Not everyone with autism displays the same behaviors. There are many signs of autism and they may be experienced by varying degrees; severe autism is considered a disability.
Diagnosis of autism depends upon the patient showing symptoms of social interaction impairment, communication impairment, and a restricted, repetitive pattern of behavior.
Communication symptoms can include a lack of responsiveness or unusual gestures. It has been reported that at least one-third of autistic individuals do not develop speech and communication enough to meet the needs of daily life.
Restrictive behavior can include purposeless movement such as rocking, head rolling, hand flapping, and other movements. It can also include compulsive behavior such as rearranging objects and needing to control the physical environment. Ritual behavior is also a common symptom of autism, such as needing to do things the same way and at the same time every day and resisting change in the environment. Limited activity, focus, and interest is also a symptom of autism, as well as self-injury, such as biting oneself, pulling hair, and other self-injury activities. None of these symptoms are specific to autism, but these behaviors are often present, severe, and reoccurring.

Can I Get Financial Help If My Child Has Autism
Disability Living Allowance DLA is a non-diagnosis specific benefit, so having a diagnosis of autism will not automatically lead to an award, but many children on the autism spectrum do qualify for the benefit. It is also entirely non-means-tested, so your income and savings are not taken into account.
If You Get Ssi And Are Turning 18
If you get SSI and then you turn 18, the biggest change in SSI eligibility rules is that you are considered an adult, not a child. When SSI decides whether you have a disability, SSI will not use their definition of disability for children. Instead, as an adult, SSI looks at your ability to work, not just your physical or mental limitations. That means that some people stop getting SSI benefits after they turn 18.
During the first year after you turn 18, SSI will automatically check to see if they still consider you disabled. This is called the SSI Age-18 Redetermination. They will say you have a disability if:
- You have a physical or mental impairment or combination of impairments
- Your impairments limit your ability to work, and
- Your condition has lasted or is expected to last for at least 12 months.
SSI may also look at your work and school record to see if you are able to work and may even talk to your teachers, counselors, or employers.
If you are going through the SSI Age-18 redetermination, Social Security may consider you to have a disability, even if you are working and earn less than $1,310 per month.
If you were not getting SSI before you turned 18 and you apply for SSI as an adult, Social Security may consider you to have a disability if you are working, but only if you make less than $1,310 per month, if you aren’t blind. If you are blind, you could earn much more.

To provide you and/or your child or youth with Ontario Autism Program services and supports, it is necessary for the Ministry of Children, Community and Social Services to collect your and your child or youths personal information and your child or youths personal health information. This information may be provided by you or obtained from your Ontario Autism Program service provider. The personal information that will be collected by the ministry includes, but is not limited to, your and/or;your;child or youths;name, phone number,;address and your child or youths birth date.
The ministry will use the personal information you have provided to the Ministry and the personal health information provided to the ministry by your Ontario Autism Program service provider to determine the amount of Ontario Autism Program interim one-time funding you will receive, to issue such funding, and to address any funding-related issues, including those that may arise as a result of reconciling the funding. The ministry will use your child or youths personal information to verify and confirm your child or youths personal health information on file and to maintain your child or youths original registration date and position on the Ontario Autism Program waitlist for entry into the new needs-based program.
