Early Warning Signs: First Year
Even young infants are very social, so its possible to detect signs of autism in how babies interact with their world. At this age, a child with an ASD may:

- Not respond to his own name
- Not look people in the eye

Yes! Maintaining social relationships while keeping physical distance is both incredibly important yet difficult. But by working on telephone skills with your child, you can both help her maintain important social and conversational skills and also help deepen her relationship with her grandparents and other family members. Since we dont know your child, we cant give specific advice, but well share examples of skills that could be taught and a variety of teaching strategies you could use. How To Teach The Child Yes / No Training
Yes or no training is a very helpful part of language, but developmentally disabled children may have problems with such language and may need explicit instructions. Yes/ no training can be divided in to two procedures training, they are:
Generally being with personal feelings because they seems easier to teach.
Select two behaviours, one that your child definitely prefers & one that he definitely doesnt prefer. For example: you may ask a question such as do you want candy? as contrasted to the question, do you want a spanking? Ask one of these questions & then prompt the correct response.
For example : Do you want some candy? while holding a prize of candy clearly in front of the child then prompt the child to verbalize yes before you actually give the child the candy. You then say, Do you want some candy? Yes the prompt is then gradually faded and you end up with a situation in which the child is verbalizing yes to your question. Do you want some candy? once this is established you then raise your arm and ask the child the question Do you want a spanking? and prompt the answer no. in gradual steps this prompt is faded.

Asking Yes And No Questions
Answering yes and no questions is an important speech therapy task, but dont forget about asking yes and no questions!
Asking a yes or no question is actually really easy. Watch, Ill do it with one word:

Use Visual Strategies To Cue
Sometimes answering questions is difficult because students have difficulty accessing the vocabulary they need to answer the question. ;They may be able to visualize the answer but not convey it in words. ;Answering questions requires more steps than we typically realize, one of which is to generate the language that is not often included in the question. ;To address this, use visual cues to get the student started. Or if he is having difficulty with word retrieval, try adding pictures to make the task easier. Even understanding that a yes or no is required can sometimes be difficult. ;Think about giving choices with pictures and teaching him to refer to the picture to answer the question. ;So instead of yes, he might reply Yes, I want a cookie.;Having a picture of the cookie or the spinach can make it easier to generate this type of statement.
If you are having the student answer academic questions, like what a character did in a story or talk about feelings by giving them a graphic organizer and a word bank. Something as simple as a bank of vocabulary words or pictures he/she can use to answer the questions may relieve enough stress for him to be successful. ;Over time you can fade the visual supports out, but when initially teaching the skill, they make a useful tool.

Yes No Questions Step Two: Do You Want It
Start with the above activity.; When your child is consistently answering yes, try offering something that you know she would answer no to.; For example, if youre playing with bubbles and your child is consistently answering yes, now switch it up and offer something uninteresting, like a small scrap of paper: Do you want paper?; Model no just like as described above with yes.; Say No, no paper and switch back to the one you know she likes: Do you want bubbles?
The next step: Once youve practiced helping her say no, try to get her to answer without your help.; If she still says yes, say yes, yes paper and hand her the uninteresting object.; She will probably be confused because that wasnt really what she wanted.; When she discards it or hands it back to you, say oh!; No, no paper and switch back to offering the preferred object.

I remember with the boy, Ill call him Adam. He did another program called Fast Forward, which really helped him. I remember being in an IEP meeting when he was in first grade and they wanted to stop Language for Learning or Language for Thinking, Im not sure where he was at that moment. He was trying different computer programs and was having problems.;
The school thought he was fine. They just wanted to include him and stop Language for Learning. They said Language for Learning didnt seem very functional. I had Adam since he was two, he had gone from non-vocal to vocal with me. Now hes sort of conversational, and Language for Learning was the most important part of his day. I told the school, listen, he can either go be a kid that ends up in college or he can be a kid that ends up in life skills and needs support for the rest of his life. Thats how strongly I felt at that point.;

Ive had a lot of success with Lauren, whos in a lot of my intermediate learner course videos and the book program videos. I also had another little boy who was almost exactly her age and grade who is at a little bit of a different functioning level. I dont have video permission or permission to even discuss his case, so I wont.;
I had the one child from the age of two on. I had Lauren from four or five on. They were both struggling in first grade to get through Language for Learning. They were also both in Language for Thinking. The boy actually ended up going much quicker and got into Language for Writing and Reasoning before I transferred. They ended up being my last two clients.;
With a seven year old, were talking about inclusion if hes in school. Were also talking about reading and math. But the reading and math really should be based on the language. If you dont fix the language now, that is going to have major implications.;
