan Hutchins, the author of the book The Clark Kent Chronicles: A Mothers Tale Of Life With Her ADHD And Aspergers Son. Although Hutchins earliest concerns about Clark were about autism-like symptoms, ADHD, not ASD, was Clarks first diagnosis.
We first noticed autism-like symptoms when Clark was two, like running to the left in circles while waggling his left hand, Hutchins says. It was when he started school that we noticed ADHD symptoms. He had a lot of trouble staying on task. Clark received anADHD diagnosis in fourth grade, and Aspergers syndrome about a year and a half later.
How Is Adhd Treated
There is no known cure for ADHD, but it can be treated with medications and behavioral therapies. Prescription medications can be used in children and adults with ADHD, though its usually recommended that children under three should avoid these prescriptions. Stimulant drugs like amphetamines are among the most common when it comes to treating ADHD. Drugs like Ritalin, Concerta, and Adderall are among the first-line medications for the disorder. These drugs can increase dopamine levels, which is a chemical in the brain thats tied to ADHD.
Parental training and behavioral therapies can also help children and adults learn to cope with symptoms and live productive lives.

How Does Treatment For Adhd And Autism Differ
Treatments for both ADHD and autism can vary depending on the severity of the condition and how much the symptoms affect everyday life.
Behaviour therapy and medication can help with both these conditions. With autism, however, extra therapy may be recommended such as counselling, education support, speech therapy and occupational therapy.
With both, an early diagnosis can help children and their families to manage the condition. If you are at all concerned that your child has either ADHD or autism, its a good idea to speak to your doctor or paediatrician as soon as possible.
Differences Between Adhd And Asd
Despite both conditions sharing similar symptoms, they are two different disorders.
Ability to focus
While those with autism may lose concentration when doing tasks they dont particularly like, they can show intense focus and fixate on special interests they have. Those with ADHD are easily distracted and generally dislike any task that requires attention to detail.
Autistic individuals tend to be socially awkward with the inability to put thoughts and feelings together to communicate effectively and rarely make eye contact. Though on occasion, some with ASD can talk in great lengths but only about their particular interests.
In contrast, those with ADHD may have the gift of the gab, disrupting others mid-conversation and leading their own confidently.
Individuals with ASD generally prefer order, doing the same things repeatedly and dislike unpredictable changes. They find comfort in having the same daily routine, eating the same food or being severely attached to only one particular favorite toy. In comparison, those with ADHD can be disorganized, dislike repetition and often get bored fairly quickly.

What Is The Difference Between Add And Adhd
With so many children and adults affected by this disorder, there has been a lot of debate and confusion over what to call it. Depending on how old they were when they were diagnosed, what the perspective of their therapist was, or what their own personal view of the disorder is, people who are affected may call the same type of symptoms ADD or ADHD. The terms are used interchangeably, though ADHD is recognized as the current, official term.
Fortunately, we can always look to the official diagnostic standards in the psychology community to really answer the difference of ADD vs ADHD.
The biggest difference between ADD and ADHD is that ADD is obsolete terminology that is no longer used as a formal diagnosis.
You cant have an apples-to-apples comparison of the terms because ADD hasnt been formally defined as a diagnosis since 1987 in the Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders, or DSM. Thats the standard manual used by medical and psychology professionals to diagnose any type of mental disorder. The manual is currently in its fifth edition, and is usually called the DSM-5.
ADD used to be a featured diagnosis in the DSM, beginning in 1980 with the release of the DSM-III as Attention-Deficit Disorder, with or without hyperactivity.
In 1987, that was changed to Attention-Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder in the DSM-III-R revision.
