Parents often notice the first signs of autism in their children at around 12 to 18 months. Maybe a child isnt making eye contact, or wont smile when mom or dad walks in the door.

But a new study suggests there is evidence of autism in the brain even earlierwell before a childs first birthdayand that the signs can be seen on a magnetic resonance imaging scan. Were learning that there are biological changes that occur at or before the symptoms start to emerge, says Geraldine Dawson, a clinical psychologist and autism researcher at Duke University who was not involved in the new work. Its the ability to detect autism at its very earliest stages thats going to allow us to intervene before the full syndrome is manifest.

For the study, published this week in Nature, researchers conducted MRI scans on 150 children three times: at six months old, one year and two years. Just over 100 of the children were at high risk because they had an older sibling diagnosed with autism. The faster growth rate of the surface areas of their brains correctly predicted eight times out of 10 which of the high-risk children would go on to be diagnosed with the condition.

Social And Communication Skills

Impairments in social skills present many challenges for autistic individuals. Deficits in social skills may lead to problems with friendships, romantic relationships, daily living, and vocational success. One study that examined the outcomes of autistic adults found that, compared to the general population, those with ASD were less likely to be married, but it is unclear whether this outcome was due to deficits in social skills or intellectual impairment, or some other reason.

Prior to 2013, deficits in social function and communication were considered two separate symptoms of autism. The current criteria for autism diagnosis require individuals to have deficits in three social skills: social-emotional reciprocity, nonverbal communication, and developing and sustaining relationships.

• Lack of mutual sharing of interests: many autistic children prefer not to play or interact with others.

What Are Some Early Signs Of Autism In Toddlers

When a baby becomes a toddler, various developmental differences, signs and symptoms may become more apparent with the growing age of the child.

During their first year, toddlers with autism spectrum disorder may not:

• like seeing new faces,

• may not be able to walk, or w__alk only on their toes__
• may find certain sounds, tastes and smells upsetting,
• may fall into repetitive movements, like flapping their hands.

How The Development Of Autism Works

If it is not possible for a teenager or an adult to develop autism, how does autism actually develop? A 2014 report in the New England Journal of Medicine suggests that brain changes that take place long before birth might be what causes the symptoms of autism spectrum disorder.
