What Is The Assessment Process Like
The autism diagnostic assessment involves a number of key steps. The order that these steps take place depends on the team that are performing the assessment. One of the things that will have is an in-depth parent interview. The psychologist or psychiatrist will be following a gold-standard interview like the ADIR or the DISCO for example. The interview will cover questions on your childs development, what age they spoke, what their eye contact is like, how they are socialising and if they have any sensory difficulties. You will be asked about your childs strengths but unfortunately the majority of the focus during the interview will be on your childs difficulties or challenges. Sometimes it can be quite an upsetting process but a good psychologist will support you throughout.
During the assessment process the team might also perform a cognitive or developmental assessment. This process does not always happen but it is useful to see where your child is at cognitively or developmentally apart from autism. In these assessments they could pick up whether your child has an intellectual disability as well as being autistic or whether they have any developmental delays. You might be in the room with your child for this part of the assessment, depending on their age. Much of the autism assessment process involves ruling out other possible conditions also.
What To Look For When Buying Toys For Children With Autism
Sensory When choosing a toy for your child, always ensures that it has the ability to fulfil your childs craving for a sensory feedback.
Sensory toys will help your child focus and relax as well as develop social learning skills like planning, negotiating and sharing. For an autistic child, deformed sensory input can make their life hard in so many ways.
From social interaction to proprioception to even safety, distorted perception along with their inability to communicate can lead to irritability. Intervention using sensory toys will help them make better sense of their environment and make it easier for them to communicate.
Volume Control Toys with sounds and volume control will aid your child with auditory processing. Toys such as sound puzzles, bells, whistles, talking toys, radio and music boxes are great for children with autism.
Some children with autism are hypersensitive to sounds in general and may highly dislike toys with unpredictable noise or sounds at certain frequencies. This is why it is always a good idea to have toys with volume control to avoid any tantrums or discomfort.
Allowing your child to increase and decrease the volume of their toy using the button will definitely be considered sensory fulfilment to them too.

In 2013, the American Psychiatric Association released the fifth edition of its Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders .

Our service was set up by Scottish Autism with support from the Scottish Executive Health Department. We aim to contribute to the quality of life of people with ASD and their families and carers by providing accurate diagnosis and assessment.
A distinctive feature of the service is that is covers both children and adults. Many people find that there is no diagnostic service available to them because they fall into the wrong age range for local services. Others find that a criterion for eligibility is whether or not they have a learning disability, and often those who come to us have fallen through the net after having been referred previously to a variety of services without receiving a specialist assessment. Talking With Older Children And Teenagers About An Autism Diagnosis
If your child is in the process of being diagnosed, or has a new autism diagnosis, you might worry about what and how much to tell your child.
Your child will probably have questions about whats going on. These questions can guide what you say just answer them as honestly as you can, at a level your child will understand.
Older autistic children and teenagers often realise theyre different in some ways from other children their age, so dont be afraid to talk with your child about this. You can focus on your childs strengths for example, that your child has an excellent memory, is good with numbers or is very kind to animals. Its also OK to talk about the things that your child finds challenging, like making friends.
Older children and teenagers will react differently to being diagnosed.
Some might feel relieved to have a diagnosis. They can use the diagnosis as a way to understand parts of themselves and to help with the things they find difficult.
But others might need time to come to terms with the diagnosis or find it difficult to adjust. They might even feel scared. Children who were diagnosed when they were younger have grown up with their diagnoses as part of who they are. But older children can feel confused about who they are now. For example, they might feel conflicted about their newly identified additional needs.
What Are The Symptoms Of Autism
The early signs and symptoms of autism vary widely. Some children with ASD only have mild symptoms, and others have severe behavioral issues.
Toddlers usually like to interact with people and the environment they live in. Parents are typically the first to notice that their child is showing atypical behavior.
Every child on the autism spectrum experiences challenges in the following areas:
Early symptoms of ASD can include the following:
- developing language skills late
- not pointing at objects or people or wave goodbye
- not tracking people with their eyes
- showing a lack of responsiveness when their name is called
- not imitating facial expressions
Some individuals arent diagnosed until adulthood.
At present, theres no one official test for diagnosing autism. A parent or doctor may notice early indications of ASD in a young child, though a diagnosis would need to be confirmed.
If symptoms confirm it, a team of specialists and experts will usually make an official diagnosis of ASD. This could include a psychologist or neuropsychologist, a developmental pediatrician, a neurologist, and/or a psychiatrist.

Youre showing your support for your child and offering help when it comes to overcoming challenges. Your child will remember your efforts, and youll see greater progress overall.

Do I Need An Autism Diagnosis
Some adults may question whether they need a diagnosis later in life. Some people self-identify as autistic without receiving an official diagnosis. Its a personal decision. What can be helpful in receiving the label is access to supports and services that may not be available without a diagnosis, i.e. an income support program that provides additional income if mental health issues prevent being able to work full time. Maybe you need a job coach, a support person to look in on you a couple of times a week, specialized mental health services, or supports in the workplace. A diagnosis can also provide peace of mind and validation that indeed, you do have ASD.
Self-diagnosis in the adult autism community is widely accepted. You can join a support group or get together with other ASD adults without a formal diagnosis. Pursuing a diagnosis can be expensive as most health plans wont cover the cost and it can be difficult to find a professional who is adept at providing an adult diagnosis.
What Are The Causes Of Autism
Its natural to want to know what causes autism, however it is likely that there is not one single cause. While genetic differences are known to cause some types of autism, the causes of autism are largely unknown.
We do know that autism is a neurobiological difference, meaning that the brain processes information differently for people with autism, than it does for people who do not have autism.
We also know that parenting styles do not cause a child to develop autism.
Autism is not caused by vaccinations during or before pregnancy, and the falsely-reported link between the measles-mumps-rubella immunisation and autism has been retracted from the paper it was published in, and completely discredited by the research, scientific and medical community.

