Introduction To Asperger Syndrome

In 1944, Hans Asperger in Vienna had published an account of children with many similarities to Kanner autism but who had abilities, including grammatical language, in the average or superior range. There are continuing arguments concerning the exact relationship between Asperger and Kanner syndromes but it is beyond dispute that they have in common the triad of impairments of social interaction, communication and imagination and a narrow, repetitive pattern of activities .

1993

• Stephan Ehlers and Christopher Gillberg published the results of a further study carried out in Gothenburg. This study examined children in mainstream schools. The aim was to find the prevalence of Asperger syndrome and other autism profiles in children with IQ of 70 or above.
• From the numbers of children they identified, they calculated a rate of 36 per 10,000 for those who definitely had Asperger syndrome and another 35 per 10,000 for those with social difficulties. Some of these children may have fitted Asperger description if more information had been available, but they were certainly on the autism spectrum. Teachers of these children had previously recognised social and/or educational differences, but had not been able to find a reason for these differences.

What Is The National Autism Spectrum Disorder Surveillance System

NASS is a collaboration of federal, provincial and territorial governments, working to build a comprehensive picture of ASD in Canada. NASS will contribute evidence to help inform critical planning of programs, services and research that impact Canadians living with ASD, their families and caregivers.

Led and coordinated by PHAC, NASS tracks the occurrence and demographic characteristics of children and youth with ASD, including estimates of prevalence, incidence and key characteristics, patterns and trends both over time and across geographic regions. NASS collects, analyzes and reports ASD data from multiple sectors such as health, education and social services.

The key objectives of NASS are to:

• Estimate how many children and youth in Canada have ASD and how many new cases are emerging over time
• Describe the population of children and youth in Canada with ASD and compare patterns within Canada and internationally
• Increase public awareness and understanding and,
• Inform research, policy and program decision-making.

What The Ons Published

The ONS published several different pieces of data together in the Outcomes for disabled people in the UK: 2020. This included several different national surveys that the ONS has run. For the first time, some of these surveys asked respondents if they are autistic. The results that were published included lots of different topics, including education, employment, housing and loneliness. Not all of these had findings that focused specifically on autism. But there were also some really important takeaways about the issues autistic people face:

Nass Participating Provinces And Territory

Collection of PT data was initiated in 2015. As of 2017, seven PTs have contributed 2015 data to NASS, they are: Prince Edward Island, New Brunswick, Newfoundland and Labrador, Nova Scotia, Quebec, British Columbia and the Yukon. Retrospective data have also been collected from Newfoundland and Labrador , Prince Edward Island , and Quebec which support analysis of trends over time within these regions. As full implementation is a phased process the remaining PTs will be brought into NASS as their data are assessed, and feasibility and validation projects are completed.

The population coverage varies amongst participating PTs. Nova Scotias data for 2015, included 40 percent of the population under surveillance as two of the largest school boards did not participate. In New Brunswick, 68 percent of the population 617 year olds is represented in NASS since presently only those who attend the Anglophone schools are included. The remaining PTs have representation of between 91 and 100 percent of the total school-aged population reflected in their 2015 NASS reporting.

Corresponding data for all participating PTs are given in Table 3: Provincial and territorial comparisons by prevalence, population representativeness, data sectors and data sources.

A Violent Turning Point

One night, after several weeks in which hed not said much of anything to me, I asked him to come to bed with me. He agreed. Giddy for a little attention, I showered, lit a few candles and changed into a pretty nightgown. An hour went by, then more than an hour, and there he sat glued to his screen. I was so desperate for love that I became manic. I hurled insults at him. He jumped up, his agitation grew violent as he grabbed his lounge chair and hurled it across the room at me. I ran out, and the wooden chair leg pierced a deep gouge into the door, slamming it shut.

I grew despondent. He retreated further into his interest.And a new cycle of verbal violence emerged.

Delays In Waiting Times From Referral To Diagnostic Assessment

It is estimated that there are around 700,000 people in the UK, including one in 100 children, with a diagnosis of autism spectrum disorder.

In recent years the policy response has started to reflect the scale of these issues and has led to a greater awareness and focus on autism spectrum disorder, including each UK nation setting out their own strategy.

Different Degrees Of Independence

First, its important to understand that a diagnosis of autism spectrum disorder does not mean that your child or family member will not be able to date, make friends, attend college, get married, become a parent, or have a satisfying career. People with ASD do these things and more every day.

What an ASD diagnosis does mean is that your child or family member will progress differently than people without ASD.

Romance And Autism: Dating Is More Than Possible For People With Asd

There is a common misconception that people with an ASD are not interested in relationships or romance. This simply isnt true. While this population struggles with social skills and communication, this doesnt equate with disinterest, even though the stress and sense of self-defeat may dissuade an autistic person from attempting romance. In a study done by Torontos Redpath Centre , just 32.1 percent of people with autism had had a partner and only 9 percent were married. This contrasts with the statistics of the general population where about 50 percent of adults are married.

