Early Warning Signs: First Year

Honoring World Autism Awareness Day

Even young infants are very social, that its possible to detect signs of autism in how babies interact with their world. At this age, a child with an ASD may:

  • Not turn to a mothers voice
  • Not respond to his name
  • Not look people in the eye
  • Have no babbling or pointing by one year
  • Not smile or respond to social cues from others
  • Babies who do not have autism can have these behaviours, too, but its best to contact your doctor right away with any concerns.

At 12 months

  • A child with typical development will turn his head when he hears his name.
  • A child with ASD might not turn to look, even after his name is repeated several times, but will respond to other sounds.

At 18 months

  • A child with delayed speech skills will point, gesture, or use facial expressions to make up for her lack of talking.
  • A child with ASD might not attempt to compensate for delayed speech or might limit speech to parroting what is heard on TV or what she just heard.

At 24 months

  • A child with typical development brings a picture to show his mother and shares his joy from it with her.
  • A child with ASD might bring her a bottle of bubbles to open, but he does not look at his moms face when she does or share in the pleasure of playing together.

ASD at any age might also include the following signs:

  • Repeated motions
  • Avoiding eye contact or physical touch
  • Delays in learning to talk
  • Repeating words or phrases
  • Getting upset by minor changes

Misconception: Vaccines Cause Autism

Its been a tumultuous few years for parents and pediatricians: measles, mumps, whooping cough and chicken pox have all resurfaced in North America after they were virtually wiped out with the help of vaccines.

Infectious disease experts suggest a steadily growing anti-vaccination movement is whats causing this resurgence.

In 1998, a study raised concerns about a possible link between the MMR measles, mumps, rubella vaccine and autism, setting off widespread panic around the world. The study had its flaws: it was based on only 12 children, and the researchers didnt find a link between the MMR vaccine and behavioural problems. Ten of the 13 authors of the paper said they shouldnt have published the paper.

Ultimately, the journal that published the paper issued a formal retraction. It said that its decision to publish the article was the result of a collective failure. Subsequent large studies around the world havent found a link between the MMR vaccine or any other vaccine and autism.

There is no scientific evidence to support the theory of a link. Because signs of autism may appear around the same age that children receive the MMR vaccine, some parents believe the vaccine causes the condition, the;Canadian Paediatric Society;says on its website.

The United Nations Has Declared April 2 As World Autism Awareness Day

The theme for 2020 is: The Transition into Adulthood

From the United Nations website:

Becoming an adult is typically equated with becoming a full and equal participant in the social, economic and political life of ones community. However, the transition to adulthood remains a;significant challenge;for persons with autism because of the lack of opportunities and support devoted to this phase of their life. As a result, the completion of high school, when education and other supported services provided by some governments tend to cease, has often been likened to falling off a cliff.

The 2020 United Nations observance of the Day draws attention to issues of concern related to the transition to adulthood, such as the importance of participation in youth culture and the community self-determination and decision-making, access to post-secondary education and employment, and independent living.

What Is World Autism Awareness Day

Set up in the distant past of December 2007, World Autism Awareness Day takes place on 2nd April every year and is one of only 4 official health days set up by the United Nations .

Although every year carries its own individual message , at its heart, World Autism Awareness Day is a community-wide event, which rather than raising awareness of what autism actually is, aims to highlight the achievements and possibilities which autistic people are capable of.

Within the space of only 10 years, there have been some incredible moments surrounding World Autism Awareness Day, with perhaps the most notable being the Light It Up Blue initiative.

Light It Up Blue is an annual event that started in 2010 and aims to raise awareness of autism by encouraging businesses, homes and iconic world landmarks to illuminate their sites in blue lighting on 2nd April. Since the very first Light It Up Blue event, the campaign has been popular, with the Empire State Building, The London Eye and The Christ the Redeemer statue, in Brazil, all taking part at various points.

Light It Up Blue has also become prominent on social media over the years, with many celebrities sharing images on the day of themselves wearing blue, in solidarity with the autism community and using the hashtag #LightItUpBlue. A few of the famous names which have taken part are:

  • Sia
  • Kelly Rowland
  • And, of course, The Blue Man Group

Celebrating World Autism Awareness Day And Autism Acceptance Month

April 2 is World Autism Awareness Day

Today the world recognizes and celebrates the rights of individuals with autism. World Autism Awareness Day, established in 2008 by the United Nations, is an international observance to make us mindful of this complex, lifelong developmental disability, which typically appears in early childhood. We also join organizations like the Autism Society of America and Autism Speaks to celebrate our differences throughout Aprils Autism Acceptance Month, a formal shift from Autism Awareness Month, announced in early March.

With autism identified as our countrys fastest-growing developmental disorder, affecting one in 54 children according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, theres increasing urgency for intervention and therapy to improve the lives of the over 5 million people diagnosed and living with this condition.

Misconception: Parenting Environmental Factors Trigger Autism

Autism was first described by scientists in the 1940s. Years later, critics pointed a finger at cold parenting refrigerator mothers who were distant and didnt engage with their kids as the culprit.

While researchers still dont know what causes autism, theyre certain parenting isnt a factor. Theyre zeroing in on genes instead.

Studies have suggested that parents who have a first child with autism have higher chances of having a second child with autism compared to the general population.

Canadian scientists who studied siblings with autism and their parents found that even siblings can have different forms of autism.

In this case, the siblings and their parents genetic code were examined. Mutations present like typos in the human DNA code. While siblings shared autism spectrum disorder and the same parents, the typos in their DNA that led to the neurodevelopmental condition werent the same.

The Transition To Adulthood

Autism isnt something we simply grow out of, so why is it that so little support exists for autistic people once we become old enough to buy beer? This is the question which will be discussed at W.H.O. HQ this year and, provided the head honchos over there manage to find some time to speak, given the current Coronavirus catastrophe, we are likely to hear about the following subjects:

  • Post-secondary education
  • Employment
  • Independent living

In an effort to contribute to this end goal, my World Autism Awareness Day pledge this year will be to create a guide/resource that will support ageing autists and, unlike last years promise , I additionally pledge not to wait until the very last minute to create it