Challenges Of Secondary Settings
Educators and other key stakeholders in the students life must understand how characteristics of HFA may be manifested in inclusive classroom settings, in order to design and implement instruction to maximize student success.
An additional consideration is the reduced special education support available to students with HFA because of the need to take classes associated with graduation requirements and preparing for high-stakes testing. In most cases, secondary settings do not have enough special education teachers available to support students in all classes . Knowledge of the evidence-based practices recommended for students with HFA can help Individualized Education Program teams make informed decisions about instruction, behavior management and support needed for students with HFA.8

Why Is Autism Overlooked In These Early Screenings
There are a number of reasons why these initial autism evaluations dont result in an autism diagnosis, explains Dr. Nash. To avoid delays, parents should be aware of them.
- Both clinicians and parents gravitate toward the diagnosis with the best prognosis. Understandably, clinicians want a certain level of certainty before delivering a lifelong diagnosis of potential impairments, she says. So the initial approach is often to treat whats treatable and then reassess. For example, Lets treat this as ADHD first and see how much of the poor eye contact is related to inattention.
- Pediatricians want to give development a chance. It makes sense with children, since they do develop at different rates, says Dr. Nash. But doctors have a tendency to want to reassure parents, whose observations and worries are often discounted.
- Autism cant be diagnosed in a quick office visit. One reason pediatricians may not pick up autism, Dr. Nash observes, is because the evaluation takes too long. The standard assessment tool, called the ADOSthe Autism Diagnostic Observation Scheduletakes 30 minutes. And its meant to be paired with a structured interview with parents about current and past symptoms, and that takes several hours.

Executive functioning skills include time management, organization, self-starting, and problem-solving. According to Dr. Lee, students with ASD who focus on developing these skills during high school can set themselves up for success in college.
You need strong executive functioning skills in all aspects of college academic life, says Dr. Lee. Practice managing your own schedule. Initiate your work and monitor your progress.

Provide Support At Home
You can best serve your child by learning about ASD and by providing a supportive and loving home. Flexibility, creativity, and a willingness to keep learning will help you as you raise your child. Here are some things to know about this condition and some ways you can help your child.
- Your child has strengths. Like any other child, your child has strengths and weaknesses. Help build those strengths by encouraging your child to explore interests at home and in school.
- Routines are helpful. Children with ASD benefit from daily routines for meals, homework, and bedtime. They also like specific rules. Consistent expectations mean less stress and confusion for them.
- Change can be stressful. Change or new situations may be stressful for a child with ASD. Try to identify stress triggers. Avoid them if you can. Prepare your child in advance for hard situations, and teach your child ways to cope.
- Certain teaching styles may work best. Many people with ASD do best with verbal teaching and assignments. Visual supports, such as schedules and other ways to be organized, can be helpful. People with ASD may benefit from a parts-to-whole teaching approach. They often have trouble understanding the big picture. It may help to start with part of a concept. Then add to it to show larger ideas.
What To Expect During Your Child’s Autism Evaluation
Your child will be evaluated by either a developmental pediatrician, a psychologist or with a team of professionals. Evaluations can range from one-and-a-half hours to four hours or longer, and may be done in one day or over a few visits. This depends on the type of evaluation and the number of providers your child will be seeing.

How We Secure Your Information
Autism Diagnosis And Mental Health
Fleming is not alone in his experience. Recently, researchers at Edge Hill University in the United Kingdom found that a significant proportion of autistic adults were not diagnosed until later in lifea group referred to as the “lost generation.” For many, the later diagnosis has led to worse quality of life and poor mental health outcomes.
The mixed-method study, which was published in the Journal of Autism and Developmental Disorders, surveyed 420 autistic and typically developing adults about their quality of life and autistic trait levels. The researchers also conducted interviews with eight autistic people who were diagnosed in adulthood.
Liam Cross, PhD, a co-author of the study, says that the research showed that neurotypical people tend to have a higher quality of life outcomes as they age, which is largely attributable to reduced anxiety and more social support. But that’s not the case for autistic adults.
The study interviews revealed that autistic adults did not receive a diagnosis in their childhood for a myriad of reasons. In some cases, their parents were hesitant to pursue a diagnosis because they held negative perceptions of autism.

Why Have I Been Offered An Assessment For Autism
You might be offered an assessment if you or people in your life think that you may have someof the signs of autism. These signs may include:
- finding it difficult talking to and being with other people
- having unusual or intense interests
- finding some situations and experiences difficult to cope with
- sometimes finding noise, touch, taste and texture, lights or smells difficult to deal with
- strongly preferring your usual routine
- developing more easily in some areas than others.
Having an assessment means you can talk about these things and find out possible reasons for them.
You may want to discuss what you find difficult more informally with someone before having an assessment, to help you decide if now is the right time for you.
You may also find it helpful to talk about this with your school, doctor or social worker, if you have one.
Health Professionals Your Child May See During The Assessment Process
- Paediatrician â a medical doctor with special training and skills in children and their diseases. A developmental paediatrician specialises in child development and behaviour.
- Child and adolescent psychiatrist â a medical doctor with special training in treating children and teenagers with mental illness.
- Psychologists â an allied health professional trained to assess and treat mental health and behavioural problems.
- Speech pathologist â an allied health professional who assesses and treats speech, language and communication disorders.
- Occupational therapist â an allied health professional trained to assess and support people with physical, sensory, or cognitive problems and help them regain their independence.
- Social worker â An allied health professional trained to assist people and families manage difficulties. This could be through a combination of counselling and practical support.