Romantic relationships are not addressed in transitional support plans from childhood to adulthood. Just because a person has autism doesnt mean there is no desire for affection and intimacy. % Of Adults With Autism Are Unemployed Who Is To Blame

Nearly 66 percent of adults with autism are unemployed. A vast majority of autistic individuals cannot get a job and when they do, bullying in the professional space seems to be on the rise. An estimated 500,000 young adults with autism are due to enter the US workforce in the next decade, and a majority will struggle to land their first job.

Research scientist Anne Roux, of the A.J. Drexel Autism Institute in Philadelphia, studies young adults with autism and was the lead author of National Autism Indicators Report: Transition Into Young Adulthood report. Young adults on the spectrum are just as eager to live independently and work. However, social services aimed at helping children overcome problems with communication and social skills become less available as those students get older.

Number Of People With Adhd

Globally, its estimated that around 63 million had ADHD in 2016. 70 percent of ADHD cases were in males versus females .

The Institute of Health Metrics and the WHO International Classification of Diseases define a broad category of idiopathic developmental intellectual disability. This category is broad and incorporates a number id disorders which are defined by delayed or impaired speech, language, motor condition, and visuo-spatial skills.

The ICD categorise this group of disorders as having the following common traits: an onset that is invariably during infancy or childhood an impairment or delay in the development of functions that are strongly related to biological maturation of the central nervous system and a steady course that does not involve the remissions and relapses that tend to be characteristic of many mental disorders.

In most cases, the functions affected include language, visuo-spatial skills and/or motor coordination. It is characteristic for the impairments to lessen progressively as children grow older .

What Are The Symptoms Of Nonspeaking Autism

The primary symptom of nonspeaking autism is being unable to speak clearly or without interference.

Autistic people may have difficulty talking to or carrying on a conversation with another person, but those who are nonspeaking do not speak at all.

There are several reasons for this. It may be because they have , a disorder that affects certain brain pathways. It can interfere with a persons ability to say what they want correctly.

It may also be because they have not developed verbal communication skills. Some children may lose verbal skills as symptoms of the condition worsen and become more noticeable.

Some autistic kids may also have echolalia, which causes them to repeat words or phrases over and over. It can make communication difficult.

Symptoms of autism often improve with age. As children grow older, symptoms may become less severe and disruptive. Your child may also become verbal with intervention and therapy.

Researchers do not yet know what causes autism. However, they do have a better understanding of some factors that may play a role.

Vaccines do not cause autism.

In 1998, a controversial study proposed a link between autism and the measles, mumps, and rubella vaccine. However, additional research debunked that report. In fact, the researchers behind the 1998 study retracted it in 2010.

Let Those In Your Family With Autism Know They Are Loved

If you have a family member who is on the spectrum, it is therefore critical that you let them know by all that you do and say how much you love and value them. Individuals with autism are worthy of love and acceptance every bit as much as anyone else, but they might not always feel the easy sense of human connection that is present for many of us with no great effort on our parts.

Try to be a guiding force in the life of your family member or friend who has autism. You dont want to give them the sense that you are running their life for them. They should be allowed to be independent, but at the same time, you should be there for them as much as they need.

It is helpful if you know that they have a network of close, reliable friends. If they play in organized sports leagues, belong to clubs, or they are in a relationship, it is probably going to do them a lot of good. If they have a job or a career that they feel is rewarding, that can help as well. It is when people with autism feel disconnected from society that they might resort to suicidal thoughts or ideations.

Autism Can Make Romance Trickybut Not Impossible

Aspergers syndrome no longer exists as a discrete diagnosis. Today, people with the symptoms of Aspergers receive an autism spectrum diagnosis . The names Level 1 autism spectrum disorder or high-functioning autism are often used instead of Aspergers.

It can be difficult to manage marriage to a person who has a hard time with social skills, interpersonal communication, empathetic understanding, or flexibility of thought.

Sexuality On The Autism Spectrum

Autistic adults have, in general, differences in sexuality from the norm. Many more are asexual than in the average population. It is believed that there is a slightly higher pecentage of gays, lesbians, bisexual, and transgendered autistics than in the average population.

Bisexual or homosexual Aspies may find more potential for sex and/or relationships in the gay community where there is less emphasis on conformity. Girls and women who are autistic can have more chance at success in relationships, generally speaking, than men. This is due to differences in social requirements, where a man is often expected to ask a girl for a date, rather than vice versa.

Living in a society where long-time relationships and starting a family are the norm it can be very hard for socially inexperienced men with Aspergers to find a partner and some stay away from dating for that reason.

Some of those on the autism spectrum are celibate by choice, feeling that they are asexual, or that there are more important things in life. Others have resigned themselves to celibacy due to the fact that romantic or sexual relationships can be much harder to find due to a misunderstanding of social skills and the difficulty of finding a suitable partner.

The Outlook For Autism In 2021

While autistic individuals face difficulties that make various aspects of life more challenging, greater knowledge about the disorder has paved the way to better therapies. Autism research has allowed for more effective diagnostic processes as well as enhanced treatments and a better understanding of necessary accommodations for those with the disorder.

Effective interventions, therapies, and health care services greatly improve quality of life for those autism. Thanks to these advancements in our approach to autism treatment, there are more opportunities for autistic individuals than ever before.
